FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS

Boreham Library

His six years at Junior College have been filled with hard work on behalf of his students. His interest and enthusiasm, his fine teaching, his help and encouragement have been invaluable to the Junior College and its students. To quote a JC instructor: "He is a moralist. A good teacher, and a solid economist, but most of all a moralist. That is why he is important. " We DEDICATE this 1959-60 NUMAto MR. CLAUDEYANCEY

E. T. VINES, PRESIDENT

FORT SMITH JUNIOR COLLEGE GRAND AVENUE AND WALDRON ROAD FORT

SMITH,

T. E. FULLER-TON, DEAN

ARKANSAS

February 15, 1960

Dear Students of 1959-60: "It is easier to gain knowledge than conceal ignorance.!f "To be ignorant of the past is to remain a child." "The difference between existence and life is the intelligent use of leisure." The above quotations from famous men of intellect suggest that you have made a wise choice in pursuing a college education. You will not be educated when you receive a degree, because education is a lifelong process; but you will be in a better position to become educated and, therefore, a more useful person. It is my sincere wish that each and every one of you shall have a very happy and prosperous life. Sincerely yours,

E. T. Vines President

KEN BAILEY. . . Ht. 5'9" Wt. 155 Fort Smith. . . . Fine floor-man, aggressive defensively, and the squad's leading scorer describe Ken's play over the season. A never-say-die spirit and tremendous enthusiasm made him one of the team's really outstanding members. FreshmanLetterman

HENRY BARNETT. . . H t . 6 ' 0 " W t . 155 Fort Smith. . . . Although suffering a broken nose requiring surgery just after the Christmas holidays, Henry proved his desire and spirit by returning to the squad immediately. Probably the team's most aggressive player, he was happiest when defensing the opponents toughest scorer and clearing a rebound off the board. Freshman-Letter man

JOE GELZINE. . . Ht. 6'4" Wt. 190 Fort Smith. . . . Elected Captain of the 1959-60 "Lions", Joe proved his worth by adding the rebound needed by the small "Lions" throughout the season. His fall-away jump shot off the post made him a target of every club on the season schedule. Sophomore-Letter man

DALE GRIFFITHS, . .Ht. 5'10"Wt.l65 Fort Smith . . . . Lacking previous basketball experience, "Griff" developed rapidly over the season. Though playing only a small portion of the time, his competitive spirit and enthusiasm was a constant inspiration to the entire squad. Freshman

JAMES GRIGSBY. . . Ht. 5 l l l ! " W t . l 5 0 Hartford. . . . Though lacking in size for college basketball, Jim asked no quarter from anyone. His fierce desire to excell and improve made him one of the toughest competitors on the squad. Freshman

JERRY McBRIDE . . Ht. 5'10" Wt. 160 Van Buren . . . . Probably the best jump shooter on the squad, Jerry made tremendous improvement in other departments throughout the season. Known for his high-arched shot from 30 feet out he was a constant threat to the other squad members for a spot on the first unit. Freshman

BILL M O S S . . . H t . 6'0" Wt. 150 Fort Smith. . . . A driving lay-up or a floating jump shot around the keyhole made Bill a constant threat to opposing players. A good defensive player, Bill was a great asset to this y e a r ' s "Lions". Sophomore-Letterman

MILT OWENS... Ht. 6'6" Wt. 195 Fort Smith. . . . The team's largest player, he was probably the squad's most improved player over the season. Lacking basketball experience, he made it evident immediately that he intended to learn and improve. A mixer under the basket, along with his improvement in offensive ability should stand him in good stead next year. Freshman

JAMES REYNOLDS. . .Ht. 6'3"Wt. 165 Fort Smith. . . . A fine jump shooter, James really came into his own during the 59-60 season. Elected Co-Captainby his teammates, James set about to prove his worth to his team. He did so by becoming the squad's second leading scorer and third leading rebounder. SophomoreLetterman

JIMMY SIMMONS. . .Ht. 5'9" Wt. 160 Mountainburg. ... A really fine offensive player, his size hindered his play in college. A determined defensive player, he was a constant source of irritation to the opponents. His short jump shot was one of the most accurate on the squad. Sophomore

PAUL WHISENHUNT. . . Ht. 6'2" Wt. 165 Hartford. . . . Though lacking in size he became one of the team's scoring aces, second only to Bailey and Reynolds. His deep desire to excell made him one of the finest rebounders in the school's history. Freshman-Letter man
