Melting Point

In this project, we have to design an outreach centre for craftspeople to live, create, display and for visitors to witness the process, studio, workshop and most importantly, the crafts. Our site is a typical building, but we must concentrate and utilise its old characteristic to design an outstanding combination. Therefore, we cannot wait to get involved in this project with three craftspeople, who we could also discuss the design process and have interactions and thoughts in this Melting Point. I believe that it will be an exciting and fascinating project and process.

Journey

In

the fashionable Upper Street, we could see the majority of the contemporary shop facades suited with the Victorian buildings. Some of us are built with curved glass, rectangular glass with wooden frames, or even none of wooden frames. With the development of advanced technology, people and designers started to redesign facades, even their body with, future concepts. However, the designers did not reconstruct the entire body of them, like roofs, and some outside areas. We suppose that it is an outstanding masterpiece that they have done to us so far, because we could still appreciate the whole Upper Street with each other in all the Victorian buildings together, let visitors to experience the modern atmosphere during their shopping or just stopping by.

Furthermore,

the columns could witness from outside were built decades ago; to tell you the truth, some of us are even from centuries ago, but you just need a second to pass through the history and enter a modern interior. In other words, it is just like time-travel between 200 years. While you are touching clothes and eating food in the 21st century, you are sitting in a building built with bricks in centuries ago. Therefore, they are standing in Upper Street, seeing people crossing the road, entering shops and restaurants. Besides, I have noticed that they were enjoying passing centuries within just 1 step, which is the exciting moment that is happening in the street. Thus, Upper Street is an extraordinary road.

Back Elevation

The site located at an open space where we can see the whole right elevation not only the front. It is important to consider the whole section and part to let people to be attracted and curious. In the Upper Street, there are lots of designers reconstructed the shopfront to be modern, but we hope to maintain its own history and create a new story for itself. It is great to see a combination of two generations.

Holding & Occupying Showing in front of you one of a building in a city is a way to focus on this building. Even it is an old Victorian building in a modern society, but you will concentrate on every detail of this old one, not the rest. I could say, this old Victorian building occupies the entire city.

Occupying Spaces

Holding & Occupying

These cases all illustrate one significant element inside the building, a pure white staircase in an old structure, a ramp in an interior space and a circular ramp shows the circulation and dominates.

Occupying the space. Force visitors to abide by the path we set Witnessing the long journey within a circulation.

Having a circulation around the interior space is vital. It is quite exciting to put a long journey for visitors to travel and enjoy.

Conceptual ramps around the building. They connected the walls on both sides. Exploring every corner at the end of the ramp could make the building calm and clean but interesting elements happen on both end sides.

Design Concept

I think to have a circulation inside of the building is essential. By Putting an occupying ramp within the building could dominate the entire space. It is straightforward and compelling to occupy the space.

Each floor has the same circulation with the ramp. Not over complicated for visitors to visit or look for another direction. It is a clear route for them to experience craft studios and display.

To put a embedded new element in an old building is quite an exciting thing. This element I considered to place in the middle of the ramp that could attract visitors to enjoy some surprises while they walking. It could be a little personal exhibition of a series. Even could be a little interacting area for visitors to social and relax.

As the design development we have experienced, I decided to use this powerful, simple ramp into the building and let it does its job, everything. It is holding the old Victorian building and carry the new elements both sides at the same time. I think it is a great holding and occupying ramp to be embedded in this old body.

To have veneer in the workshop is great for craftspeople. They could smell every material they need and veneer to make a comparison. It also makes the workshops feel more human and provide them with a spiritual area. They are nature and have a close relationship with the old building.

Experiencing a different vision in an old Victorian building is exciting. This ramp plays a significant role in the entire interior space and it does everything for the celebration of crafts. This one thing, ramp, is just one, no separation, which means everyone all treated the same and there is no special big area for particular people. It is honest, not hiding anything but sharing. There is no confusing with a big open space.

Right Elevation New inserted element black steel window. It is interesting to design an old victorian building with a modern element. The new element could illustrate the gap between old and new generations. One new element to be inserted in the building while the strong atmosphere of red bricks is standing at their land could let visitors experience the memorable history and the smell of modern.

I think to have a second exit is important for all the people in the building. This staircase could let visitors to observe the working process of crafts. They can see how they playing and enjoying the art pieces from the outside area. In addition, they could just walk down by few steps and see another workshop. They could not only see the process of craft but also see other visitors passing by the ramp. I believe that it is an interesting way to witness the workshop, circulation of ramp and people.

Most of the visitors don’t have any experience of crafts, so I think to have a socialising area for craftspeople and visitors is vital. This unfolded glass shelf could let creators put their process model or artefact to the platform and to attract visitors to witness their works, even tell them the experience and development of the crafts.

In addition, some nations might sit down the benches and sketch the crafts or interior space, even spend a long time in a specific art. Therefore, having a long rest area in every ramp is important.

It is exciting that to witness some crafts in a dark atmosphere, especially in a glass with lighting. This ramp not only shows masterpiece in the daytime but also have an awesome atmosphere for the visitors who like to see in a dark circumstance. A long ramp glass lighting does everything.
