2015 VOLLEYBALL
2014 Blazers Outlook Coming off a tough 2014 campaign, which saw an 8-24 overall record, head coach Kerry Messersmith looks to return the UAB volleyball program to it’s winning ways in the 2015 season.
Junior Amber Treace returns after appearing in 94 sets during the 2014 season.
Messersmith is tasked with assessing a team made up of mostly newcomers early in preseason to see where they stand prior to the opening at the Lamar University Tournament, Aug. 28-29. This year’s squad has eight of 18 players on the roster returning with playing experience at UAB. The Blazers will return four of their seven starters from last season, including at the libero position. “We are excited to get started,” Messersmith said. “We have a challenge this season, we have 18 kids which can be a really good thing or can be tough because they may not get the number of reps that they would if we only had 12. On the up side, we have a lot of competition at every position, which we haven’t necessarily had here in the past.”
Along with Treace and Moreno, Messersmith added Conner to the mix. Conner played junior college volleyball at Daytona State College where she ranked set the school record for assists and assists per set.
UAB hopes to benefit from a schedule that will put the team in front of its home crowd for 17 of the 32 matches in 2015. The Blazers will also host two home tournaments in the month of September before getting into Conference USA play.
“We brought in a junior college transfer, Caitlin Conner. Of all three, she probably has the most experience because she started as a freshman and sophomore at her previous school. I think she played a high-level junior college type of volleyball. She has come in and impressed us in the first two days. She does a lot of athletic things.”
“We have an interesting schedule,” Messersmith remarked. “We are very fortunate that we get to have 17 home matches, which is a huge plus for us especially with a team that is kind of unknown and it is just nice to stay home and play in front of your home crowd.”
MIDDLE BLOCKERS Amy Hunter, Jr. | Zahria Richard, R-Fr. | Emily Rudolph, Fr. Kassidy Sullivan, Jr. | Victoria Young, R-Fr.
This season will present some early challenges with three C-USA matches in the early portion of the season. UAB will also compete in two road-tournaments along with its two at home. “We scheduled a certain way on purpose and feel like if all goes well, we should end our preseason on a positive note going into the remainder of our conference season. Our conference is extremely competitive. We just hope we are competitive in our conference and feel like we are going to get better and better throughout the season. Our few two days have been really surprising to all of us and we are excited about the future and for our season. We feel like we may surprise ourselves.” The following is a position-by-position breakdown of the 2015 UAB volleyball roster. SETTERS Caitlin Conner, Jr. | Gabbi Moreno, So. | Amber Treace, Jr. UAB will return two players at setter, both seeing time in 2014, as well as bringing in a junior college transfer. All three players will challenge for the starting position as each bring different levels of experience. Amber Treace and Gabbi Moreno come back after splitting time in 2014. Treace appeared in 94 sets and totaled 784 assists (8.34/set), while Moreno played in 69 sets and dished out 331 assists (4.80/set). “We have three kids vying for spot. Two returning, Amber Treace and Gabbi Moreno. Both Amber and Gabbi are much better players than they were a year ago. Gabbi played in the sand all spring and that helped a lot of her game. She is just a better all-around player.” “Amber played inside in the spring and then played some sand. I think she made a lot of progress, we worked with her individually and made strides with her strength and decision making.”

The middle blocker position will feature all newcomers for the Blazers, as the team will have to replace three players that graduated from teh 2014 team. The group will have to fill the role left by Sara Rishell, a All-C-USA Second Team selection both years as a Blazer. “We have a lot of competition at middle. Victoria Young and Zahria Richard come back after taking redshirts last season. Then we have all newcomers, Emily Rudolph is a freshman, Cassidy Sullivan a junior college transfer. Amy Hunter we are still working on where to put her but she is someone we can use in the middle.” “I think athletically we are probably better than we ever have been. They may not be quite as big, but are better athletes than we have had in the past. Victoria made huge progress in the spring. We are going to expect big things from her going forward. She came along offensively when Rashinda joined the staff in the spring. She is till learning the game as we go through the preseason but we expect big things. Young helped her high school squad to the Final Four in her junior and senior season. Along with Young, Richard will see time after taking a redshirt. Richard was an all-conference and all-regional player in high school. “Zahria made huge progress over the spring in every area. She is probably one of the smartest players we have. She has great touch on the ball and is a nice, controlled athlete. She lacks height, but is still a nice player in the middle and will compete for a spot.” Messersmith will have three newcomers just joining the roster, but two will bring previous college playing experience. Kassidy Sullivan, is a junior college transfer from Iowa Western CC where fellow Blazer Sydney Nelson played. Sullivan helped the team to a 45-2 finish in 2014, which was the most wins in program history. Amy Hunter comes in after transferring from Albany University. Hunter, who hails from Tauranga, New Zealand where former Blazer Kiriana Hirini was also from, played two seasons with Albany.

2015 VOLLEYBALL
2014 Blazers Outlook “Amy is a big, strong player that hits a heavy ball. We could almost put her anywhere. She will be one of our better attackers and she has decent ball control so she could hold her own in the back row. The thing we love so much about her is her size. She is our biggest player.” Emily Rudolph joins the team as a freshman. Rudolph played at Marquette High School, where she earned all-district and all-state honors as a senior. “Emily may be the better athlete of the group. She has come in as a freshman and really impressed us right off the bat. She picks things up quickly, just not a lot of game experience so learning as we go along, but she will be a very good volleyball player.” RIGHT SIDE HITTERS Sydney Nelson, Sr. UAB’s lone returner from the right side is senior Sydney Nelson. Nelson was fourth on the team last season with 222 kills (2.20/set). She also recorded 57 blocks in her first year with UAB.
“Ashlyn is coming off of surgery. She hasn’t been hitting long, it has been a short time that she was released to swing so she will steadily improve. She focused on her passing and back row defense in the spring and made a lot of progress there.” The lone newcomer among the outside hitters will be freshman Jillian Tinglin. Tinglin is a local from Montgomery, Ala. A two-time Montgomery Advertiser AHSAA Player of the Year, she helped lead her team to a 2A AHSAA State Championship in 2013. “Jillian is a newcomer. She has probably surprised me more than anyone. She really has a nice wrist, has great ball control, can get up and swing hard. She lacks a little bit in size, but adds a lot to what we are trying to do.” DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS/LIBERO Autumn Hiett, Fr. | Sydney Hinds, Fr. | Emily Martinez, Fr. Emma Schroer, Sr. | Baley West, So.
“Sydney is someone we didn’t think we would have at all this year. They told us we would be looking at probably the end of October for her to return and she has been released by the doctor and is actually swinging already and doing quite well.”
UAB will have two players back in the defensive specialist position, including Emma Schroer who took over at libero at the end of the 2014 season.
“Sydney is one of our bigger, more powerful kids and that certainly changes things for us as a coaching staff because we were not counting on her at all this year so to probably have her back really makes a difference. Especially up front blocking, she is a nice big block and does some nice things.”
Schroer stepped in as the Blazers struggled to find consistency in the defense last season. She played in 107 sets, finishing with 281 digs.
OUTSIDE HITTERS Gabby Deshotel, Jr. | Haley Jared, So. Ashlyn Sunseri, Jr. | Jillian Tinglin, Fr.
“We expect big things out of Emma. She took over the libero position at the end of the year last year and really did a nice job for us. She has done nothing but improve.”
Four players will be battling at the outside hitter position, where the Blazers see three players returning along with one newcomer. The Blazers’ top returner will be junior Gabby Deshotel, who led the team in 2014 with 319 kills. Deshotel appeared in 113 sets, third-most on the team. She also led the team with 18 service aces and added 45 blocks and 91 digs.
Baley West also returns after playing in 40 sets with 51 digs in 2014. West is recovergin from ACL surgery that kept her out most of the spring.
Senior Emma Schroer moved into the libero position at the end of the 2014 season.
Messersmith focused on recruiting strong passers and defenders to bring to the roster. She added three newcomers at the position, all freshmen. Emily Martinez, a two-time all-state selection, Sydney Hinds, a two-time first team all-conference selection and Autumn Hiett, who hails from Pelham, Ala.
Junior Gabby Deshotel led UAB with 319 kills in 2014. Along with Deshotel, sophomore Haley Jared and junior Ashlyn Sunseri will return for the Blazers. Both Jared and Sunseri saw playing time in 2014. Jared appeared in 70 sets with 17 kills and added 73 digs. Sunseri played in 23 sets. “Haley has also made huge progress, she was another one that was able to play sand for us in the spring. Playing sand really helped her a lot in the rest of her game. She is a nice athlete that has great control. She is just a worker and fierce competitor”

“Emily is an undersized outside hitter that we were lucky to get. She is a nice athlete, very smart kid, hard worker, coachable. Her competitive attitude is probably the best thing she has going for her. Sydney Hinds is another one that will see some playing time. She is coachable, works hard. Autumn Hiett has surprised everybody so far. She does a nice job and is very controlled. She is in the right place at the right time.” “This group of kids have come in from the first day and really worked hard. I think we have five good defensive players so not sure who we will put out there, and that is not the position we were in last year. We struggled with our passing and defense so we are hoping that will not be the case this year. We purposely went out and got a large group and why we have 18 kids.”

Kerry Messersmith
Head Coach | 10th Season Chadron State, 1986
Entering her 10th season at the helm of the UAB program, Kerry Messersmith has showcased continued success in leading the Blazers, evident by four 23-plus win seasons and a streak of seven straight seasons finishing .500 or better in Conference USA action. Messersmith will look to return the Blazers their usual success after a tough 2014 season, which saw a young UAB team finish 8-24 overall and 2-14 in C-USA. The highlight came from Sara Rishell, who competed with the US Collegiate National Team in the summer before earning All-C-USA Second Team honors. The 2013 season saw continued sucess for the UAB volleyball program under Messersmith. She guided the team to an overall record of 21-14 and a 7-7 mark in Conference USA, marking the third consecutive season of 20 or more wins for the Blazers.
The Messersmith File
During that season, four players were selected to the All-C-USA team and Rachel Fairbanks was named C-USA Libero of the Year with Messersmith’s guidance. It was the first Libero of the Year award for any UAB player.

In 2011, the Blazers were yet again one of the top programs in the league, finishing second in the standings at 23-9 overall and 13-7 against C-USA foes as Messersmith earned the C-USA Co-Coach of the Year award for the first time leading the Blazers. The 13 victories in conference action tied Messersmith’s 2008 squad for the most in program history and the Green and Gold also recorded a 13-match win streak last season, the second longest in UAB lore. Messersmith reached a legendary milestone during the 2011 campaign, earning her 600th career coaching victory when UAB defeated Rice, 3-1, on October 23 at Bartow Arena. Entering her 25th season on the sidelines, Messersmith boasts a career record of 605-324 (.651). In the two seasons prior to Messersmith’s arrival in 2006, the Blazers were a combined 15-37, including a 1-24 campaign in 2004. The program had never won a Conference USA Championship and had never earned a berth in the NCAA tournament. In the six seasons since she set foot in Birmingham, UAB has made three appearances in the C-USA Championship finals, competed in two NCAA tournaments and posted an overall record of 131-72 (67-37 C-USA). Messersmith’s .645 winning percentage at the school is the highest in program history. The Blazers posted two AVCA All-Midwest Region selections in Sam Serley (first team) and Heather Thomas (honorable mention) during the 2011 campaign. Serley and Thomas were also recognized by the conference, earning first and second team honors, respectively. In addition, six times a player won C-USA Player of the Week accolades, five coming on defense. Messersmith has guided numerous players to notch a spot in several statistics in the UAB record book. Most recently, Thomas, a 2012 graduate, set both the single season (631) and career (2,131) records for digs and finished fourth alltime in C-USA last season. Her inaugural UAB squad made an immediate breakthrough in 2006, winning the program’s first C-USA Championship and advancing to its first NCAA tournament. The team’s 27 wins were the most by a Blazer squad since 1991. Messersmith earned her 500th career win in the 2006 conference tournament semifinals, and another victory the next day sealed an NCAA trip. The Blazers lost in the first round to fourth-ranked UCLA, but they would be back. Following a 24-win campaign in 2007 and a conference tournament runner-up finish that left the team just shy of another postseason berth, UAB posted its best season ever in 2008. At 27-8, the 2008 UAB squad set a program record for winning percentage (.771) and won a school-record 16 straight matches. The Blazers finished second in the C-USA standings at 13-3 and advanced to the league tournament finals for the third consecutive year under Messersmith, losing a hard-fought five-setter to top-seeded Tulane. But UAB was rewarded for its strong regular season with an NCAA tournament at-large berth and a trip to Lincoln,

Coaching Staff Neb. The Blazers swept Missouri State, 3-0, on Dec. 5 for the first NCAA tourney win in program history before falling in the second round to No. 4 overall seed Nebraska on the Huskers’ home floor at the historic NU Coliseum. UAB finished the year at No. 22 in the final RPI. The 2008 team was led by a pair of AVCA honorable mention All-Americans in Ivana Bozic (for the second time) and Nevena Stefanov, who was also the C-USA Setter of the Year. Three seasons later in 2011, Sam Serley (another two-time selection) became Messersmith’s fifth Blazer All-American, while the coach has also tutored eight all-region selections and 11 allconference players at UAB. Serley (2010) and current assistant coach Casey Dent (three times; 2006-2008) also earned Academic All-District honors under Messersmith’s guidance. In 2009, Messersmith coached C-USA Newcomer of the Year Michelle Uzoh and All-Freshman team member Serley, who went on to earn second-team all-league honors in 2010. Messersmith led UAB to another winning season in 2009 with a 17-16 overall record and a 9-7 mark in league play. Her 2010 team went 13-19 but closed with wins in its final five matches and eight of its last 11 to post a 10-10 league mark and finish in the top half of the C-USA standings for the fifth consecutive season, every year of her tenure. UAB’s 13-7 mark in league in 2011 extended that streak to six straight years. Her achievements at UAB are the latest in a long line of coaching successes and program turnarounds. Messersmith owns an overall coaching record of 605324 (.651), and she took over at UAB with a proven track record of resurrecting collegiate volleyball programs. Coming to the Blazers from Georgia Southern in December of 2005, Messersmith was the Eagles’ all-time winningest coach in her tenure at the Statesboro, Ga., school. She turned around a program that was 15-45 in the two seasons prior to her arrival in 2001. The Casper, Wyo., native compiled an overall record of 116-52 at GSU and was 75-17 in Southern Conference matches. Under Messersmith, the Eagles finished 21-11 and were 14-6 in SoCon play in 2001, her first season at GSU. That effort came only a year after Georgia Southern was 11-19 overall and just
5-15 in league action. For the 2002 and 2003 seasons, the Eagles were a combined 53-18 overall and 35-3 in conference matches. GSU won Southern Conference tournament titles and earned NCAA tournament berths in 2001 and 2003, while also capturing the league’s regular season title in both 2002 and 2003. Messersmith, who earned Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors during her time at GSU, coached four players to eight first-team all-conference accolades in her five seasons with the Eagles. Four other GSU players earned second-team all-league honors during her tenure. Her success at Georgia Southern was just another example of a program demonstrating a dramatic turnaround under her leadership. In fact, in her 23-year career as a head coach, she has guided six teams to substantial resurgences. Prior to taking over the Eagles’ program at GSU, Messersmith spent four seasons at Arizona Western College, where she took a program that won just four matches the season before she arrived to an eighthplace finish at the NJCAA National Tournament four years later in 2000. The Matadors finished 15-23 during her first season but then improved to 33-19 in 1998. The success would continue over the next two seasons as Arizona Western finished 38-13 in 1999 and 43-10 in Messersmith’s final year there. Before her stint at Arizona Western, Messersmith coached for two years at her alma mater, Chadron State. She guided the school to a combined record of 46-29 over the 1994 and 1995 seasons. Messersmith also helped lead huge turnarounds as head coach at Allen County (Kan.) Community College, Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College and Pittsburg State University. Her coaching career began at Allen County CC in 1987. During her two seasons there, she compiled a mark of 61-23 and led the program to its first conference championship. Messersmith is a 1986 graduate of Chadron State, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education. Messersmith and her late husband, Hal, have two daughters, Meghan and Brynnley, and reside in Vestavia Hills, Ala.

Bartow Arena
Bartow Arena serves as the UAB volleyball team’s home court. Formerly UAB Arena, the home facility for the Blazers was later renamed to honor former athletics director and head basketball coach Gene Bartow. The UAB volleyball team is now in its 24th season at the venue. Since becoming the first team to host intercollegiate athletic competition in the arena in 1988, UAB volleyball has hosted a number of tournaments, including the 1988 Sun Belt Conference Championship and the first Women’s Invitational Volleyball Championship in 1989. In 1993, UAB hosted the third Great Midwest Conference Championship. Bartow Arena is a multi-purpose facility that is used for intercollegiate athletic events, as well as numerous other activities and events hosted by the university. The arena is home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams and UAB graduation ceremonies. With 18,000-square feet of floor space, the arena has a permanent wood floor, which has three basketball courts, three volleyball courts and a portable hardwood floor for basketball. There are a total of 8,500 seats (6,500 permanent, 2,000
retractable), and there is a maximum capacity of 9,500. In addition, the arena houses athletic and administrative offices, locker rooms, the Green and Gold Room, the Blazer Club and the Champion Club. In 2009, the arena added new scoreboards at each end and a new, four-panel, video board above mid-court. In 2011, the lower bowl of seats was replaced. Additional changes to the building over the years have included a renovation of the administrative towers annex, a new locker room and equipment room for football and a renovation of the Green and Gold, Blazer Club and Champions Club rooms. Specifically related to volleyball, the arena’s 15 foot by 26 foot locker room was renovated in the summer of 2007. With the upgrade came brand new spacious lockers for each student-athlete, leather couches and a 50-inch flat-screen plasma television. The UAB volleyball program’s all-time record in Bartow Arena entering 2012 stands at 166-107 (.608).

Total Attempts
Tammy Robertson
During her four-year stint at UAB (198992), Tammy Robertson started in all 171 matches and played all but two of 622 games, becoming the UAB career leader in assists (6,650) and attack percentage (.389). Entering the 1992 season 16th among the all-time national career assist leaders, Robertson was the top returning player in the nation with 5,066. She needed 1,530 for the record. Robertson broke the national record (formerly held by Michelle Jaworski of Penn State since 1989 at 6,596) during a postseason match against Cornell at the Women’s Invitational Volleyball Championship. Recording 64 assists during the match, Robertson surpassed the record at 6,615. In a subsequent match, she increased her total to 6,650 career assists, making her No. 1 in NCAA history. Robertson led UAB to a 113-58 record, three conference championships and four bids to the WIVC during her career. She twice led the conference (Sun Belt in 1990 and Great Midwest in 1992) in assist average. She finished second in the Sun Belt as a freshman (1989) and in the Great Midwest as a junior (1991). In 1989, Robertson became the first freshman in the history of the Sun Belt Conference to earn first-team all-conference honors. She repeated first-team recognition as a sophomore as she set UAB’s single-match mark for assists with 78 in a five-game victory over Tennessee. As a junior, Robertson set the singleseason record for assists at UAB with 1,763. Robertson graduated magna cum laude, earning her undergraduate degree in early childhood education in June 1992. She earned conference academic recognition in each of her four years, as well.

Patti Schroder
Following her successful two-year career at UAB, former volleyball great Patti Schroder was honored by having her No. 4 jersey retired. Schroder is one of the most decorated players, both athletically and academically, in the history of the Blazer volleyball program. More than two decades after her playing career ended, she still ranks sixth all-time at UAB with 2,480 assists in just two seasons (1985-86). Her 1985 season totals of 95 aces and 1,496 assists rank third and seventh, respectively, in the Blazer record book. Schroder was an All-Sun Belt Conference performer in both 1985 and 1986 and topped that by twice being named the Sun Belt Female Athlete of the Year. Her strong performance on the court combined with her high marks in the classroom earned her a spot on the Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll in both of her years at UAB. Even more impressively, Schroder was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team in 1986. To date, she remains one of two UAB volleyball players ever to earn Academic AllAmerica recognition.
