Description

Thesteeringaxleassemblyincludesanaxleframe, steeringcylinder,tierods,andtwospindleandhub assemblies.Thesteeringaxleisarticulatedandis connectedtotheframewithcenterpivotmounts.

Thecenterpivotmountspermitthesteeringaxle tomoveintheframemountwhenthelifttruck travelsoverroughsurfaces.SeeFigure1,Figure2, Figure3,andFigure4.

Theendcapsofthesteeringcylinderarealsothe mountsforthecylinderandareheldtotheaxleby capscrews.Theendsofthepistonrodextendfrom bothendsofthecylinder.Asinglepistonandthe

sealareatthecenterofthepistonrod.Oilpressure ononesideofthepistonmovesthepistoninthebore. Thepistonpushesanequalamountofoilfromthe oppositesideofthecylinder.Theoilreturnstothe steeringcontrolunit.

Whenthepistoninthesteeringcylinderreachesthe endofthestroke,areliefvalvecontrolstheoilpressure.Thereliefvalveforthesteeringsystemisin themanifoldblockthatisinstalledonthesteering controlunit.

Eachspindleturnsontwotaperedrollerbearingsin theaxleframe.Thepreloadonthebearingsiscontrolledbyshimsatthelowerbearingcap.Thetie rodsthatconnectthespindlearmstothecylinderdo nothaveanadjustment.

Thewheelhubsrotateontwotaperedrollerbearingsandareheldonthespindlesbyacastlenut. Thebearingpreloadofthewheelhubsisadjustedby thecastlenut.Thegreasesealsprotectthebearings fromdirtandwater.Wearsleevespreventtheseals fromcausingwearonthehub.

WARNING

Putthelifttruckonblocks.Followtheproceduresforraisingthelifttruckdescribedinthe OperatingManualforthislifttruck.Thesurfacemustbesolid,even,andlevel.Makesure theblocksaresolid,one-pieceunits.Makesure theliftingdevicesusedduringrepairscanlift theweightoftheparts.

Thesteeringaxlecanberemovedwithoutremoving thecounterweight.

1. Makesurewheelsaresetforstraighttravel.Put blocksunderframeinfrontofsteerwheelsand undercounterweightsosteeringaxlecanberemoved.Thetopoftheaxleframemusthave clearanceunderthecounterweightsothatthe steeringaxlecanberemoved.

2. Itisnotrequired,butitcanmakeremovalofthe axleeasierifwheelsareremoved.SeeWheels andHubsRepair(AllUnits)forwheelremoval. Disconnecthydrauliclinesatsteeringcylinder. Installcapsoncylinderandputplugsinhydrauliclines.Capswillpreventspindlesfrom turningwhenaxleisremovedfromthelifttruck.

3. Slideafloorjackorforksofanotherlifttruck understeeringaxle.Raiseliftingdeviceuntilit holdstheweightoftheaxleassembly.Remove fourcapscrewsandnutsthatfastentwobracketsunderrubbermounts.Removebracketsand

slowlyloweraxleassembly.Carefullyremove axleassemblyfromunderlifttruck.

Install

1. Installrubbermountsonaxle.Makesurepart numberisawayfromaxleframeandtapered edgeofrubbermountisatthetop.SeeFigure1 andFigure3.

2. Applyalubricantthatisapprovedforusewith rubber(tirelubricant)totherubbermounts. Lubricantisusedwhererubbermountfitsinto framebrackets.

3. Useafloorjackoranotherlifttrucktoputsteeringaxleintopositionintheframe.Makesure rubbermountsfitinsideframebracketsforthe mounts.Ifnecessary,lowerweightofthelift truckontoaxletomakesurerubbermountsfit completelyinframebrackets.

4. Installbottombracketsforrubbermounts.

H3.50-5.00XL(H70-110XL)(G005)units. Tightenfourboltsforbracketsto88N•m (65lbfft).

S3.50-5.50XL(S70-120XL)(D004),S3.505.50XM(S70-120XM)(E004,F004),E3.505.50XL(E70-120XL,E70-120XL 3)(C098),and E3.50-5.50XL,E4.50XLS(E70-120Z,E100ZS) (D098/E098)units. Tightenfourboltsto 110N•m(81lbfft).

5. Removeplugsandcapsandconnecthydraulic linestosteeringcylinder.Installwheelsifthey wereremoved.

6. Operatesteeringsystemtoremoveairfromsystem.Turnsteeringwheelseveraltimesfromone wheelstoptootherwheelstop.Checkforhydraulicleaks.

Putthelifttruckonblocks.Followtheproceduresforraisingthelifttruckdescribedinthe OperatingManualforthislifttruck.Thesurfacemustbesolid,even,andlevel.Makesure theblocksaresolid,one-pieceunits.Makesure theliftingdevicesusedduringrepairscanlift theweightoftheparts.

Thesteeringaxlecanberemovedwithoutremoving thecounterweight.

1. Makesurewheelsaresetforstraighttravel.Put blocksunderframeinfrontofsteerwheels,so steeringaxlecanberemoved.Topofaxleframe musthaveclearanceundercounterweightso steeringaxlecanberemoved.

2. Itisnotrequired,butitcanmakeremovalof theaxleeasierifthewheelsareremoved.Disconnecthydrauliclinesatsteeringcylinder.Installcapsoncylinderandputplugsinhydraulic lines.Capswillpreventspindlesfromturning whenaxleisremovedfromunderthelifttruck.

3. Removetwodustcoversfromopeningsofbearing caps.

4. Slideafloorjackorforksofanotherlifttruck understeeringaxle.Raiseliftingdeviceuntilit holdsweightofaxleassembly.Removefourcapscrewsandwashersthatfastentwobearingcaps toframe.Removebearingcapsandslowlylower axleassembly.Carefullyremoveaxleassembly fromunderlifttruck.

Install WARNING

Excessiveplayinthepivotbushingswillresult inincreasedshockloadingstothepivotpins andincreasedmovementoftheaxle,andmay affectsteeringresponsiveness.Ifmovementin thepivotbushingsismorethan4mm(0.16in.), ordamagetotheO-ringsealsexists,replace thebushings,flanges,andO-rings.

1. InstallO-ring,spacer,andshimsoneachpivot shaft.Lubricatepivotshaftswithmultipurpose greaseandinstallfiberbushing.SeeFigure2 andFigure4.

2. Useafloorjackoranotherlifttrucktoputsteeringaxleintopositioninframe.Makesurefiber bushingsfitintomountsofframe.

3. Installbearingcaps.

H6.00-7.00XL(H135-155XL,H135-155XL 2) (F006,G006)units. Tightencapscrewsto 320N•m(236lbfft).

H8.00-16.00XL(H165-360XL)(D019,E007), andH8.00-12.00XM(H170-280HD)(F007, G007,H007),H13.00-14.00XM(H300-330HD) (E019,F019,G019),H16.00XM-6(H360HD) (E019,F019,G019),H10.00-12.00XM-12EC (H360HD-EC)(E019,F019,G019)units. Tightencapscrewsto380N•m(280lbfft).After installation,makesurethereiszeroclearance betweenshimsandframe.Addorremoveshims asnecessarytogetzeroclearance.

4. Installdustcoversinopeningsofbearingcaps.

5. Removeplugsandcaps,andconnecthydraulic linestosteeringcylinder.Installwheelsifthey wereremoved.

6. Operatesteeringsystemtoremoveairfromsystem.Turnsteeringwheelseveraltimesfromone wheelstoptootherwheelstop.Checkforhydraulicleaks.

WheelsandHubsRepair(AllUnits)

REMOVEANDDISASSEMBLE

WARNING

Completelyremovetheairfromthetirebefore removingthe tireandwheelfromlifttruck. Airpressure inthetirescancausethetireand wheelpartstoexplode,causingseriousinjury ordeath.

1. Raiseaxleto removeweightfromtires,buthave tiresstilltouchingthefloor.Loosenwheelnuts justenough sotheycanbeeasilyremoved.Raise axlesotirescanberemoved.Useatirejackto removetiresandwheels.

2. Ifatirejackisnotavailable,raiseaxleonly enoughsotiresarejusttouchingthefloor.Slide tiresfrom axlewhiletheyarestillonthefloor.

3. Removehub cap,cotterpinandwasher. Remove outerbearingcone,outerbearingcup, andremovehubfromspindle.

4. Remove innerbearingcone,innerbearingcup andwearsleeve.

5. Remove greasesealfromspindle.

6. Repeat procedureforotherhub.

CLEAN

WARNING

Cleaningsolventscanbeflammableandtoxic andcancause skinirritation.Whenusing cleaningsolvents,alwaysfollowtherecommendationsofthemanufacturer.

Cleanallpartswithsolvent.Makesurebearingsare cleananddry.

INSPECT

Inspectspindletoensureitdoesnothaveanyrough orsharpareasthatwouldpreventthebearingsfrom beingcorrectlyinstalled.Ifnecessary,smoothany roughorsharpareasbeforeinstallingthebearings.

ASSEMBLEAN DINSTALL

1. Ifbearings inhubsmustbereplaced,useapress toinstall newbearingcupsinhub.Installanew wearsleeveinwheelhub.

CAUTION

Donotdamagethesealsduringinstallation.

2. Installgreasesealonspindle.Lubricatebearing conesandsealsurfaceswithgrease.Makesure bearingsarefilledwithgrease.Installbearing coneonspindle.

3. Carefullyslidehubontospindle.Onsomeunits, thehubweighsenoughtorequirealiftingdevice duringinstallation.Installouterbearingcone.

Addairtothetiresonlyinasafetycage.Inspectsafetycagefordamagebeforeuse.When addingair,useacliponchuckwithenough hosetolettheoperatorstandclearofthecage.

6. Installwheelonhub.Becarefulnottodamage threadsonstuds.

b. Startwithwheelnutatthetopandtighten nutsto65to130N•m(48to96lbfft)in sequenceshown.Makesurethereisnodirt betweenwheelandhub.Thewheelmustfit overthepilotsurfaceandbetightagainstthe hub.Tightennutsto640to680N•m(472to 502lbfft).

WARNING

Whenthewheelshavebeeninstalled,check allwheelnutsafter2to5hoursofoperation. Tightenthenutstothecorrecttorque.When thenutsstaytightafteran8-hourcheck,the intervalforcheckingcanbeextendedtotime specifiedinthePeriodicMaintenancesection.

2. Lubricatebearingswithwheelbearinggrease. Makesurebearingsarefilledwithgrease.Ifnecessary,pressnewbearingcupsintosteeringaxle frameandbearingcap.Installwearsleevein steeringaxleframe.
