Thissectionhasthedescriptionandrepairproceduresforthesteeringaxle.Seethefollowingsectionsforadditionalinformationonthepartsofthesteeringsystem: SteeringHousingandControlUnit and Hydraulic System

Description

Thesteeringaxleassemblyincludesanaxleframe, steeringcylinder,andtwospindleandhubassemblies.SeeFigure1.Thesteeringaxleisconnected totheframewithcenterpivotmounts.Thecenter pivotmountsontheaxleframearefastenedtothe lifttruckframewithrubbermounts.Thesteering axlecanmakeanarticulatedmotionandgivesthe lifttruckasmoothertraveloverroughsurfaces.

Theendcapsofthesteeringcylinderarealsothe mountsforthecylinderandareheldtotheshellby themountcapscrews.O-rings,seals,andwipers intheendcapsareusedtokeeptheoilinsidethe

steeringcylinder.Theendsofthepistonrodextend frombothendsofthecylinder.Asinglepistonand thesealareatthecenteroftherod.Oilpressure ononesideofthepistonmovesthepistoninthe bore.Whenthepistonmovesinthebore,itpushes anequalamountofoilfromtheoppositeendofthe cylinder.Thisoilreturnstothesteeringcontrolunit.

Whenthepistonreachestheendofthestroke,arelief valvecontrolstheoilpressuresothecomponentsare notdamaged.Tierodsconnectthespindlearmsto thecylinder.

Eachspindleturnsontwotaperedrollerbearings. Thespindleandbearingsareheldintheaxleframe byakingpin.Thepreloadonthebearingsiscontrolledbyathreadednutonthebottomofthekingpin.

Thewheelorhubrotatesontwotaperedrollerbearingsandisheldonthespindlebyacastlenut.The preloadonthebearingsinthehubisadjustedbythe castlenut.Agreasesealintheinnerhubandahub capprotectthebearingsfromdirtandwater.Awear sleeveintheinnerhubprotectsthehubfromwear bytheseal.

REMOVE WARNING

PUTTINGTHELIFTTRUCKONBLOCKS

Thelifttruckmustbeputonblocksforsome typesofmaintenanceandrepair.Theremoval ofthefollowingassemblieswillcauselarge changesinthecenterofgravity:driveaxle, battery,orcounterweight.Whenthelifttruck isputonblocks,putadditionalblocksinthe followingpositions:

1.Ifthemastanddriveaxleareremoved,put blocksunderthecounterweightsothelift truckcannotfallbackward.

2.Ifthebattery(electriclifttrucks)orcounterweightisremoved,putblocksunderthe mastsothelifttruckcannotfallforward.

Putthelifttruckonblocksonasolid,even,and levelsurface.Makesuretheblocksofstands haveenoughcapacitytoholdthelifttruck.Use additionalblocksnexttothetiresasnecessary topreventmovementofthelifttruck.Make suretheliftingdevicesusedduringrepairscan lifttheweightofthepartsandassemblies.

NOTE: Thesteeringaxleassemblywithoutthe wheelsweighsapproximately115kg(250lb).

Thesteeringaxlecanberemovedwithoutremovingthecounterweight.Ifnecessary,removecounterweightasdescribedinthe Frame section.

1. Makesurewheelsaresetforstraighttravel.Put lifttruckonblockssosteeringaxlecanberemoved.Thetopoftheaxleframemusthave clearanceunderthecounterweightsothesteeringaxlecanberemoved.SeeFigure1.

2. Disconnecthydrauliclinesatsteeringcylinder. Installcapsoncylinderandputplugsinhydrauliclines.Thecapswillpreventspindles fromturningwhenaxleisremovedfromunder lifttruck.

3. Slideafloorjackorforksofanotherlifttruck understeeringaxle.Raiseliftingdeviceuntilit holdstheweightoftheaxleassembly.Remove fourcapscrewsandnutsthatfastentwobracketsunderrubbermounts.Removebracketsand slowlyloweraxleassemblyontowheels.Carefullyrollaxleassemblyfromunderlifttruck.

INSTALL

1. Installrubbermountsonaxleasfollows(seeFigure1):

a. E1.25-1.75XL(E25-35XL),J2.00-3.00XL (J40-60XL),H2.00-3.20XM(H40-65XM), J2.00-3.20XM(J40-60XM,J40-60XM 2) (A216),andJ2.00-3.20XM(J40-65Z) (A416/B416):MakesurePARTNO.on themountsisrightsideupandfacingaway fromaxleframe.

b. J1.25-1.75XL(Europeonly):Makesure PARTNO.onmountsisupsidedownand facingawayfromaxleframe.

2. Applyalubricantthatisapprovedforusewith rubbertorubbermount.Thelubricantisused wheretherubbermountfitsintotheframe brackets.

3. Useafloorjackoranotherlifttrucktoputsteeringaxleintopositioninframe.Makesurerubber mountsfitinsideframebracketsformounts.

4. Installbottombrackets.Tightenfourbracket capscrewsandnutsto88N•m(65lbfft).

5. Removeplugsandcapsandconnecthydraulic linestosteeringcylinder.

6. Operatesteeringsystemtoremoveairfromsystem.Turnsteeringwheelseveraltimesfromone stoptotheotherstop.Checkforhydraulicleaks.

WARNING

Completelydeflatethetiresbeforeremoving themfromthelifttruck.Airpressureinthe tirescancausethetireandrimpartstoexplode,causingseriousinjuryordeath.

Neverloosenthenutsthatholdtheinnerand outerwheelhalvestogetherwhenthereisair pressureinthetire.

1. Putaxleonblockssotiresareraisedfromfloor. Removegreasecap.Removecotterpinandcastle nut.Removeouterbearingcone.Slidewheel fromspindle.Removeinnerbearingconeand sealfromspindle.SeeFigure2.

2. Ifthewheelbearingsmustbereplaced,usea brassdrifttoremovebearingcupsandwear sleeve.

3. Repeatprocedureforotherwheel.

CLEAN

WARNING

Cleaningsolventscanbeflammableandtoxic andcancauseskinirritation.Whenusing cleaningsolvents,alwaysfollowthesolvent manufacturer’srecommendedsafetyprocedures.

Cleanallpartswithsolvent.Makesurebearingsare clean.

ASSEMBLEANDINSTALL CAUTION

Donotdamagethesealsduringinstallation.

1. Ifwheelbearingsmustbereplaced,useapress toinstallnewbearingcupsinwheelorhub.See Figure2.Installnewwearsleeveinwheelor hub.Installgreasesealonspindle.Lubricate bearingconeswithgrease.Makesurebearings arefilledwithgrease.Installbearingconeon spindle.

2. Carefullyslidewheelorhubontospindle.Install outerbearingcone.

3. Installcastlenut.Tightencastlenutto200N•m (150lbfft)whilewheelisrotated.Loosennut tolessthan27N•m(20lbfft).Tightennutto 34N•m(25lbfft).Ifcotterpincannotbeinstalledwithnuttightenedto34N•m(25lbfft), tightencastlenutuntilcotterpincanbeinstalled.Installcotterpin.

4. Repeatprocedureforotherwheel.

NOTE: Dirtandcorrosioncanmakethespacerdifficulttoremovefromthesteeringaxleframe.Amachinedspaceismadeinthetopofthespacersothat thespacercanberemovedwithabearingpuller.

Removewheelorhubfromsteeringaxlespindle.See Figure3.Removepintodisconnecttierodfromspindle.Removecotterpinandcastlenutfrombottomof kingpin.Useadrivertoremovekingpin.Remove sleeveandthenspindlefromaxle.Useadriverto removebearingsandsealsfromspindle.

INSTALL

1. Usenewbearingsandseals.SeeFigure2and Figure3.Applygreasetobearingsandkingpin astheyareinstalledinaxle.Installbearingsin spindle.Installsealsincorrectposition.Align spindleinaxleandinstallkingpin.Makesure newO-ringisinstalledattopofkingpin.Install sleeveonbottomofkingpin.Installcastlenut andtightenitto90N•m(66lbfft).Loosencastlenuttolessthan34N•m(25lbfft).Tighten nutto34N•m(25lbfft).Ifcotterpincannotbeinstalledwithnuttightenedto34N•m

(25lbfft),tightencastlenutuntilcotterpincan beinstalled.Installcotterpin.

2. Connecttierods.Verifybellevillewashersare installedonbothsidesofbushings.

2. Removesnapringsfrompinsintierods.Remove pins.

3. Removecapscrewsornutsandboltsthatfasten cylindertoaxleframe.Holdendcapsonshell andremovesteeringcylinder.

4. Holdendofsteeringcylinderoverdrainpan.Removecapforhydraulicfittingfromeachendcap. Pushrodtowardendofshellthatisoverdrain pan.Oilwilldrainfromcylinder.Repeatprocedureforotherend.

5. Carefullyslideoneendcapfromshell.Carefully pullcylinderrodandpistonfromshell.Keep cylinderrodalignedincenterofshellduringremovalsopartsarenotdamaged.Removeendcap fromrod.Removeotherendcapfromshell.Removeallseals,wipers,andO-rings.

CLEANANDINSPECT

WARNING

Cleaningsolventscanbeflammableandtoxic andcancauseskinirritation.Whenusing cleaningsolvents,alwaysfollowthesolvent manufacturer’srecommendedsafetyprocedures.

1. Cleanallpartsinsolvent.

2. Inspectpistonrodforgroovesordamage.Removesmallscratcheswithfineemerycloth.Inspectcylinderborefordamage.Inspectmounts forcracks.

ASSEMBLEANDINSTALL

1. Putsealsandwipersinwarmhydraulicoil.Installquadrantringandpistonsealasshownin Figure4.

CAUTION

DonotdamagetheO-rings,seals,orwipers duringinstallation.

2. LubricateO-rings,seals,andwiperswithO-ring lubricantandinstalltheminendcaps.Install oneendcaponcylinderrod.

3. Carefullyslidecylinderrodandpistonintoshell. Keepcylinderrodalignedincenterofshellduringinstallationsopartsarenotdamaged.Carefullyslideendcapintoshell.Carefullyinstall otherendcaponrodandshell.Putcapsonhydraulicfittingsofendcaps.

NOTE: OnJ2.00-3.00XL(J40-60XL)units,thenuts areagainsttheendcaps.

4. Holdendcapsandinstallcylinderonaxle frameusingcapscrewsornutsandcapscrews. OnH2.00-3.20XM(H40-65XM),J2.00-3.20XM (J40-60XM,J40-60XM 2)(A216),J2.00-3.20XM (J40-60Z)(A416/B416),tightencapscrewsto 225N•m(166lbfft).OnE/J1.25-1.75XL (E/J25-35XL)andJ2.00-3.00XL(J40-60XL), tightencapscrewsandnutsto165N•m (122lbfft).

5. Installtierodsbetweencylinderandspindles. Makesurebellevillewashersareoneachside ofthebushingsinthetierods.Installpinsand snaprings.

6. Removecapsandconnecthydrauliclinesto steeringcylinder.Operatesteeringsystemto removeairfromcylinderandhydraulicsystem. Turnsteeringwheelseveraltimesfromonestop totheother.

Thissectionhasthedescriptionandrepairproceduresforthesteeringhousingandthesteeringcontrolunit. Additionalinformationonpartsofthesteeringsystemcanbefoundinthe SteeringAxle and Hydraulic System servicemanualsectionsforyourlifttruck.

Description

Thesteeringcolumnassemblyusesasteeringcontrolunitwithhoseconnectionsonthebottomofthe unit.Thesteeringhousinghasmountsforthesteeringcolumnandthesteeringcontrolunit.Thesteeringwheelisinstalledonthesteeringcolumn.See Figure1.Thehousingisadjustableandisheldinpositionbyalatch.Thepositionofthehousingcanbe changedforoperatorcomfort.Thesteeringhousing isalsothemountforcontrolleversandsomeinstrumentclusters.

Thesteeringsystemisahydraulicsystemthatdoes nothaveamechanicalconnectionbetweenthesteeringwheelandthesteeringaxle.Thecontrolofthe steeringisthroughahydrauliccircuit.

Ifthehydraulicpumpforthesteeringsystemdoes notoperate,steeringisstillpossible.Acheckvalve permitsthesteeringcontrolunittocontrolthesteeringcylinder.Thelifttruckisdifficulttosteerwhen thesteeringpumpisnotoperating,butthesteeringcontrolunitcanoperatethesteeringcylinderand makesteeringpossible.

Operation

Thesteeringcontrolunitisarotaryvalveoperatedby thesteeringwheel.SeeFigure2.Duringthesteeringoperation,thesteeringcontrolunitcontrolsthe directionandamountofoilflowtothesteeringcylinder.Thesteeringcylinderintheaxleactuatesthe steeringlinkagetomovethesteertires.Hydraulic oilreturnsfromthesteeringcylindertothesteering controlunitandthentothehydraulictank.

Turningthesteeringwheelactuatesthreemain partsofthesteeringcontrolunit:thespoolforthe controlsection,thesleeveforthecontrolsection,and therotorinthemeteringsection.Whenthesteering wheelisnotmoving,thespoolandsleeveareheld inthe NEUTRAL (center)positionbysprings.Duringthistime,oilflowsfreelythroughthesteering controlunitbutnoneflowstothesteeringcylinder.

Asthesteeringwheelisturned,thespooljustbeginstorotate.Thespringstrytomovethesleeveto keepthe NEUTRAL positionbetweenthespooland sleeve.However,thenecessaryforcetoturntherotorisgreaterthanthepressureofthesprings.The springsbegintobend,lettingthespoolmoveasmall

amountwithinthesleeve.Thespoolstopsmoving whenittouchesthecenterpin.Inthisposition,the holesinthesleeveandthespoolarealigned.Oilcomingintothecontrolunitflowstothemeteringsection.

Morerotationofthesteeringwheelcausesthespool torotatethepin.Thisactioncausestherotationof thesleeveandtherotorinthemeteringsection.The oilthenflowstoonesideofthesteeringcylinder.Oil fromtheothersideofthecylinderreturnsthrough thecontrolsectionofthesteeringcontrolunit.

Whenthesteeringwheelstopsmoving,themeteringactioninthemeteringsectionalsostops.The NEUTRAL positionspringsreturnthesleevetothe NEUTRAL position,stoppingoilflowtoorfromthe cylinder.Thepressurestaysinthesteeringcylinder tokeepthesteertiresinposition.Oilfromthepump flowsthroughthesteeringcontrolunittothetankor otherpartsofthesystem.Toreturnthesteerwheels tothestraightposition,thesteeringwheelmustbe rotatedintheoppositedirection.Thesteeringcontrolunitwilloperateasdescribed,butallpartswill rotateintheoppositedirection.

Theupperendofthesteeringshafthassplinesforthe steeringwheel.Alargehexnutholdsthesteering wheelontothesteeringcolumn.Thehornbuttonis thecoverforthecenterofthesteeringwheel.The lowerendofthesteeringcolumnhassplinesoratang toengagethesteeringcontrolunit.SeeFigure5and Figure6.

Thesteeringcolumnassemblyisadjustableandheld inpositionbyalatch.Thepositionofthesteeringcolumnassemblycanbechangedasneededfordifferent operatorrequirements.Anaccesscoveronthesteeringcolumngivesaccesstothesteeringcontrolunit, keyswitch,hornswitch,andifinstalled,thedirectionswitch.

ASSEMBLYCOMPONENTS,REMOVE

NOTE: Thisprocedureisfortheremovalofallcomponentsofthesteeringcolumnassembly.Allcomponentsarenotoftenremovedforarepairprocedure. Doonlythosestepsoftheprocedurenecessarytoremovetherequiredcomponent.SeeFigure5andFigure6.

WARNING

Thehydraulichosesmustbeconnectedtothe correctportsorthesteeringsystemwillnotoperateasexpected,whichcancausedamageor personal injury.Makesurethehosesareidentifiedandconnectedcorrectly.

CAUTION

Disconnectthenegativebatterycableoninternalcombustiontrucks.Disconnectthebattery connectoronelectrictrucks.Disconnectthe batterybeforeremovinganycovers.

1. Attachatagonthebatteryconnectorornegative cablestatingDONOTCONNECTBATTERY. Movethesteeringcolumntothemost FORWARD position.Removethecolumntiltlever. Removetheupperandloweraccesscoversfrom thesteeringcolumn.

2. Removethekeyswitchandstaticstrapfromthe housingofthesteeringcolumn.Makeanidentificationoftheelectricwiresanddisconnectthem fromthekeyswitch.

3. OnunitswiththeDirectionControlHandle, Removethedirectionswitchassemblyfromthe housingofthesteeringcolumn.Makeanidentificationoftheelectricwiresanddisconnectthem fromthedirectionswitch.SeeFigure3.

CAUTION
