ENTREPRENEUR 4 UAE OF THE MONTH
SABIHA
Photography: Angelina Verghese
Sabiha is a multi-talented and multifaceted creative professional and entrepreneur. She has produced and acted in numerous theatrical plays in Dubai and runs an Events Management and Real Estate company. Her interview reveals her grit, determination and never-say-die attitude, leading to her growth and transformation. She was awarded a Golden Visa two years ago for contributing to the UAE Creative Arts community Website: https://www.orbeventsuae.com Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ sabiha-majgaonkar605-a9a8/
UAE ENTREPRENEUR 4 OF THE MONTH We believe in supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs. We welcome you to tell us your story and we’d love to feature you, just contact us at features@uaecreatives.com. How did you begin your entrepreneurial journey? Post Covid when I lost my job, I decided to start my own Event Management company, Orb Events, with my friend and now partner Rachel. We are both artists with a collective 35 years of experience in performing arts, particularly theatre, and it was simply a no-brainer for us to start an event management company focused on performing arts. A year ago I also got involved in the real estate business, and currently, I am a partner at Kl Maqan Real Estate. What’ve been your learnings
along the way? Running a company is challenging but also satisfying. Having eighteen plus years of performing arts experience the company helped more in application of the learnings and doing them better than before, each time. Consistency is the key. You’re also into the creative arts. Tell us about your creative journey into a theatre personality. What were the challenges you faced and how did you overcome them? I have always had a creative streak in me. As a child I loved to paint, dance, and write
Photography: Angelina Verghese
UAE ENTREPRENEUR 4 OF THE MONTH poems. Over the years writing poetry remained a consistent force and continues to be my most significant creative outlet, however when I got introduced to theatre in 2004, the addiction Photography: Angelina Verghese was on a different level. I have worked consistently towards building a reputation as an artist for eighteen plus years now with over forty productions to my name as an actor, director and producer. I have curated and Photography: Angelina Verghese managed theatre festivals and competitions, written plays and short stories and have also finished writing my first book this year. Being an introvert and trying to make a space for myself in something that is very people oriented and limelight focused like performing arts, it was tough for me in some ways. I had to break the barriers of
assumptions and judgement, learn everything from scratch and build myself to a level where I was able to pick projects that allowed me to grow further and shine. I think I overcame my challenges by simply refusing to accept someone else’s idea of me and consistently doing what was needed to do to find my own path and build myself. In that sense I would say I am a selfmade artist, although I have been blessed to have come across so many talented people and I learned a lot from them. How do you balance your business and creative pursuits? Since one of my businesses is in the creative field, the question of balancing work and art is hardly there. I do have to find a balance between real estate work and the arts but it’s manageable as art is now second nature to me and requires less focus than the Real Estate work. I mainly spend weekdays focused on real
UAE ENTREPRENEUR 4 OF THE MONTH estate and weekends are mostly dedicated to the arts. I did take a year’s break from all things art (except writing) after my mother’s demise in Oct 2022. But now I am back and raring to go with some projects lined up in 2024. Can you narrate any particular theatre project experience that gave you immense satisfaction? I think all my plays as a director have been immensely satisfying to me, especially the first three full-length plays I directed – “Agnes”, “Carnage” and “Night, Mother”. “Circle Mirror Transformation” was another play that was extremely unique and satisfying to direct. As an actor, I found my roles in the short plays “Last Supper”, “One Night Stan” and the full-length play “Night, Mother” the most satisfying. How do you think the UAE market
has evolved over the years you’ve been here? I have lived in this country for decades, and therefore I can tell with certainty that UAE has evolved tremendously in every area as a country. The market is booming, whether it’s trade, tourism or real estate. Cultural development and the growth of arts in the country, particularly in Dubai, has been immense in the past decade and half. With different options available, including online businesses, Dubai is now a hub for entrepreneurs of all kinds and businesses of all sizes.

5 FEATURED UAE CREATIVE
suchi (Freelance Artist & Illustrator)
Suchi is a UAE based freelance Illustrator and has worked as a Web Creative Director and Designer in the UAE before foraying out as a freelancer working globally. You can learn more about her and her work at: https://www.thelittlebigthings.me/
5 FEATURED UAE CREATIVE Tell us about your journey as a web designer and then illustrator. How did it begin and evolve?
I studied Digital Design at XIC, Mumbai, and have over two decades of experience in the design industry. I started as an e-greetings designer, moved on to UI/UX design at Tata Internet Services in India, and then worked as the Design & Graphics head for a large corporate house in Kuwait. I then became the Creative Director at Cyber Gear, one of the Middle East’s largest web agencies. After freelancing, I discovered my passion for illustration. I am a self-taught illustrator who loves to experiment with Adobe apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, Fresco among other apps. I am drawn to the endless possibilities of the digital
medium, especially illustrations, and not a day goes by when I am not learning something new! I create illustrations for everything from logos and packaging, e-learning modules to vending machines, wall murals and even cakes and cookies! My illustrations are also available for licensing on Shutterstock and Skribbl, among others.
Who do you count as your major inspirations as far as illustration styles go? Well, the list for inspiration is long but some of my favourite Illustrators are Lisa Congdon who has a bold and vibrant illustration style. Andy J Pizza has a whimsical feel to his work, yet with focus on creating meaningful art. Salli Swindell is a food and travel illustrator who I follow on socials - her style is
5 FEATURED UAE CREATIVE casual and with a lot of textures to her digital art. To be honest, I find inspiration in most people who create art and express themselves through their medium. Some styles are immediately eye-catching, while others convey their message subtly but effectively.
What are your favourite fiction/non-fiction books? Which books do you think that aspiring designers or illustrators should read?
Among my favourite nonfiction authors is Khaled Hosseini, whose human stories deeply resonate with me. I’ve also bookmarked Nobuo Suzuki’s Wabi Sabi, as I firmly believe in the beauty of imperfection, which also informs my art style, where colours often stray outside the lines. For illustrators, I recommend the books Find Your Artistic Voice by Lisa Congdon and Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon. Find Your Artistic Voice is a great resource for discovering
your unique style and voice as an illustrator. Steal Like an Artist is a fun and inspiring read that encourages you to learn from other artists and apply their insights to your own work. In addition to books, I also recommend online learning platforms like Skillshare and Masterclass. These platforms offer a wide range of courses on illustration, taught by experienced professionals.
Tell us about your freelance experience in the UAE market? How easy or difficult is it to find clients? Any tips you would love to share with our readers? Freelancing in the UAE requires showcasing your work on social media, networking with potential clients, and having a strong portfolio. Finding clients is not difficult if you have a good amount of networking
5 FEATURED UAE CREATIVE skills, stay up-to-date on market trends and changes. However, in the UAE, most clients prefer to work with ad agencies and established art agencies.
Tips:
4Become a licensed freelancer in the UAE, and open up a world of opportunities to work with clients. 4Keep your portfolio updated on your website, social media, Dribble, and Behance. These sites are popular with clients looking to hire freelancers. 4Showcase a wide range of work and products to demonstrate your versatility and adaptability. 4Add real testimonials from clients and ex-managers to your website and social media. Request client feedback after successfully completing a project. 4Be prompt in responding to client mails and calls. Having a ‘Can do’ attitude works wonders.
What is a typical business day in your life as a freelance illustrator like? My typical business day starts early at 7:30 AM, since I work in different time zones, with a strong cup of coffee and a review of my to-do list. I prioritize client work and strive to deliver on time and on schedule. I often find myself working on feedback in the early evening. In addition to client work, I set aside time to experiment with new styles and techniques, and to catch up with clients on nonwork-related matters. This helps me build strong relationships with my clients.
Do tell us about one of your favourite or interesting projects. How did you craft it - from brief to design to final output? I created over 100 illustrations
5 FEATURED UAE CREATIVE for a challenging and rewarding e-learning module for Teeside University, UK on ‘Senior living in a care home setting, with a focus on the urinary system and its impact on health and well-being’. The illustrations had to be accurate and informative, while also reflecting hope, positivity, and connection. I was mindful of cultural and religious sensitivities, and used colours and fonts that were compatible for users with disabilities. The project was implemented and coordinated entirely online, and I was impressed by the client’s organization and communication. I received
positive feedback and remuneration for my work, and I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of meaningful art that appeals to a variety of sensibilities. I won a long-term repeat client with my professionalism, diligence, and commitment to clarity and scheduling.
What are your other hobbies and interests?
I enjoy listening to podcasts and music for inspiration and relaxation. I also love spending time outdoors and people-watching, which is a surprisingly popular subject of study in the US.
5 FEATURED UAE CREATIVE I like to dabble with watercolours as a break from the digital medium.
What would your advice be for aspiring UAE freelancers?
Advice for aspiring freelancers: 4Build a strong portfolio of your work and showcase it online. Even if you don’t have client work to show, you can create mockups to demonstrate your skills and talent. 4Set realistic timelines and schedules, and get client signoff on emails to ensure clarity on deliverables. 4Don’t undervalue yourself or undersell your services. Clients who value your work will pay the right price for it. 4Never stop learning and growing. Stay up-to-date on trends and client requirements. 4Treat freelancing as a fulltime job. 4Show up on time, take breaks, and enjoy the process!
How do you think Image
Generation AI tools impact the Illustrators market and what strategies can we adopt to cope with these challenges?
Image generation tools are a controversial topic in the creative community, but Adobe’s integration of these tools into its apps is a significant development. The impact on the illustrator market is still to be seen, but I believe that clients will always need human interaction to understand their briefs, revise and edit work, and go the extra mile. This is especially true for small projects where the human element is essential. However, fighting AI is futile. Instead, illustrators should learn to adapt and use technology to their advantage. If AI can simplify tasks and lead to faster output, illustrators should adopt it. This will free up time for them to learn and create better products. www.thelittlebigthings.me

IT 8 THE HELP GUY
cybersecurity Why it is vital to all creative businesses
The Evolution of the Internet: From Academia to Commercial Asset The Internet was once a localized network of computers used by scientists, engineers, and universities to share research findings and other academic works and used lowspeed communications systems. The need to share resources globally with other like-minded academics, the World Wide Web (www) was created and consequently allowed to be commercialized and opened up to every single individual. Today, the Internet is a $2.1 trillion commercial asset. The Ongoing Battle: Cybersecurity Challenges and Threats Today, no business or corporate enterprise is operating without the Internet. It has given endless solutions to almost all problematic operational issues
that can be resolved in just minutes. In science and technology, there are the good and the bad. There will always be silent prowlers who will build schemes to disrupt and destroy the normal smooth operations simply for their entertainment and profit. New Tech is always 100% secure against current cyber threats, but hackers will eventually find routes to infiltrate even the most protected systems. Protecting Your Digital Assets: Essential Security Tips With the advancement of technology, hacking has become even more advanced. Unlike the users, the hackers have the same knowledge as the developers of that technology. They can reverse engineer the system easily and find weak spots that they can quickly infiltrate and take the system hostage.
IT 8 THE HELP GUY 4Ransomware The Ransomware pirates will release your system to the same operating status for a price. You are left with either pay the fee or completely reinstall the system at a cost. It may be attractive to pay the fee rather than painstakingly going through days to bring back your system which may not be the same as before but at the risk of the hackers leaving invisible programs running in the background monitoring the system’s activity and can lock it again for more ransom on a later date. Imagine the valuable data lost such as your clients’ years of ongoing projects,
TIME LEFT:
PAY FOR UNLOCK
creative work, etc. It is a nightmare. In my professional life, I have at least one customer every month who calls to be saved from a
Ransomware attack in addition to cybersecurity issues. 4Stay Alert So, what can you do to protect your privacy and valuable data? A golden rule is to be alert about everything. No, you don’t have to be a schizophrenic to be alert at everything. You are in the Digital Realm where you cannot see the prowler. And, that needs a close watchful eye on your digital asset as a creative business person. 4Easy Tips to Follow Pay close attention to suspicious URLs and Emails. If they look strange, it probably is. It is a good practice to visit only known websites, and websites of well-reputed companies or recommended by trusted professionals. URLs of known companies. Try not to visit websites via search engines unless you know for certainty, they are genuine. Websites with HTTPS are secured. This doesn’t mean that HTTP may not be. Get a qualified and well-
IT 8 THE HELP GUY experienced techie to check out the website before you visit it, if it is important to you. Delete emails that don’t have content or look like they are coming from a spoofed address. I cannot stress enough the importance of guarding personal information. If you are using a local email client disable the auto-preview pane when checking spam. Disable read receipts if you don’t want the sender to know you saw the email because that can be a trigger for the sender to bombard your inbox with spam. Open emails that you receive only from known sources. Do not subscribe to newsletters from unknown sources through websites unless you have had any form of communication with them before this. The Importance of Strong and Frequently Changing Passwords Holding on to the same password for ages isn’t a great idea. Not everyone understands the dangers of that. Hackers write code to decode
passwords no matter the strength of the encryption. When you use systems that are open source, chances are it is a partially open door for hackers. Hacking programs can run for months and years and will finally decode your passwords. If you are security conscious about your privacy, your client’s information, your business secrets, and other private information do not share your password even with your closest relatives. To them, your password may not matter much. They can be careless and type it on a text editing file, or a paper to remember that can be easily accessed by someone else. Frequently changing passwords if you are a business individual is of utmost importance. Make them strong by combining sets of mixed characters such as numbers, uppercase, lowercase
IT 8 THE HELP GUY and allowed symbols, and as lengthy as you can remember. If you are like me who has subscriptions and registrations to over 100 websites, it is going to be tedious to remember all the passwords. One way is to subscribe to a cloud service or run a password manager on your digital device. That way you only need to remember two passwords; the login to your digital device and the cloud service. Privacy and Security: Keeping Browsing Personal It is important to understand why browsing, like shopping and banking tasks, needs to be kept personal to your own digital devices. Keeping an eye on what websites (URLs you type) you visit may lead to others or load something else which is not expected. And, that includes social media portals. Employees in customer service
may not realize that sharing too much on social media, etc. like personally identifiable information is a way hackers can gather intel. Data Backups and Security: Overlooked Essentials for Businesses Not everyone is tech-savvy. Every creative business individual operating a 24/7 cycle prefers to go about their daily operations smoothly and uninterrupted. Backing up their data and the systems regularly and updating security could be something that can go overlooked as project deadlines rule the day. Since this is a job for us IT guys, it is the biggest challenge to get a customer to understand when they need help with these important tasks. Just like big companies are targeted by hackers in my experience even small business individuals are a target too because they do not have any security placed to protect their business. Hackers have their robots surfing the internet to find businesses. Befriend a
IT 8 THE HELP GUY
couple of IT guys. You never know how beneficial it can be to you. In corporate environments, staff generally leave their desks for meetings, gatherings and lunch breaks without locking their computers. This is a chance of an open invitation to your competition to pry on your next project that you hope to climb up that corporate ladder. Neverr leave your digital devices unattended, even for a short period. It only takes a snapshot of your screen to lose all your hard work. You don’t know who is walking by. Imagine you lost your baggage at the train station because you left it to get a daily. Cyber security is important more than ever. Invest in it if you are a creative business individual. It is better to be cautious than regret after losing your valued revenue.

This is how long it could take a creative to understand markets because any capitalistic market is tumultuous on both sides, whether an employer or employee or a supplier or buyer of intangible products or services such as creatives.
Honesty, Assertiveness, Emotional Intelligence Just by exercising vigilance, honesty and assertiveness and emotional intelligence can put a good balance to the success of anyone who embarks into this stormy career journey. And the speed at which one succeeds only depends on the organic build-up of you as an individual.

What is the meaning of success? Is it the money you rake up in your bank account? Is it the financial freedom? Or is it the happiness generated from using your living self on this planet, honestly caring for your next of kin, and any being on this planet and universe irrespective of the species. Or is it that you are Mr Universe or Ms World or the greatest public speaker or motivational speaker? An Example of Silent Resistance I have seen success in a most unlikely circumstance, a distant relative who was born beautiful, fair skin with green eyes, blond hair, but was bullied because of a different look from the person’s dark-skinned peers at school and grew up to be a

Instead of identifying why their child had become a timid introvert, they assumed that the child as only good to help them only in household chores and was quickly married off to an older match double the age-gap and not nearly a good match. Still timid, that worked for the community, this kid who was now an adult got married into but then, silently raised the individual’s kids to be empathetic and kind, something this person did not find in his/her personal life. Not being vengeful at this life’s plight, decided to be successful in such a passive way through raising these offsprings. Silent resistance is to show
