Shakespeare Theatre Workshop All the world’s a stage! Explore your creative side learning and performing Shakespeare with this three-part workshop. The workshop will begin with Shakespeare for Lovers and Haters where members will study classical verse and rhythm in monologues, scenes, and soliloquies. Apply what you learned by performing in a novice version of a reader’s theatre platform. Members will carry a script and have minimal stylized movement. Practice makes perfect, right? Members can rehearse on their own throughout the term. Return November 8th for final rehearsals to prepare for the OLLI at UAH Company performance for family, friends, and fellow members. No prior theatre or performance experience necessary. Members are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing for all classes/ rehearsals, bringing your willingness to learn and your humor. Writing Your Life Story

Each person's life is unique. No one can fully write about you except you. Do you have questions you wish you had asked your grandparents? Writing your life story is a way of providing answers for younger generations, or it can be used to personally reflect on past events. Each session will focus on a different aspect of writing your story, from putting words on paper to publishing. Memory prompts, a list of reference books, and other resources will be provided. Are you interested in understanding more about craft beer? If so, this class is for you as we sample and learn about craft beer. The instructor, a local beer aficionado, will lead you through educational and entertaining classes where you will learn about the different beer styles and get a historical perspective of beer through the ages. Without a Home: Understanding the Homeless Crisis in Huntsville Jennifer Geist, First Stop Executive Director Homelessness is a burgeoning social and economic challenge for many cities across the country today and Huntsville is no exception. OLLI INSTRUCTORS Levi Alexander previously worked in the courtroom on a number of types of cases. Though having a great court record, he focused his attention on estate planning and keeping clients out of the courtroom. He prides himself on ways to prevent a court battle when the inevitable arises. Dr. Connie Atkinson is professor emeritus of the University of New Orleans where she served as Director of the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies and taught courses on the history of New Orleans music and graduate research methods. Dr. Atkinson received her PhD from the Institute of Popular Music, University of Liverpool, England. A music journalist in New Orleans for many years at the Courier, Figaro, and New Orleans Magazine, Dr. Atkinson edited and published Wavelength, New Orleans Music Magazine, from 1980-1992. Elizabeth Aversa is a retired The University of Alabama faculty member. Although her professional career was in library and information science education, she was "raised on opera," and has enjoyed it all her life thanks to her parents. She enjoys operas at venues from the Met to The University of Alabama Opera Theatre. Dan Barron is a retired Aerospace Program Management and Engineering executive from the Boeing Company. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin and a Business Management degree from the University of California in Los Angeles. His career emphasis was on large scale aerospace product development leading the engineering, integration, and testing of space launch vehicles and spacecraft. Richard Brooks holds a Bachelor's in economics and a Master’s in theology. He is currently finishing a Doctorate of Ministry Degree on the topic of new funding sources for housing the homeless. Jennifer Brost is a development officer at UAH. She started crocheting with her grandmother when she was 10 and hasn't put down her hooks. Jennifer enjoys crocheting everyday things for use around the house and to give as gifts. Carolyn Carr is an environmental economist and longtime wildlands activist who has organized wilderness campaigns in Arizona, New Mexico, and Alabama. She has taught many OLLI environmental courses. Dr. William Confer retired from clinical psychology after 38 years of practice. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Professional Psychology and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. His first degree was in English literature and he currently studies etymology as a hobby. Cathy Curry is the Director of Outreach and Education for Huntsville Ballet Company where she teaches all techniques and ages, leads community education programs and specializes in arts and academic integration. She has a BFA from FSU, is a certified K-12 teacher and holds a Pilates certification from Balanced Body University. Bob Darnall grew up in a bridge playing home and started playing at about ten. Both his parents taught bridge and he is following their examples. A retired engineer who worked on Army missile programs, he is a regular at the Huntsville Bridge Center. Nancy Darnall has a BS in Education and an MBA. Nancy has served on multiple committees and the OLLI Board of Directors. She is a former editor of The OLLI Insider and has been an OLLI instructor for several years, including teaching classes on civil rights and racial justice, The Soundtracks of Our Lives, and more. 16

Anthony Davolos was a VP of Marketing, Advertising and Media in NYC for a global brand. In this role he traveled around the world which shaped his passion and love of travel. Now, he runs a group tour company where he created a department that focuses on continuing education through travel. Helping bring to life “new worlds” and experiences is his passion and Iceland is one of his favorites. Bill Deutsch is an aquatic ecologist with degrees in Zoology, Biology, Anthropology, and Aquatic Ecology. A member of the Alabama Paleontological Society, he searches for fossils statewide. Bill has a life-long interest in fossils and paleontology, and is currently writing a book on the subject. Jeff Delmas holds degrees in Mathematics from Millsaps College and in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech. He worked as a structural engineer on SpaceLab missions before joining Intergraph and spending the rest of his career in software development. Jeff, an avid amateur astronomer, is Director of Observatories at the Von Braun Astronomical Society. Vicki Earnest has spent her life teaching English and French and still teaches French for Calhoun Community College. She enjoys traveling, walking, observing wildlife, star gazing, and supporting the arts. Dr. Jack Fix, Professor Emeritus and former Dean, UAH College of Science, is an astronomer with over 75 peer-reviewed papers, campus wide teaching awards at the University of Iowa, and a widely adapted introductory textbook. Rebekah Frank is a 500-RYT certified yoga teacher who loves to work with individuals to find the right movements for their unique bodies. She has been teaching for 7 years and loves to work with OLLI. Christa French, a German native, has lived in the US for 29 years. She got her nursing degree in Germany, was a pediatric nurse for 15 years in Germany, and then worked in the US. She retired four years ago from Huntsville Hospital as an RN. Dr. Jennifer Geist, Executive Director of First Stop, has more than 25 years of experience in employee and community engagement, public relations, program development, and corporate leadership. She’s held leadership positions at The Salvation Army of Huntsville & Madison County, as well as the Downtown Rescue Mission. Prior to that, she worked in employee engagement and development for Teledyne Brown Engineering. Katie Greene serves as the Education & Resource Specialist for the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at UAH. Greene develops, organizes, and conducts training and development opportunities for both the UAH campus and Huntsville area. Greene has worked in higher education for over four years and is currently working on their Master's of Human Resources Management at UAH. Dr. Daniel Hornstein has taught music for over 40 years and was named one of "America's Top 500 Music Educators” by the MENC . He has conducted orchestras throughout the US and Europe, and is also a performer. He served as the featured euphonium soloist of the USAF Band, Washington, DC, during the Vietnam War.

Mike Janssen is a retired Director of Account. Mr. Janssen has a BA in sustainability energy from the University of Massachusetts, and a master's in sustainability and environmental management from the Harvard Extension School, Harvard University. His career concentrated on driving business growth for a Fortune 100 company, addressing the needs of major military commands by concentrating on the development of innovative energy conservation measures, sustainability, and systems integration. Steve Keiser has a B.A in Sociology from Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville and taught college-level Sociology classes as a graduate student. He spent most of his career as a US Army civilian employee and retired in 2016. Betty Koval has been an avid reader since she was able to hold a book. She is a former HR Administrator and lifetime volunteer. She is a member of various book clubs but, most of all, a supporter of many authors. Tennent Lee retired after practicing law in Huntsville for 43 years. He holds B.S. and J.D. degrees from the University of Alabama. Since his retirement Tennent has become an avowed "history junkie," especially military and political history. George Martin has been donating fossils to The University of Alabama Museums since 2005 when he first brought in a partial fossil sea turtle shell and pelvis from the late Cretaceous of Alabama. A retired soil scientist from the US Department of Agriculture- Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS), he has been interested in geology and paleontology his entire life. John Mason was, for most of his adult life, a contracting specialist with the U.S. Government. Now happily retired, he spends his time in Huntsville, Alabama studying the American Civil War and Military History in general, along with a somewhat eclectic range of other subjects. His current book is a historical-fiction novel about the American Civil War. When not researching and writing, he likes to spend time reading, computer gaming, walking, and, of course, teaching. Elliott Miller is a well-known photo-realistic artist. His oil portraits, acrylic paintings, and charcoal drawings have been seen in exhibitions, museums, libraries, schools, and private collections nationwide. Leka Medenbach received her MA from Stanford University and was a Hollins University faculty member in Roanoke, Virginia. Leka actively volunteers with several Huntsville community organizations and has been teaching German for OLLI for 10 years. Melissa Morphew is an award winning poet and the author of six poetry collections with over 25 years experience teaching creative writing. She is Clinical Associate Professor for the College of Professional Studies at UAH. Yamilé Nuckels is a retired Science Teacher from Grissom High School where she taught for more than 30 years. She has also taught Introduction to Spanish Workshops for Alabama Education Association.

Jerry Pang, a former OLLI Board member, is actively involved in the practice of Tai Chi, focusing on the health, fitness, and balance benefits of the Simplified 24 form. Dr. Patti Patrick is a retired Associate Dean from the College of Business at the University of New Orleans with a PhD in Strategic Management from the University of Mississippi. She has participated in numerous classes as a retiree at Chautauqua Institution in western New York annually and has led a short story analysis group In for many years. Tom Prescott is a bilingual Canadian and a bit of a Francophile. He has lived in several French speaking areas (Montreal, France, Suisse, Ottawa) and visits France regularly. He always enjoys the opportunity to gather with others to "jaser un peu" (Quebecois for chat). Mike Reinke grew up in the fifties and sixties during the peak of the folk music revival. While in retirement, he has developed a pronounced avocational interest in the history of American folk and roots music and in how this music has influenced American culture. He has been working on an OLLI course sequence on the subject for approximately two years. Janet Reville, a retired financial assistant, has always enjoyed crafting and learning new techniques. From needle arts and beading jewelry to paper crafts and food creations, her curiosity (and short attention span) has allowed her to sample a variety of DIY projects. Janet has been an OLLI instructor for several years and an active volunteer in the program. Richard Rhone has taught American history for OLLI for over a decade after retiring from careers in public education administration as well as child abuse and neglect prevention. His topics generally range from the American Colonial/ Revolutionary War through the War Between the States and the Wild West with an emphasis on the personalities and social aspects of history. His doctorate is from The University of Alabama. Bob Robertson is retired from the Army. After retirement, he went to Law School, and provided free legal service and representation to indigents in North-Central Alabama. He has enjoyed teaching OLLI courses over the past 15 years. Nona Rogers has a BS in Art Education from Mississippi State and continuing coursework from UAB and UAH. She has 38 years of teaching experience in art, creatively gifted, MR and EH, and the academically gifted. Traci Romine, owner of Madison Ballroom Dance Studio, has been a professional ballroom dance instructor for 15 years. Traci loves ballroom dance because it enhances physical and mental health and enriches relationships. Dr. John Scales, a Huntsville native, spent his professional life in the military, teaching school, and working for a contractor in Huntsville. He has a PhD in engineering and retired from the military as a brigadier general. John Schweinsberg learned German in a bilingual household. He holds BS and MS degrees in mathematics from the University of Michigan. After a first career as computer programmer, he worked as a freelance Germanto-English translator for 14 years.

Yvonne Simms is a retired Boeing engineer. She is an amateur genealogist. This led to a desire to record her life story. She has been a student of both Val Seaquist and Betty Carlton in their Writing Your Life Story courses. Yvonne taught the class this summer and is looking forward to teaching it this fall. Lacey Simmons is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a Degree in Finance. She has been in the Investment Business for over 10 years and has extensive knowledge and experience to provide strategic and tactical solutions to protect your assets in retirement. Laterrica Shelton joined UAH in April 2017 as the Director of Compliance and Title IX Coordinator. After serving as interim Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Laterrica was appointed Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in February 2020. As Vice President, she is the senior executive at UAH responsible for providing a campus-wide vision for all major efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion in support of the university’s strategic plan, as well as advising the university community on those matters. Brimmer Sherman is a local beer aficionado, he currently works at Yellowhammer Brewery, is a home brewer, gives brewery tours and teaches Appreciation of Craft Beer classes at taprooms and UAH. Barbara Staggs has been a member of the Huntsville Photographic Society for many years where she has achieved the level of Master of Photography. She has received the President’s Award twice for most points in a year in the Competition events. Barbara has taught a Photographic Composition class and bonuses at OLLI for many years. Nicole L. Stiltner is the business law attorney at Legal Journeys, a law firm in Madison, Alabama. After graduating from the Appalachian School of Law in 2012, she spent the first few years of her career as in-house counsel for an engineering company where she focused on government contracts. Chris Stuhlinger is a recently retired forester and ISA Certified Arborist. He returned to his hometown of Huntsville after a 35-year career working in Louisiana, Maryland, and Arkansas. He currently assists with tree-related activities at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Chris has taught other OLLI courses about tree care and travels to numerous destinations. Jane Stull, a Huntsville native, had a long career as an elementary school teacher before starting her own business as a Stampin' Up demonstrator. Jane has been stamping for over 20 years and has taught card making for OLLI for two years. Janet Tedrow is a retired elementary and special education teacher who moved to Alabama in 2013 to live with her daughter. She learned to play Mah Jongg while living in Florida. She has played for seven years and taught the game for the last three. She plays twice a week in Huntsville and has played in Mah Jongg tournaments and on cruises.

Pam Tejes is a certified yoga teacher with over 500 hours of training compliant with Yoga Alliance guidelines and is experienced in teaching yoga for all ages. She believes that the lessons we learn on our mat can transform our lives off the mat. Devin Townsend received his Bachelor's degree in Communication Arts with a minor in Film & Theater Studies from UAH and is currently pursuing his Master's in Professional Communication. Film and media has been his passion for some time now. In his free time he enjoys producing content for The Best Part of Your Day with Devin & Taye, discussing issues, giving advice and sharing experiences. He has been working with the UAH Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for the past year and a half. Joseph Vick serves as the Director of Museum Education and Digital Education Outreach. His focus is museum hands-on and digital learning programs. He has 14 years of veteran work experience with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. In his tenure at the Rocket Center, he has actively been involved in both Space Camp and Museum education curriculum development, staff training, and guest engagement. Carol Watts learned Nordic Walking in Finland, then took a training class with the American Nordic Walking Association and a training class affiliated with the Nordic Walking U.K. She has been Nordic Walking in the United States, Italy and the United Kingdom. Susan Webb is an experienced landscape designer, contractor, and nursery woman. She is an active volunteer with the Hosta Society of North Alabama, the Huntsville Botanical Garden, and OLLI. She specializes in custom design and installation for residential landscapes. Debbie West graduated from UAH with a bachelor's degree in art. Awarded two Fulbright Scholarships for the study of art in China and Turkey, she has traveled extensively in Europe to study original works of the Masters. She taught art in the Huntsville City School System for 25 years. Dixie Wilson has taught in a variety of roles, including in public and Montessori schools. She has been drawing pencil portraits since 2000 and loves teaching the unique skills she's learned along the way. Scott Witt is a retired Navy cryptologist of 28 years who worked primarily for the National Security Agency as a field operations specialist, intelligence analyst, and Russian interpreter. At his retirement, he was Director of the Office of Weapons and Space, at the National Security Agency. Monica Yother is an artist and graphic designer, and has been art journaling for many years, leading small groups in this practice for two years. Monica lives in Huntsville and has a studio at Lowe Mill.

What if I cannot access my online account? To reset your password or username, select Forgot Password or Forgot Username on the registration login page. For further assistance, call 256.824.6183 to obtain your user name and temporary password. How many courses may I take per term? You may take as many courses as you wish! The $20 tuition covers the term registration fee. From there, you can select as many courses as you would like and each one has a different course fee. Please see per course fee as identified in the course description. Can I get a refund if I decide to withdraw from courses? Due to the low cost at which these courses are provided and the additional cost to process refunds, no refund is given for those who wish to withdraw from courses. Please contact the Registration Office if you wish to drop a course to allow wait-listed members to enroll. What is the difference between the membership and course registration fees? The $25 membership fee provides all the membership benefits listed on page 2. The $20 tuition is paid per term for enrollment in as many courses as you wish. Per course fees vary by course. Each course will have a per course fee depending on how many sessions it has. Does OLLI provide member financial assistance? Yes. For assistance information call 256.824.6183. Who attends OLLI courses? OLLI is identified as a lifelong learning organization for adults 50 and over, whether working, retired, or semi-retired. However, there is no set age requirement and you are welcome to join at any age! Who teaches OLLI courses? Instructors are qualified members of OLLI, the University, and other professionals in the community who enjoy sharing their knowledge. OLLI is proud of its volunteer teachers and speakers, many of whom are well-known experts in their fields. What are the OLLI at UAH Library Benefits? Members may utilize selected services at the Salmon Library for no additional fee. Visit the User Services desk to obtain a user card and services explanation. More information at Osher.uah.edu/Benefits. What are the UAH Fitness Center benefits? Members will be able to join for a short term (3 months), and will receive $10 off the monthly membership rate. What are OLLI at UAH COVID-19 guidelines? Following CDC and UAH guidelines, OLLI members, students, faculty/staff, are required to wear face coverings indoors on campus, regardless of vaccination status.

OLLI Commuter Parking Permits As part of your OLLI membership, you will receive a Commuter Parking Permit. All participants must complete a new OLLI permit application* to receive a 2021/22 Commuter Parking Permit. Permits from previous academic years are not valid.

Handicapped Parking Guidelines

A valid permit must be clearly displayed from the rear view mirror while on campus.

If you have a state DMV-issued Disability Access hang tag or license plate, please visit the Parking Management Office to have it validated.

Parking Permit Applications Applications are available online at Osher.uah.edu/OLLIParkingPermit. The application requires vehicle year, make, color and type; driver’s license number, state of issue, and license plate number.

Please Note: The office has moved and is now located in CTC 147.

Submitting Applications OLLI members can apply for parking permits in the CPS registration office in Wilson Hall, Room 103 during Open House, or prior to the first day of class. Parking permits must also be validated in the Registration Office at the start of each term. See map below for current designated commuter parking zones.
