Kellogg PGY4 Sole Resident on ACGME Residency Program Review Committee
In addition to the unending ‘to do list’ of a resident, PGY4 Alejandra Maiz, M.D., is finding time to ensure the high quality of ophthalmic training across the U.S.
Dr. Maiz was selected to serve a two-year term on the Ophthalmology Residency Program Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The ACGME sets and monitors compliance with standards for graduate medical training, ensuring that learners are prepared to deliver highquality, patient-focused care.
Program Review Committees for each major medical specialty are tasked with setting residency education and training standards that reflect the best practices in their field. They also monitor programs for compliance, fielding surveys, conducting site visits, collecting and analyzing data, and providing actionable feedback.
The committee is comprised of representatives from the American Board of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association and the American Osteopathic Association, as well as one public member and one resident member. Dr. Maiz was nominated during her post-graduate year two (PGY2) of training by Kellogg Residency Program Director Bradford Tannen, M.D., J.D.
“I was honored to be selected,” says Dr. Maiz, “and it’s so gratifying that, as the sole voice for all residents, the committee listens and values my opinion.”
“It has proved to be one of the most rewarding aspects of my residency,” she continues. “The opportunity to interact with faculty from across the country has given me an invaluable perspective on the field. It’s also reinforced to me what exceptional residency training we receive at Kellogg.”
The experience has also shown Dr. Maiz how much work goes into managing a residency program. In spite of that, she wants to remain involved in residency education going forward. “Among my career goals,” she says, “I hope to be a residency program coordinator.”
