Alf Manciagli Grand Winner

What was your photographic journey? I was born in Nicolosi, Italy. At the age of 14, I followed my father to Australia. After spending a couple of years in Sydney I returned to Italy to join the Airforce. After passing all my exams I decided that it was too regimented for me so I signed myself out. Photography had always been a hobby that I enjoyed. I decided to enroll at the New York Institute of Photography as a resident student. It was there that I got my foundation in photography and after meeting Eugene Smith, the famous photo journalist, the decision was simple.

So you are by nature a commercial photographer, how did you start your journey? I started my career as a freelance news photographer and after 7 years working in the Middle East, South East Asia and South Africa. I began to see a lack of interest by news papers and magazines in printing the stories and events that affected those countries. After returning to Sydney and managing a studio, myself and a photographer friend from England decided to open our own studio, so my life as a commercial photographer began.

Can you tell us more about the award winning photo that has helped you to win the Live, Love and Laughter competition? One thing that defined this photo is the innocence for me, the poverty and the happiness of being friends. Unlike the generation before them I believe that they will have a better future in north Vietnam.

Why commercial, and not protraits or weddings etc? I find commercial photography to be more challenging. You work with different advertising agencies and a lot of creative people and produce a great variety of work. Does commercial photography restrict your creativity? I don’t find that commercial photography restricts the creative process as every job is different and requires different solutions which challenge your creativity as well as your technical knowledge. The client require images that represent what they make or sell in the best way possible. If during the shoot I think that I can make a better image without compromising the client’s vision, I will. I never feel controlled. Even when the creative director is present - it’s all about collaboration. How do you ensure that you understand exactly what the clients want and deliver what was expected?

What do you think are some important qualities that a good commercial photographer must have? To listen to the clients needs no matter how absurd it may seem. To know your equipment inside out. Study the scene carefully. Where lighting is required use it creatively. Minimise interference where people must do their job. You can’t be afraid of heights or being deep inderground and keep up with trends. Are there any memorable projects that you have worked on throughout the years? Working at great height from suspended scaffolding on a new power station and a commission in Nabmibia to photograph the bushman for a photographic library.

If there is one love of photography, what would it be be and why? To be able to capture or create something very special and put your stamp on it. Your love for black and white photography is apparent. Can you tell us a bit more about this?

look for when you do photography. Is there a theme, a series, a project etc? Before I decide to travel I try to learn as much possible about the customs and religion, the likes and dislikes of the people and of course a few words to break the ice. I always like to get to the more remote areas where tourists are very few. I usually have a theme or project in mind. It maybe landscapes, children, old people or people at work.

As a former news photographer, black and white has always conveyed to me more drama and character - especially to people. Portraits can be taken in natural or artificially controlled light. Whenever you travel, what do you

I think of photography as one means to say to one opinion, the I am also interested sexpersonal feelings and sometimes relationship in which psychological complexity.
