2018 ANNUAL REPORT
LETTER FROM THE DEAN
Hello, This is my final message to you as Dean of the UAB School of Health Professions and what I want to say most of all is thank you. Thank you for this opportunity. In 2001, this was the opportunity of a lifetime and today I am proud to say that this School has defined my life’s work. Thank you for your support. Over the past five years alone, we have added 2,118 students and more than 30 programs, degrees, certificates, and tracks. That doesn’t happen without everyone’s help. Thank you for your dedication. It is you who executes the vision and you who guarantees success – for you I am grateful. And most of all… Thank you for you. Our alumni, partners, community members, friends, students, staff, faculty, and the countless others associated with our efforts are what makes the School of Health Professions the best. You are what I will miss the most. And with that said, I wish the new Dean all the best because I firmly believe everyone involved with the School deserves the best. Thank you,
Harold P. Jones, PhD Dean, School of Health Professions 2001 – 2019
Harold P. Jones, PhD: Dean of Strategy
On March 31, 2019, Harold P. Jones, Ph.D., retired as dean of the UAB School of Health Professions after more than 18 years of unparalleled growth and success. The longest tenured dean at the University of Alabama at Birmingham departs after nearly two decades of challenging traditional university practices that have the reputation for telling a community what it needs. Jones’ strategy, since day one, on May 1, 2001, has been to listen to community needs, focus on school resources, tailor innovative solutions, and collaborate with partners to expand impact. Jones’ first decade in Birmingham is highlighted by major partnerships working on large-scale healthcare problems. 2001 – 2011
J
ust prior to Jones’ arrival, the School of Health Professions launched the Clinical Nutrition Research Center with a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Today, the center known as the UAB Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) is funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and one of only 11 NORC locations in the United States. It is home to 170 regular, affiliated and mentored member scientists, 37 postdoctoral trainees, and 15 predoctoral students dedicated to foster a multidisciplinary approach to basic, clinical, and translational research and research training. In 2008, Jones was instrumental in establishing the Diabetes Research and Training Center in the School. Within a few years, it became another NIDDK-funded center, the UAB Diabetes Research Center (DRC). It is one of only 17 in the United States and the only NIDDK diabetes centers located in the Deep South. In 2009, the School joined forces with the Lakeshore Foundation to develop a world-class research program in rehabilitative science -

the UAB / Lakeshore Research Collaborative. In 2012, Jones recruited James H. Rimmer, PhD, a leading expert in rehabilitative science for 30 years, to become the inaugural Lakeshore Foundation Endowed Chair in Health Promotion and Rehabilitation Sciences and director of the research collaborative. There are 25 ongoing projects supported by funding from places like the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), the NIH, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to paving the way for these critical institutions, Jones led the School to record enrollment numbers by 2011. However, the following year UAB moved some academic programs around campus and the resulting shifts meant the School of Health Professions lost 31 percent of its student population. The second half of Jones’ tenure at UAB is defined by his efforts to return the School to record student levels and development of a Strategic Plan to meet the School’s vision “To be recognized as the leading school of health professions – shaping the future of healthcare.” 2012 – TODAY
B
y 2015 – less than four years after UAB shifted programs away – the School made it back to the record student levels of 2011. And since 2015, the School has increased enrollment by another 32 percent to an all-time record 2,439 students. The major factor in this unmatched growth? A comprehensive strategic plan. In 2012, after more than a year of research and planning, the Dean unveiled the UAB School of Health Professions’ Strategic Plan 2013 – 2018. The plan, “Building on Strengths”, was the first comprehensive look at the future created by any School at UAB in the 21st century.
The results were phenomenal. By the end of 2016 – two years ahead of schedule – the School had completed 80 percent of the 167 action items. Rather than coast to the finish line, Jones decided to take advantage of the momentum and extend the scope of the Strategic Plan. He spent 2017 listening to his constituents and in early 2018 he unveiled a new plan to continue the excellence of a School where every program that is eligible to be ranked by U.S. News & World Report is ranked.

LEGACY
W
hen UAB began “a strategic planning process to chart our institution’s course through the 21st century” they asked Dr. Jones to join the University Strategic Planning and Fiscal Affairs team because of his success with the SHP strategic plan. When UAB abruptly cancelled the football, bowling and rifle programs, the university asked Dr. Jones – who was named an honorary UAB football letterman in the mid-2000s – to join a task force to thoroughly review the financial report that led to that decision. He helped the task force create a 97-page report that “determined that keeping the three sports could be viable” and ultimately UAB reinstated all three sports. When UAB needed someone to chair the 19-person committee that would identify a new athletic director they once again included Dr. Jones and once again he delivered with unprecedented focus. In terms of UAB spirit there is no other like Jones. The only dean to dress up at homecoming every year led the School to winning the UAB Homecoming Spirit Award every year from 2004 – 2009 and guided the School to victory in the majority of Building Decoration contests the past 17 years – including the last two. And in one of his final acts as UAB School of Health Professions Dean, Jones asked students, staff, faculty, and alumni to follow his example of active service and become vital participants in the School’s future. “It is only through your participation that we can ensure that the School continues on the extremely positive trajectory that exists because of your past and current efforts,” said Jones. “I encourage you to strongly participate in the Dean candidate’s interview process and express your thoughts so UAB can build on the foundation of SHP that we, and others before us, have poured together.”
