Thanks to an overwhelmingly positive response to our fundraising we achieve our goal of $100,000 to endow the Marilyn Gossman Lectureship. The event is expected to be approved by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees at the April meeting. Once approved, the lecture will be held annually; beginning in 2014. The objective of the Marilyn Gossman Lecture for the Advancement of Physical Therapy is to promote awareness of and discussion around contemporary issues affecting the future of physical therapy practice. Activities conducted by the Marilyn Gossman Lecturer will benefit UAB students, faculty, clinical instructors and the Alabama physical therapy clinical community at-large. The first Gossman Lecture will be held on Friday, May 16 at 5:30 pm at UAB’s Volker Hall, Lecture room A. See page five for more details on this story. The UAB Department of Physical Therapy wishes to thank the many alumni and friends who contributed to the campaign.

UAB DPT Clinical Education News Clinical education tip During physical therapy school, many of us did not receive instruction on how to be an effective clinical instructor (CI). Some of us may be natural teachers but most of us could use further training especially when we face difficult learning situations. The American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program is an excellent course to learn how to be an effective clinical instructor and provides many resources for CIs to use in their clinic with their students. The APTA website has a list of upcoming Credentialed Clinical Instructor Programs that may be available in your area found under “Upcoming Events.” The APTA website also has other resources that CIs may find helpful, including regulations related to students, clinical site development forms, and clinical educator development documents. All of these resources can be found by clicking on “Educators” and then “Clinical Education.” Reviewing the clinical education resources on the APTA website or attending and reviewing materials provided at the Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program are great ways to become a more effective CI. Another method to improve as a CI is to undergo regular evaluation by your peers and through self-assessment. The APTA has developed a CI assessment form (found in the Reference Manual for Center of Coordinators of Clinical Education), but the local CCCEs wanted to develop a briefer tool. With this thought in mind, a group of local center coordinators of clinical education (CCCEs) with facilitation from me and Dave Morris developed a brief CI Assessment tool. This form has allowed local CCCEs to provide feedback to CIs after a clinical experience. This tool has also been used by local CIs to reflect on their own performance and generate plans to improve their teaching skills. We are now in the process of assessing the utility of the tool and determine if any other changes need to be made. However we would be glad to provide you a copy of this tool to try in your clinic. If you are interested please contact Donald Lein at dlein@uab.edu. Like all clinical skills, to become an effective CI, study, practice, and evaluation are needed. The above information should help you to further hone your teaching skills.
