SCENIC HIKING
Experiencing a mĂŠlange of nature diversity in Tanzania
PUGU HILLS
Along with the adjoining Kazimzumbwi reserve, the Pugu Forest is one of the oldest forests in the world. The area is characterized close to endemic plant species, mammalians , and over 80 species of birds. Wildlife include elephants, Masai giraffes, impalas, common warthogs, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, pangolins, mongooses, civets, side-striped jackals and black-backed jackals. Pugu Hills Nature Centre is a tranquil place located on a hillside backing onto the Pugu Forest Reserve. Many hikers come along with a local guide and walk around the reserve from one hour to a full, strenuous day. Visit one of East Africa’s largest cattle markets and a dip into a beautiful nature pool at the centre. Stay in spacious, en suite bungalow, pitch your tent, along with shower facilities and a restaurant serving tasty vegetarian and other meals.
ULUGURU MOUNTAINS
Uluguru Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, extending from South East Kenya to the South East of Tanzania. The mountain ranges are recognized as a global biodiversity "hot spot", for high species richness, large number of endemic plant and animal species, and the delicate nature from human caused disturbances.
12
There are 15 species of birds, 11 endemic reptiles and amphibians and five threatened mammals. Much of the mountains are covered with forest reserves that contain some of the oldest species trees. Hike through various villages that come along the way, walk through the forest edge, meet locals that specialized in wooden handicraft and enjoy cooking and eating a delicious meal. Various routes allow you to pass through local communities, Hululu waterfalls, traditional witchcraft doctors, farming lands and bright views of the lit Morogoro town at night while camping on the hill.
UDZUNGWA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
With a a total area of 2,000km² this national park has the greatest altitudinal range of forests in East Africa and has one of the highest numbers of species endemism worldwide. Udzungwa National Park is located 65 km south of Mikumi National Park. With no roads entering Udzungwa National Park it is a paradise for hikers and backpackers alike. Numerous breathtaking day-hikes can be organized along with multiple day excursions into the dense rain forest or onto the high plateau. One beautiful trek is up to the Sanje River Waterfall, which plunges for 170 metres through the forest to the valley below. The view from the top is magnificent! Udzungwa National Park supports a diverse, large mammal community including elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, african wild dog, eland, waterbuck and sable. There is also a rich small bovid community including good numbers of Red, Blue and Abbots duikers and bushbuck.

more than you can imagine... "Dotted between the palm trees of Zanzibar's South East Coast, along an unfurling swathe of postcard-perfect coastline, sits one of the best lodges – Hakuna Majiwe. It's the Place of No Stones, a site so idyllic that we named our hotel after it. 'Hakuna Majiwe', means 'place without stones'. As individual as its name, this Paje beach hotel has a special atmosphere, being different to other hotels. Set on a fabulous 6 kilometres white-sand palm-fringed and desert beach, cooled by the ocean breeze, it is the perfect gateway to an exotic African paradise."

BIZARRE WILDLIFE DESTINATIONS
Katavi Tanzania’s third-largest national park, Katavi is situated is situated in the
remote southwest corner of the country and is known as Africa’s most wild area with unadulterated bush settings, and rich wildlife. Katavi is home to greatest concentration of hippos and crocodiles in Tanzania and additionally has buffaloes, elephant, antelopes, leopard, lion, zebra and over 400 species of water birds. It’s forest tapestry is unique comprising large areas of acacia and miombo woodland, expansive lakes home to all manner of wildlife, and extensive floodplains irrigated by a network of seasonal rivers and waterways.
22
The surrounding reserves of Lukwati, Luafi and Rukwa, form one of the most impressive ecosystems in Africa. Only a thin percentage of travelers visit Katavi with its dense and remote location becoming a challenging factor for comfort and a smooth experience.
Mahale Mahale Mountains National Park, nestled on the Lake Tanganyikan shoreline in western Tanzania, is known as Tanzania’s first chimpanzee sanctuary.
About 1700 chimpanzees live within its 1613sqkm area, but the focal point for visitors is the 60-strong Mimikere, or 'M' group, which has been the subject of research for more than four decades. Long trousers, sturdy boots, a hat and a surgical mask are quintessential the steep climbing through often-dense vegetation. The experience itself is captivating: almost without warning, a chimp brushes past you on the trail, several individuals become visible in a clearing just ahead or high above in the tree tops. In between chimp tracking expeditions, Lake Tanganyika beckons for snorkelling, kayaking and hippo- and crocodile-spotting forays.
Gombe
Gombe is the smallest of all the Tanzania’s national parks: a fragile strip of chimpanzee habitat straddling the steep slopes and river valleys that hem in the sandy northern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Its chimpanzees – habituated to human visitors – were made famous by the pioneering work of Jane Goodall, whom in 1960 founded a behavioural research program that now stands as the longest-running study of its kind in the world. Guided walks are available that take visitors deep into the forest to observe and sit with the extraordinary primates for an entire morning — an incredible experience and one that is the highlight of many visitors’ trips to Africa.
