Welcome, Alumni and Friends! We are delighted to share this celebration with you. This evening is a very special opportunity to recognize an important milestone for our Department. Tonight we gather to joyfully recognize our past success and to toast our future endeavors. Above all, we recognize the lasting legacy of the Department’s alumni and your impact on health care and beyond.
Christy Harris Lemak, PhD Professor and Chair, Department of Health Services Administration
Through five decades, we have counted on you to help us develop future leaders. You have come through in so many ways, such as mentoring students, hiring residents, guiding fellow alumni, lecturing in our classrooms, volunteering on committees, and providing generous financial support. We want to thank the alumni who have given generously of their time, in many advisory committees and other roles. In particular, we acknowledge the alumni who served on three committees to make this celebration spectacular (their names are on page 7). We also thank the organizations and individuals who provided financial support for the event, as sponsors and tribute sponsors. Who could have imagined in 1965 that we would educate over 4,000 alumni who lead around the globe? Who knows what we will accomplish in the next 50 years? We pause tonight to celebrate excellence past, present, and future. We are grateful for all you have done and will continue to do to help us develop leaders who will shape tomorrow’s health care. Congratulations on your success. Thank you for being here to celebrate with us. Happy 50th, HSA!

ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER
This is an opportunity for you, the seasoned health care leader, to educate future leaders and collaborate with our academic team. Your area of health care. Your unique point-of-view. Your personal experience.
Often, one shining moment can change how a student feels about a subject or even change their career choices. Are you looking to be that brilliant light for one or two lectures? Join us as a guest lecturer.
Prefer a more personal scale for influencing others? Become a mentor. Each year we welcome hundreds of first generation college students, seasoned doctoral students and more. They need guidance. They need you. You will grow through the experience, too.
Every program needs true expertise. Advisory Boards are small groups of leaders with a vision of the future. You who recognize trends, who spot details in Big Data and pick out the patterns through noise. We need your expertise and leadership.

INVESTING IN THE NEXT 50 YEARS “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” — W I N S T O N C H U R C H I L L

INVEST
Building on our 50-year legacy of excellence, we have identified the following priorities to help sustain and enhance the department’s future. Your investment and our resources: Stronger together. Smarter together. Better together.
SCHOLARSHIPS As the healthcare industry transforms, the need for health care leaders grows. We believe that every student with the potential to excel in healthcare leadership should be able to do so. CRITICAL SCHOLARSHIPS: ◗ Most top universities offer some students a “full-ride” (100% tuition plus living expenses). ◗ Our national reputation allows us to compete for the top students. ◗ Many students leave full-time positions to attend school.
ENDOWED FACULTY POSITIONS The greatest institutions have the best minds, the most-creative researchers and the most-engaged teachers. Building a strong base of faculty talent enriches the academic environment and attracts the brightest students. PRIORITIES: ◗ Health Informatics Endowed Professorship ◗ Health Administration Endowed Professorship ◗ Health Care Quality and Safety Endowed Professorship
ENHANCE OUR IMPACT Alumni are our greatest assets. Through a dedicated support system, we can better engage you during each stage of your career. With dedicated funding, we can create meaningful opportunities for you to connect with our programs, students and other alumni. This will result in increased collaboration and greater career success for our graduates, as well as enhanced education programs and scholarly work. KEY GOALS: ◗ Launch and maintain key alumni programs such as Executives in Residence, mentoring and regional events. ◗ Expand alumni information to focus more on your interests, expertise and focus areas to encourage and foster alumni-to-alumni partnerships. ◗ Facilitate partnerships for consulting work combining alumni expertise, faculty research and student learning.

At Family Legacy we know a few things about the number 50. We are a 501©3 non-profit dedicated to serving the needs of the orphans of Zambia, Africa. The nation of Zambia commemorated its 50th year of independence in the year 2014. To properly recognize and celebrate this occasion, Family Legacy launched the “NEXT 50 YEARS” movement to transform that nation through the power of quality healthcare, private education, and spiritual counseling for the over one million orphan children.
A key component of this 50 year movement is to fulfill the dream of accessible, improved, quality health care through the establishment of a medical center. Under the guidance of our Chief Medical Director, UAB School of Medicine graduate, Dr. Brad Guffey and UAB Department of Health Care Administration graduate, Mr. Derrick Miles, the River of Life Children’s Medical Center will be designed to provide preventative and restorative care to tens of thousands of orphan children each year.
