THE TRANSFORMATION TO CONSUMER-DRIVEN HEALTHCARE

Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort

Welcome to the 2015 UAB Symposium for Healthcare Executives Thank you for joining us in our 35th consecutive year of offering healthcare leaders an opportunity to learn in a beautiful environment. This year we are celebrating our Department of Health Services Administration’s 50th Anniversary. We’ve seen incredible growth and change over 50 years, but one constant has been our focus on excellence. Today, our Masters in Health Services Administration program is ranked No. 2 in the country and our Undergraduate Health Care Management program is the No. 1-ranked online program of its type. Our school’s research funding is rapidly approaching the $14 million level. As we begin the next 50 years, we see opportunities for growth and expansion. We are enhancing our research efforts through the Center for Health Organization Transformation, a National Science Foundation program. Our Center for Healthcare Management and Leadership offers programs like this Symposium and more. We join you this week to learn from experts and share good ideas. We look forward to getting to know you and together we can improve the health of the communities we serve. Enjoy your visit here to Sandestin! Harold P. Jones, Ph.D. Dean UAB School of Health Professions

Welcome to the 35th Annual UAB Symposium for Healthcare Executives. It’s an exciting time for healthcare leaders as we work to improve health and healthcare in the United States and beyond. Our theme this year is The Transformation to Consumer-Driven Healthcare. The concept of the patient as partner poses many challenges. We’ll explore those in depth over the next few days, including consideration of how behavior of consumers may affect our success in population health and how we can improve performance and develop strong teams. We’ll examine the financial aspects of population health and how we manage, plan, and build healthcare organizations of the future. I want to thank the many faculty and staff who have worked hard to make this program successful. This year we have partnered with American College of Health Care Executives (ACHE) chapters from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, and with Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) chapters from Alabama and Florida. These partnerships allowed us to expand the program and make it much more valuable to you. We thank the leaders of those groups for their help. We are also fortunate to have a strong group of sponsors who have generously supported the Symposium. I hope you are all able to visit with them while you are here. Thanks to each of you for attending our Symposium. We look forward to learning from you as we improve our healthcare organizations and the health of our patients and communities. Have a great Symposium! Christy Harris Lemak, Ph.D. Professor and Chair Department of Health Services Administration
