CALL US UAB The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been an autonomous member of the University of Alabama system since 1969, and has had an intercollegiate athletic program since 1977. UAB is sometimes confused with the University of Alabama (Crimson Tide), which is located in Tuscaloosa; while this is inevitable, it is important to note that the two are indeed separate institutions. Please note that there are only two correct versions of our name, the acronym “UAB,” or the full “University of Alabama at Birmingham.” In addition, the Associated Press sports stylebook now uses UAB on first reference, not Alabama-Birmingham. We are:

#GoBlazers Sprints In the sprints, head coach Kurt Thomas is looking to his juniors and seniors to step up this season to score key points at the indoor and outdoor championships. After qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 4x100m Relay in 2013, the Blazers have been looking for a group to take over in the sprints. This season, UAB has a lot of youth that could fill the void. Transfers Breonca Reid and Shebli White could turn out to be the missing pieces Thomas and the Blazers have been looking for.
Middle Distance UAB has not had a true middle-distance performer since Alina Varpiotaite earned All-Conference USA honors in back-to-back seasons in 2007-08. Thomas is looking to his distance group to have the versatility to run the shorter distances, such as the 800m and 1,500m. The Blazers have performed well in the 1,500m and mile over the past few years, claiming eight all-conference honors since 2012. After setting the program’s freshman record last season in the mile, Sarah Livett is expected to focus on the 5,000m, leaving freshman Rebecca Evans as UAB’s top competitor in the 1,500m and mile.
Event Outlook
Distance UAB comes off a cross country season highlighted by three All-Conference USA performers. Junior Lucy Crookes finished 26th at the NCAA South Regional, missing out on an at-large bid to the finals by 0.4 seconds. Distance coach Tony Houchin will be looking to his top three runners from the fall to continue their success onto the track to make up for the points scored by Elinor Kirk last year. Kirk completed the single-best year in UAB history, earning two All-America honors, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 10,000m at the NCAA Finals.

Hurdles Thomas is excited about the prospects in the hurdles this season, especially in the shorter distances. Jessica Shelley and Autumnn Burnett are the top returners for the Green and Gold. Thomas is looking to Burnett to lead the way in the longer hurdle events after a disappointing end to last season. After qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminaries, Burnett was unable to compete after coming down with the flu. After some high points and lows, the hurdlers will need to put together a consistent, whole season for the Blazers to compete.
Jumps UAB may be the deepest in the jumping events that it has ever been, being led by three seniors in Shelby Barker, Kendra Gipson and Kelli Smith. Thomas believes that all three have the ability to not only score at the conference championships this season, but also end their careers with all-conference honors. Freshman Shanice Leach has the potential to compete with the three seniors in the jumps this season and capture crucial points that the Blazers have been unable to record in the past.
Multi-Events
@UAB_TrackXC
Event Outlook
Under the guidance of newly hired Reava Potter, the multi-events have become a new focus and altered its training from before. With a new focus on building endurance, UAB is looking to score higher in areas of the Pentathlon and Heptathlon that it had not seen much success in before. Shelby Barker is the team’s top returner after earning third team all-conference honors a year ago in the Heptathlon. Newcomers Ali Meister and Jimmeshia Wilder have the ability to score points for the Blazers. Thomas believes that the multi’s are one of the deepest areas on the team.

Q & A with
Coach Kurt Thomas
What are the expectations for the 2015 indoor and outdoor seasons? “We have a really young team. Out of the 30 student-athletes, we have 13 newcomers. Our expectations are always the same though, we want to compete in Conference USA and try to score as many points as we can. We have many student-athletes that have the capability to be all-conference performers and finish top three in their respective events at both the indoor and outdoor championships. Our expectations are to be our best. We bring back some all-conference competitors, such as senior Shelby Barker in the pentathlon and several others who have scored in the past for us. Because of our youth, a goal for us would be to learn how to compete at this level. We have so many freshmen and young student-athletes that we need to learn how to compete and have that carry on throughout the season into outdoor.” Who are you looking to this season to step up after losing a key group of seniors from 2014? “The cross country team just concluded its season, and we saw a lot of good things out of junior Lucy Crookes, freshman Rebecca Evans and sophomore Sarah Livett. We expect them to continue their running for this year and to step up in both indoor and outdoor to score some points for us. We return Shelby Barker and a few others on the sprints and jumps side. I’d like to see Breona Humphrey, Autumnn Burnett and Jessica Shelley really step up. They have been here a few years but have not run fast enough to score points for us. I think that they have the ability to do something special this year so I’d like to see them perform this season. We have a few other seniors in the long and triple jump, such as Kendra Gipson, Renay Ransaw and Kelli Smith, who have a lot of ability and can score in this conference.”
@UAB_TrackXC
Q & A with Coach
What are the advantages to hosting four meets this season at the Birmingham CrossPlex? “The advantage of hosting meets is that it is not scary. You have a lot of opportunities to run on a banked track and against a lot of good competition at our home meets. I think the main benefit is that there is not a lot of travel stress. You get to sleep in your own bed, drive yourself over to the meet and don’t need to be at the meet all day long if you don’t race until later. The student-athletes can get to the Birmingham CrossPlex when they need to and go through their pre-race routine in a nice, relaxed manner. Obliviously running on a world-class track is great as well and having the familiarity with it that other teams don’t is nice. We still need to show up and run our best no matter where we are. That is the thing about going to the CrossPlex so much, is that is becomes mundane. We need to break out of the mold, show up and compete no matter where we are.

K
urt Thomas was named head coach of the track & field program in December 2010, after serving as the interim head coach for the 2010 season. He is in his seventh year overall with the Blazers after serving as an assistant track & field coach from 2008-09. He works primarily with the UAB sprinters and hurdlers.
In 2014, the Blazers saw their most successful season unfold under the guidance of Thomas. Several school records were broken, including Elinor Kirk’s 32:17.05 in the 10,000-meter run. The time was the eighth fastest recorded in NCAA history and the third fastest in the history of Wales, Kirk’s home country. UAB posted 22 points at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., thanks to Kirk’s two-event All-America performance, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 10,000-meters. The Blazers were named to the top-25 poll by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on June 3, 2014, for the first time in school history, earning the No. 25 spot. In addidtion to Kirk’s successes, senior Neal Tisher set a new Conference USA record in the pole vault, winning the C-USA title with a leap of 14-0.5. Thomas coached multiple student-athletes to school records, highlights and awards during the 2013 season. Under his leadership, graduate student Eli Kirk earned 26 points at the Conference USA Indoor Championship and was named high point scorer of the meet for her efforts. She claimed the 3000m run championship and broke both school and meet records for the event, contested Feb. 23-24, with a time of 9:23.36. She also finished second in the mile run with a time of 4:43.73, nearly two seconds under the previous meet record. Kirk, along with Rhiannon Johns and the 4x100-meter relay team of Kyana White, Angel Watson, Shakima Knox and Alexis Bates all qualified for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. The 400-meter relay team punched its ticket to Eugene with a time of 44.81, as did Kirk, who broke a 5,000-meter mark she held earlier in the season. They, along with Johns, who qualified for the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:36.72, represented UAB at the national championship. Kirk finished 19th of 24 runners in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:25.62, while Johns finished 12th at the NCAA Championships. Following their success, the six Blazers earned the USTFCCCA All-American distinction. Johns was named second-team All-American, Kirk earned honorable mention honors, while the four members of the 4x100-meter relay team were also tabbed with honorable mention honors. Johns also earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District Team and the Conference USA All-Academic Track and Field Team. Thomas enjoyed success in his first year as head coach throughout the 2011 season as several student-athletes posted personal records, two school records were shattered and two athletes competed in the NCAA East Preliminaries. Rhiannon Johns qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5,000 meters for her first collegiate NCAA final.
Head Coach
In addition, Johns also captured her second-straight Conference USA 10,000-meter title, earning first-team all-conference honors. Akira McSwain also earned all-conference accolades as she finished third in the heptathlon at the C-USA Outdoor Championships.
Sprints
During his season as the interim head coach, UAB had five athletes qualify for the preliminary round of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and Nora Mehl provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in two events.
Alma Mater University of Tennessee (2004)
At the league indoor championships, Mehl became a Conference USA champion for the second time after taking the pentathlon title. Mehl and Akira McSwain received all-conference honors. At the C-USA Outdoor Championships, Rhiannon Johns won the 10,000-meter to become a C-USA champion and Lytrice Thomas and Bianca Le’Blanc both received all-conference accolades.

During the 2008 season, Thomas coached Erica Russ to a first-place finish in the 100m hurdles at the C-USA Outdoor Championships, running 13.41 and setting her own personal record. J.J. Scruggs was also crowned C-USA champion in the 400m hurdles, giving the Blazers conference champions in both outdoor hurdle events under Thomas’ guidance. Also at the C-USA Championships, senior Tara Colvin was the runner-up in the 400m, with a time of 53.93. To add to the records in 2008, Thomas’ athletes, Tara Colvin, J.J. Scruggs and Alina Varpiotaite, teamed up with middle distance senior Genoah Collins to shatter the 4x400m relay school record at the Texas Relays. The foursome ran a regional-qualifying time of 3:38.54 to finish runner-up to USC in Austin, Texas. During the 2007 season, Thomas coached three school record holders, three freshman record holders and 12 regional qualifiers. He guided fifth-year senior Penny Shields in breaking seven-time All-American Vonetta Flowers’ school record in the triple jump, with a jump of 41 - 6 1/2. Freshman Samantha Hamilton set the frosh record under Thomas’ coaching eye, jumping 41- 4. J.J. Scruggs also set a freshman record in the 400m hurdles, running 58.95 over the one-lap barriers. Prior to coming to UAB, Thomas spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Mississippi State. His primary responsibilities included coaching hurdlers, jumpers and women’s sprinters. While there, he coached several relay teams and individuals to first-place finishes. He also helped his athletes break four Mississippi State Outdoor Track and Field records, and set 33 personal-best marks. Before his stint at Mississippi State, Thomas was a student assistant at the University of Tennessee. During his three years in Knoxville, Thomas assisted with the men’s program and was a member of two Southeastern Conference championship teams and two NCAA national championship squads. Thomas also assisted with the UT Championship Track and Field Camps and coached the Knoxville Track Club. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in history. Thomas has three USATF Level II certifications in sprints, hurdles, relays, combined events and jumps. He is a native of Hobbs, N.M., where he graduated from Hobbs High School as an all-state sprinter. Thomas and his wife Jill have two sons, Toliver Knox and Lucas David, and a dog named Rosie.

T
ony Houchin, who was hired in January 2011, serves as an assistant coach with the track and field program, and is also the head coach for UAB’s cross country program.
With his main concentration on the cross country team, Houchin also works with the distance runners during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. Seven of the Blazers’ eight All-American distance runners have come under the direction of Houchin.
Anthony Houchin
Under Houchin’s tutelage, 2014 marked the most successful season for the distance program. During the indoor campaign, Elinor Kirk claimed three Conference USA titles on her way to being the high point scorer and performer of the meet. Kirk was named a USTFCCCA Indoor All-American in both the 3,000 and 5,000-meter events. In the outdoor season, Kirk broke several records on her way to claiming two C-USA titles and earning all-america honors in two events during the outdoor season. She finished second in the 10,000-meters at the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Ore., turning in a 32.32.99. Earlier in the season, Kirk ran the 8th-fastest 10,000-meters in NCAA history, posting a time of 32:17.05. The time was the third-fastest time recorded in the event that year to date and was No. 2 all-time for her native country of Wales. Kirk came back two days after her 10,000-meter performance at the NCAA Finals with a 15:57.96 5,000-meter run to claim seventh place. Her 10-point effort was the sole contribution to UAB’s 22nd-place team finish. Kirk capped her career with six UAB records and six C-USA titles throughout her career. She was the first Blazer to be named the C-USA Track Athlete of the Year and USTFCCCA South Region Athlete of the Year. In addition to Kirk’s success in 2014, Houchin guided Sarah Livett to the UAB freshman record in the indoor 3,000-meter with a time of 9:48.57 and the mile with a 4:59.14. Houchin was a vital part of Rhiannon John’s and Kirk’s distance success during the 2013 season. Under his direction, Kirk earned 26 points at the C-USA Indoor Championship and was named high point scorer of the meet for her efforts. She claimed the 3000-meter run championship and broke both school and meet records for the event, contested Feb. 23-24, with a time of 9:23.36. BSC Icebreaker - Dec. 6, 2013 The UAB track and field team opened its 2013-14 season on Friday at the BSC Icebreaker with 11 top5 finishes, two event wins and a broken school record in pole vault. “We had a real solid meet,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “I think we accomplished all of our goals. The sprinters and jumpers came out and executed pretty well, some of our newcomers got some race experience, and the distance girls were able to get some shorter distance work.”
UAB Blazer Invitational - Jan. 10-11, 2014 Saturday’s final round of competition at the 3rd Annual UAB Blazer Invitational saw multiple meet, CrossPlex and school records broken, highlighted by the women’s 3,000-meter run, men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relay and men’s pole vault events. “As far as our meet goes, I couldn’t be happier,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “Great teams and athletes came to our meet and put on a show. Almost all of our meet records were broken, and several top NCAA marks happened this weekend. All the staff worked really hard to put on a first class meet.”
Vanderbilt Indoor Invite - Jan. 24-25, 2014 Elinor Kirk broke the UAB all-time record for the indoor mile run and Neal Tisher broke a facility record and her own UAB all-time mark in the pole vault to lead the UAB track and field team to completion of the Vanderbilt Indoor Invite. Just two weeks after breaking UAB’s all-time record in the 3,000-meter run, Kirk broke the 1-mile run record by four seconds at the Vanderbilt Student Recreation Center. The graduate student from Swansea, Wales, ran a 4:39.08 to win the 1-mile run competition, breaking the facility record and her own UAB all-time record of 4:43.73.
Samford Multi and Invite - Feb. 7-8, 2014 Neal Tisher tied her own UAB record in the pole vault and Sarah Livett broke a UAB freshman record to lead the UAB track and field team to completion of the Samford Multi & Invite at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Tisher leaped to a 4.00m height (13-1 ½) which ties her school record that she set this year. Livett ran a 9:48.57 in the 3,000-meter run to break the UAB freshman record of 9:52.56 set by Rhiannon Johns in 2009. Lauren Scott placed 21st in the run with a 10:26.22.
Neal Tisher continued her dominance in the pole vault competition to break her own UAB record for the third time in four meets, and freshman Sarah Livett topped her own school freshman mark in the mile run to lead the UAB track and field team at the Cupid Classic at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Following a 12-7 ½ jump in the BSC Icebreaker, and back-to-back jumps of 13-1 ½, Tisher raised the bar again on Friday with a jump of 4.06m (13-3 ¾). In four meets as a Blazer, Tisher has now broken or tied UAB records in each appearance.

#GoBlazers C-USA Indoor Championships - Feb. 28-March 1, 2014 UAB’s Elinor Kirk won meet high point honors for the second consecutive year as the Blazers wrapped up a successful weekend of competition at the Conference USA Track and Field Championships. The Blazers placed third as a team in the two-day meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex, narrowly missing a runner-up finish and not far off the winning total. UAB finished with 71.50 points, trailing only champion East Carolina (88) and UTSA (73).
NCAA Indoor Championships - March 13-14, 2014 UAB’s Elinor Kirk opened up competition at the NCAA Championships and finished 10th in the 5,000m run with a time of 16:36.12. She finished in the top-10 of 16 runners after qualifying with a 15:44.38, which ranked sixth-best nationally entering the race. Due to the race being in Albuquerque, the NCAA conversion brings Kirk’s official time down to 16:09.78.
Alabama Relays - March 21-22, 2014 “We had a decent start to the outdoor season,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “There’s always a small transition from indoor to outdoor to adjust to and we experienced those things this weekend. It was mostly a good meet and we had some good signs for the rest of outdoor, and we got some good experience for some athletes who we’ll need later in the season.” Neal Tisher led the way for UAB on the day, winning the pole vault competition by a tenth of a second and breaking UAB’s all-time record. The graduate student finished with a 4.07m (13-4 ¼), which broke the Blazers’ old record of 3.50m set by Toni Hawkins in 2012.
Florida Relays / Stanford Invite - April 3-5, 2014 Autumnn Burnett, Jessica Shelley, Akira McSwain and Neal Tisher combined to run a 56.41 in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay to finish ninth, which breaks UAB’s school record of 56.96 set back in 2005. The 4x400-meter relay team of Shelby Barker, Kandiss Briggs, Burnett and Fanta Diabate ran a 3:42.78 to finish 26th, a seasonal best.
2014 Meet-by-Meet
Elinor Kirk ran the NCAA’s fastest time of the season in the 10,000-meter run to finish second at the Stanford Invitational, and Sarah Livett broke UAB’s freshman record in the 5,000-meter run to lead UAB’s track and field team to multiple successes.
Tennessee Relays / Spec Towns Invitational - April 10-12, 2014 Kelli Smith wrapped up action for UAB at the Tennessee Relays in the long jump, finishing 12th after a leap of 5.54 meters (18-2 ¼). Shelby Barker competed in Georgia’s heptathlon and picked up a 10th place finish with a score of 4774. She ran the 100-meter hurdles in 15.10 seconds and recorded a 1.56-meter (5-1 ¼) high jump. She finished with an 8.86-meter (29-1) performance in shot put and ran the 200-meter run in 25.47 seconds. She finished with a 5.47-meter long jump, 28.52-meter javelin throw and 2:20.38 run in the 800-meter race. Jenna Wesley was the UAB competitor in the 800-meter run and finished seventh after a run of 2:17.16.

Mt. SAC Relays / War Eagle Invite - April 18-19, 2014 Running in one of the top track and field meets in the country, UAB’s Elinor Kirk shattered her own 5,000-meter school record by more than 17 seconds, turning in another impressive performance at the Mt. SAC Relays. Kirk became the No. 8 all-time collegiate 10,000 athlete with a record run at the Stanford Invitational, registered another record time as she clocked a 15:42.13 in the 5.000-Meter Run Invitational Elite event at the Mt. SAC meet. UAB’s 4x100m relay team of Kyana White, Shakima Knox, Angel Watson and Kandiss Briggs ran to a season-best 45.99 to finish fourth in the event.
Mississippi State Invite - May 3, 2014 Elinor Kirk picked up a win in the mile run and Neal Tisher broke UAB’s record in pole vault, to lead the No. 39 UAB track and field team to completion at the Jace Lacoste Invitational hosted by Mississippi State. Tisher highlighted the event, breaking the UAB outdoor record in pole vault (which took place Friday night) with a 4.10m (13-5 ¼) performance, besting her old record of 4.07m. Kirk ran in two races on the day, placing fourth in the 800m after a time of 2:10.25. She picked up UAB’s only win, dominating the mile run with a time of 4:40.03.
C-USA Outdoor Championships - May 15-18, 2014 UAB track and field athletes Elinor Kirk and Neal Tisher combined for victories in three events - all in record-breaking fashion - to highlight the Blazers’ performances on the final day of competition at the 2014 Conference USA Outdoor Championships. Kirk, who has had a remarkable year with a combined six conference cross country and track titles, won a pair of races Sunday and achieved both in record times. Kirk captured first in the 1,500-meter run and two hours later, claimed the 5,000-meter run to become the first C-USA athlete to double in those events since 2005.
NCAA East Preliminary Meet - May 29-31, 2014 UAB’s Elinor Kirk, who already punched her ticket to the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Ore., after the 10,000-meter run, secured her spot in the 5K at the championship meet after capping off competition at the NCAA East Preliminary meet. “Today’s first priority objective was to advance to Eugene and the other bonus objective was to win convincingly,” assistant coach Tony Houchin said. “We were lucky that we were able to do both. It has been so fun to have such a special student-athlete like Eli on the team and we get to have two more races with her.”
Just two days after going toe-to-toe in the NCAA 10,000-meter championships to finish second and pick up first-team All-America honors, UAB’s Elinor Kirk ran another sub-16 minute time in the 5,000-meter championship to finish seventh and become a two-event All-American at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. “What an incredible weekend for UAB Track & Field,” assistant coach Tony Houchin said. “To finish 22nd as a team is truly amazing.” The Swansea, Wales native ran a 15:57.96 on Saturday to finish seventh and claim her second firstteam All-America honor of the NCAA Championships.

R
ay L. Watts, M.D., UAB’s seventh president, has demonstrated visionary leadership in education, research and clinical care throughout his career.
Dr. Ray Watts
A Birmingham native and graduate of West End High School, Dr. Watts earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering at UAB in 1976. The collaborations he had with biomedical engineering students as an undergraduate inspired him to expand his career horizons and, four years later, he graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis as valedictorian of his class. Dr. Watts completed a neurology residency, medical internship, and clinical fellowships at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a two-year medical staff fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. Before returning to UAB in 2003, he was part of a team that helped to create an internationally renowned research and clinical center for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders at Emory University in Atlanta. At UAB, Dr. Watts served as the John N. Whitaker Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology. There he led the development of an interdisciplinary research program aimed at translating scientific breakthroughs into promising new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases and played a key role in the establishment of the UAB Comprehensive Neuroscience Center. He also was named president of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation.
Dr. Ray Watts
In 2010, Dr. Watts accepted the position of Senior Vice President and Dean of the School of Medicine at UAB, and later was named to the James C. Lee Jr. Endowed Chair. As dean, Dr. Watts – in partnership with UAB Health System and Health Services Foundation leaders – initiated the AMC21 comprehensive strategic plan, encompassing education, research, clinical care and primary care. AMC21 aims to make UAB “the preferred academic medical center of the 21st century,” and has led to the recruitment of outstanding faculty, the launch of programs to accelerate research and drug discovery, and the development of a third regional medical campus in Montgomery, among other successes. He has been tireless in his efforts to enhance medical student training— from increasing available scholarships to supporting Equal Access Birmingham, a volunteer organization in which students provide care to underserved patients—and to foster stronger relationships with medical alumni throughout the state. “People want to invest in the future—in solutions that will have a real impact on our health, education and our economy,” Dr. Watts has said. “So the state and community want us to develop our ideas and capitalize on opportunities to lead. UAB can be one of the most dymanic and productive universities of the 21st century, and that is our vision.” Dr. Watts and his wife Nancy, who just retired as a nurse at UAB, have five grown children.

hannon James Ealy, a veteran athletics administrator who has held a variety of senior leadership positions in UAB Athletics the past seven years, has been named Interim Director of Athletics at UAB.
For the past five years, Ealy has managed the day-to-day operations of the athletics department and served as second in command for the Blazers’ athletic program. Ealy joined the UAB athletics staff in the fall of 2007 as Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs and in 2009, he also assumed responsibilities for Internal Operations. Ealy has held the title of Senior Associate AD for Internal Operations since 2013. Most recently, Ealy has had oversight for several sports (football, men’s basketball, baseball and softball), as well as a number of individual department units (business operations, academics, facilities and operations, sports medicine, strength and conditioning and equipment operations). While overseeing external affairs, he managed the offices of Blazer Boosters, marketing, media relations, ticket operations and IMG. The only area Ealy has not overseen is compliance, which has been a direct report to the athletic director’s office in the past. Ealy was involved extensively in the search process for recent head coaching hires Bill Clark, Jerod Haase and Garrick McGee. Ealy crafted UAB’s successful bid to host the 2015 Conference USA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships which will be held in Birmingham in March.

Other duties for Ealy since he arrived at UAB have been serving as the liaison to agreements to Nike, LRG and Fanatics. He has served as the point of contact for the Athletic Facilities Master Plan and coordinated facility projects and improvements that have included: football and men’s basketball locker rooms, softball facility, baseball and softball hitting facilities, sand volleyball courts, and video boards at Bartow Arena, Young Memorial Field and UAB Softball Field. Ealy has played a major role in the creation and adherence of the athletic department’s $30 million budget. Ealy has an extensive background in athletics, including event planning and management. Prior to coming to UAB, Ealy served as an executive at Bruno Event Team under the leadership of Ronnie Bruno and Gene Hallman. While with the Bruno organization, Ealy held a role of President of Birmingham Sports Ventures (20042007), where he coordinated and evaluated strategic planning, feasibility studies and funding models for downtown Birmingham multi-purpose dome stadium. He also served as Vice President of Alabama Sports Foundation (2000-2007), where he managed and promoted marquee events such as the SEC Baseball Tournament, SEC Gymnastics Championship, NCAA Basketball Championships, Magic City Classic, U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and U.S. Soccer matches. From 1996-2000, Ealy worked at the Southeastern Conference office where he served as Director of Championships, Marketing and Operations. While at the SEC, managed ticket operations and assisted with event management and marketing for the SEC Football Championship game, SEC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments, as well as the SEC Baseball and Softball Tournaments. Ealy spent one year at the University of Florida as a marketing assistant for various Gator sports, such as football, baseball, gymnastics and soccer. Ealy began his career in athletics administration at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, as Assistant to the Athletic Director and coordinated marketing and event management efforts for home contests.
Ealy earned his Masters of Sports Administration degree from Ohio University in 1995. He received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration in 1991 from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where he was a football student-athlete. Ealy is married to the former Carolyn Wall of Birmingham. They have three children: Brian, Caitlin and Alyssa.

Shannon Ealy
Bill Clark, who came in January as UAB’s head football coach, said, “I have the utmost respect for Shannon Ealy as a collegiate athletics administrator. He played an instrumental role in our success this year. He has a successful future in front of him and possesses good leadership qualities. He will do a great job in this new role of Interim Athletic Director.”

Academic Services A
Academics
ssociate Athletic Director for Student Services Jeff Guin oversees a director, coordinator, four full-time advisors and two learning specialists at the Don M. & Marsha Hoke Hire Student-Athlete Academic Center. Their mission is to provide the highest quality of academic support, counseling and guidance to UAB student-athletes by promoting academic excellence, self-responsibility, personal and professional growth. Guin and his staff act as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches and UAB’s academic communities and ensure that student-athletes comply with academic rules established by the university, the NCAA and Conference USA. UAB’s Student Services program strives to ensure student-athletes succeed to their highest academic ability. Inherent in the program is the philosophy that student-athletes take responsibility for their own growth and development while receiving maximum support. The academic unit’s goals are to prepare student-athletes for viable careers, to assist them in securing degrees and to produce responsible citizens. The athletic advisors, in conjunction with spe-
cific major advisors, work with student-athletes on a regular basis on necessary requirements for their chosen degree. The advisors also help plan class schedules, keeping in mind academic standing, practice, travel and competition schedules. Additionally, the advisors regularly review the performance and class attendance of all student-athletes to help them keep on pace toward graduation. In addition, the NCAA Life Skills program and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) are run through the student services offices. UAB’s commitment to academic excellence got a boost in the summer of 2008 with the completion of the Don M. & Marsha Hoke Hire Student-Athlete Academic Center. Under the direction of athletics director Brian Mackin, and with a generous donation from Don M. & Marsha Hoke Hire, UAB was able to completely renovate the academic center and provide first-class facilities to the Blazers’ student-athletes.

SINCE BECOMING an autonomous campus of The University of Alabama System in 1969, UAB has earned international renown for its innovative academic programs in a range of disciplines, groundbreaking research and leading-edge patient care. The University comprises 10 schools (Business, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry and Public Health and a College of Arts and Sciences) and has seen record enrollment for five consecutive years, reaching 18,568 in 2013. Students are 26% African-American, 60% female and represent more than 100 countries, contributing to campus consistently recognized among the nation’s most diverse in The Princeton Review.
Academic programs at all levels are nationally recognized for their exceptional research and service learning opportunities. Undergraduate programs offer the type of hands-on, closely mentored research experiences found primarily at the graduate level in most universities, such as Alabama’s only undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, a program in the neurosciences conducted jointly with the School of Medicine, and new majors in Biomedical Sciences, Public Health and Informatics. U.S. News & World Report 2015 “Best Graduate Schools” lists 12 UAB programs in the top 25 and The Scientist “Best Places to Work as a Postdoc” ranks UAB first among all U.S. universities. Driven by an intensely collaborative and entrepreneurial character, UAB’s robust research enterprise ranks 23rd in funding from National Institutes of Health (11th among public universities), with more than $454 million in external funding. This wide-ranging research spans the continents in scope: Developing revolutionary treatments for the most devastating human diseases, from cancer to AIDS to Parkinson’s; using satellite remote sensing to reveal lost settlements in Egypt and the Roman Empire (as featured on BBC and Discovery Channel); pioneering new materials for everything from stronger military gear to bio-coatings for cardiac stents; and combating global cybercrime in a one-of-a-kind cyber forensics center, collaborating with the FBI, Homeland Security and industry partners.
UAB drives the region’s economy with a statewide impact exceeding $5 billion annually. As Alabama’s largest single employer (over 23,000 employees), UAB supports more than 61,000 jobs state-wide—one of every 33 Alabama jobs. The Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship has generated some $64 million in revenues and spun off more than 58 start-up companies, and Innovation Depot—in which UAB is a founding partner—is the largest business incubator in the Southeast, with 95 companies and a $1 billion economic impact over the past four years. As a leading academic medical center, UAB also translates its research into the highest quality patient care, treating more than a million patients annually. UAB Hospital (with 1,157 beds), the largest in Alabama and 3rd largest public hospital in the U.S., houses the state’s only level 1 adult trauma center, and is the only Alabama hospital to be listed in every annual issue of U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Hospitals” (24 straight years). The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated center in Alabama and a six-state region, and houses a state-of-the-art Advanced Imaging Facility and the most powerful cyclotron at any U.S. academic medical center. UAB also promotes the cultural and artistic vitality of its community and state. The Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts had total attendance of more than 104,000 in 2013 and is the anchor of a burgeoning Cultural Arts Corridor, which was recently expanded with the opening of the Abroms-Engel Institute for Visual Arts.
UAB’S DECADES-LONG PARTNERSHIP with its community and state has led to the economic, cultural and social renaissance of Birmingham, as the city has grown from a primarily steel-based economy to a thriving nexus of R&D, medicine, banking and other service industries. That partnership continues as UAB garners overwhelming support for its largest philanthropic campaign ever, the $1 billion Campaign for UAB: Give Something, Change Everything. As of March 2014, nearly 71,000 donors had given $473.4 million to this campaign that will dramatically advance UAB’s mission and transform the future of Birmingham and Alabama.

Conference USA Conference USA celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2014-15, welcoming newcomer Western Kentucky University into the fold on July 1. The league has transformed through its two decades, but the commitment to excellence, integrity, leadership and its student athletes in athletics, academics and community is unwavering. Conference USA enjoys a far-reaching fan base with its 14 members: Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP, UTSA and WKU. Since beginning competition in 1995, Conference USA teams have combined for 83 bowl appearances in football, 100 NCAA Tournament appearances in basketball including three Final Fours, 60 NCAA baseball appearances including six College World Series berths, 71 NCAA soccer tournament appearances including four trips to the College Cup, and 35 individual national champions in track and field and cross country. Success is not limited to athletic achievement, however, as 186 Conference USA student-athletes have garnered Academic All-America honors, 651 have achieved academic all-district laurels and thousands of student-athletes have earned their college degrees. Conference USA sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 10 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball). C-USA annually awards $4,000 postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Awards, Scholar-Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. Additionally, Conference USA presents a Spirit of Service Award three times each year, recognizing student-athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom and give back to the community through significant service efforts and participation. SUCCESS ON THE PLAYING FIELD Conference USA performers have achieved great success in competition, placing the league among the top conferences in the nation. In addition to the numerous NCAA Tournament berths, C-USA has sent four men’s soccer teams to the NCAA College Cup, three softball teams to the Women’s College World Series and three volleyball teams to the NCAA Sweet 16. The league has also had 35 national champions in NCAA track and field competition, one national champion in diving, and numerous NCAA individual and team competitors in cross country, golf, swimming, tennis, and track and field. Overall, Conference USA teams and individuals have made more than 800 NCAA appearances. SUCCESS OFF THE FIELD C-USA institutions are among the nation’s best in academic performance of student-athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. Among C-USA’s 5,000 student-athletes, there are champions off the playing field as well. In 19 years, more than 28,000 student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll or received the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA DIGITAL NETWORK The C-USA Digital Network officially launched in August of 2011. Network programming includes live streaming of non-televised events, video on demand, a weekly C-USA studio show, podcasting, regular-season and championship event highlights, and conference-produced feature stories. In its first year, 1,164 events were streamed live and 8,126 videos were posted and available on the C-USA Digital Network, and those numbers have more than doubled. Monthly and yearly subscriptions provide fans access to events offered on all of the C-USA member institution’s athletic websites as well as C-USA network programming.
The league’s headquarters were established in Chicago and, after nine years, relocated to the current office in Irving, Texas. Britton Banowsky was named Commissioner in October 2002, succeeding Mike Slive, the league’s first commissioner. C-USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United States Military Academy (March, 1997) as football members. ECU began league competition in 1997; Army in 1998 and UAB began football play in 1999. The league added TCU and ECU (1999) for all sports and they began competition in 2001. USF started C-USA football in 2003. Marshall, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, UCF and UTEP became full-time Conference USA members for all sports in 2005. In 2013, charter member Charlotte returned to C-USA and was joined by new members FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion and UTSA. The membership is at 14 institutions with WKU joining the league on July 1, 2014.
