The 1953-54 session of the Fort Smith Junior College, the twenty-fifth annual session, marks the beginning of a new era in the history of the College, the emergence of the Fort Smith Community College. Today, the Community College is dedicated to a program of education for civic, social, and economic development, a program of training integrated with the growth and advancement of the Fort Smith area.
Elmer H. Cook President
Yours will be an era of industrial and scientific development which will surpass, by far, even the imagination pf the past and present generations. You must prepare yourselves to cope with problems that are yet inconceivable, and I have no doubt that you will master them. Your actions indicate that you are developing initiative in your work, logic in your reasoning, and intellectual ability in your training. As long as we of the older generations can see signs of these characteristics developing in our young people, we need have no fear of the future. Best wishes for a long life, filled with peace and happiness, to each of you. Sincerely yours,
E. T. Vines, Dean

Editor of the Lion's Roar for the second semester, Wanda Joiner was outstanding in a wide variety of activities, ranging from art editor o f ' t h e Numa to member of the cheerleading squad; at the same time m a i n t a i n i n g a scholastic average which earned her membership in Phi Thcta Kappa. Wanda was also Student body secretary for the first semester, and a member of the student board for the second semester.
A member of Phi Theta Kappa, and vice-president of the Student body for the first semester, David Brumley was outstanding in qualities of leadership and personality. He was active in the work of the student board, was president of the International Relations club, and Vice-president of the Math club. David's unassuming efficiency was a valuable asset to the organizations of which he was a member.
The Numa is one of Cclia Pola's contributions to the Junior College. As Numa editor, she exhibited outstanding qualities of leadership and faithfulness to duty. She was also head cheerleader, secretary of the Sophomore Class, Vice-president of the F. T. A., and a representative to the Student Board. Celia contributed much as a member of the staff of the Lion's Roar, not only through her active work on the paper, but through her ready wit and her volatile personality. She was active in social activities of the college, and was the guiding force behind various floor shows and skits.
James Curry, aptly nicknamed "Spearhead", was one of the outstanding leaders in most college activities. James displayed his versatility through such diverse activities as being president of the Student body, president of the Veterans Club, and president of Phi Theta Kappa. He was also an active member in the International Relations Club.
As captain and one of the star players of the girls basketball team, Mary Raney distinguished herself not only in athletics, but in leadership in other activities. She was president of the Future Teachers of America, a student board representative, and secretary of the Sophomore class for the first semester.
With his interest in all things that would benefit the Junior College, Bill Foster, without fanfare, displayed qualities of leadership and ability that earned for him a place in the Hall of Fame. Bill has served as president of Sophomore class, and as president of the Math Club.
Sally Wcrnette was elected to the Hall of Fame on the basis of her outstanding leadership. She was president of the Student Body for the first semester. Sally was also secretary of Phi Theta Kappa, a member of the International Relations Club, and a member of the Numa business staff. She has taken part in the various dramatic activities of the college, and played on the girls' basketball team.
Chosen for his outstanding scholastic ability, Larry Gay has a 6 point average. Larry also has a delightful personality and was a leader in the work of the Math Club and the International Relations Club. He was also vice president of Phi Theta Kappa.
Known especially as the star reportei of Fort Smith J u n i o r College, Bobby Woods, with her a b i l i t y to express herself w i t t i l y and interestingly both verbally and in print, was chosen on the basis of both grades and personality. Bobby was associate editor of the Lion's Roar, reporter for Phi Theta Kappa, a member of International Relations Club, and was active in dramatics.
Elected reporter for the state organization of the Future Teachers of America, John Kagy was a leader in the work of the local chapter ot F. T. A. as well as in other activities on the campus. He was a member of the Junior College ensemble, and active in the French Club.
