CHARGER TRADITIONS CHARGER TRADITIONS Learning and participating in Charger traditions is not only fun, but also a great way to meet new friends. Here are just a few of our traditions to help you get started.

The BIG Event

Convocation The University Convocation is a formal welcome for new students and faculty. It’s the culminating event of the Week of Welcome and it sets the tone for the new academic year and our collective pursuit of intellectual exploration. It’s followed by the annual President’s Picnic with lots of free food and fun.

High Five

Fridays

Student Leadership Conference

Week of Welcome Week of Welcome (WOW) is a campus wide set of programs and activities intended to welcome new and returning students back to campus. WOW is packed with social, educational, and informational programs that will allow you an opportunity to interact with other UAH students, faculty and staff. It is a great way to make new connections, find your way around campus, and get free stuff! uah.edu/wow

Homecoming Homecoming is a week in October filled with fun events that promote school spirit and tradition among the entire campus community, including students, alumni, administrators, faculty, and staff. Throughout the week, various offices, departments, and student organizations sponsor events including: Movie Night, Can Creations, Charger Stomp, Paint the Town Blue, Midnight Madness, and Muddy Mayhem! uah.edu/homecoming

UAH’s largest single day of service, the Big Event is sponsored annually by the Student Government Association. UAH students go to sites all around Huntsville to lend a hand to a variety of service projects.

The Student Leadership Conference is a one-day event that provides students with the opportunity to attend presentations on various leadership topics. Session topics can range from team building, leadership style, and goal setting to time management and public speaking. uah.edu/slc

Everyone enjoys ending the week on a high note! UAH Fridays are all about free, fun, and of course, Charger spirit! It’s a simple concept: Wear Charger Blue EVERY Friday, get spotted by a member of the High Five Friday crew, slap palms and receive cool freebies.

Family Weekend A celebration in honor of parents, grandparents, guardians, siblings, and all extended family members! Students and their families can participate in a variety of scheduled activities, enjoy campus, and explore the city of Huntsville. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to spend time together. uah.edu/familyweekend

Charger Blue

Fight Song You’ll want to learn the words to this tune quickly so you can join in at Convocation, Charger Spirit Night, and sporting events! We are the Chargers who wear Blue and White! We have the courage and the strength to fight! Shout the battle cry – U! A! H! Have pride in your Blue and White!

Appearing at University sporting events and social activities, Charger Blue is UAH’s #1 athletic supporter. He is the ringleader of the spirit group Blue Crew and is a member of the cheerleading team. In his spare time, you’ll find him representing the University at various community events.

UAH Monument Located on the University Center quad, the UAH Monument is a major source of information for campus events, spreading school spirit, and celebrating accomplishments. Painting the monument allows students to leave their mark on campus, over and over again!

CHARGER Nation Lingo EVERY COMMUNITY HAS ITS OWN UNIQUE CULTURE AND LANGUAGE. FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION, IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW THE LINGO. HERE ARE SOME FREQUENTLY USED TERMS THAT WILL KEEP YOU IN THE KNOW AT UAH. “A” Number - Student identification number. This number will be used University-wide instead of your social security number. Your number is assigned when you apply and was included in your acceptance letter.

Catalog - Official University document which includes detailed information about degree programs in all colleges, residency requirements, financial aid, and course descriptions. Visit catalog.uah.edu.

Academic Advisor - Each College provides professional academic advisors to help plan your academic career. You are required to meet with an Academic Advisor each semester.

Charger ID/LDAP - is the beginning of your UAH email address. Your Charger ID will be used for logging into your UAH email account, ANGEL, ChargerNet and Banner.

Academic Standing - Your status as a student. Depending on your GPA, your standing could be good, warning, probation, or other classifications.

ChargerNet - is a secure web portal that provides a single point of access to manage student accounts in Banner and ANGEL. Students user their Charger ID & password to enter. chargernet.uah.edu

ANGEL - A web-based course management and collaboration portal that students use to access course assignments and materials from instructors. You will log into ANGEL using your Charger ID and password. Visit angel.uah.edu. Audit - To enroll in a course without receiving credit for it. Audited courses do not count toward full-time enrollment. Bachelor’s Degree - Academic degree awarded at the end of your college career. Banner Self-Service - Online student information system. You can register for classes, pay your university bill, and update your personal contact information, such as current term schedules, grades, and financial aid status. Visit register.uah.edu. The student must be awarded both majors in the same term. Elective - Each degree program allows for elective credits, which students may use to study courses different from or related to the ones in their major. Some students use electives to add a minor certificate to their degree programs or to complete requirements for another major. GPA - Grade point average. Your GPA is determined by Quality Points divided by Semester Hours. Your GPA is updated in Banner at the end of every semester. Major - Set of specified courses within a broad curriculum. For example, Spanish is a major in Liberal Arts. The word major is commonly used instead of curriculum to describe the academic focus of all of the degree programs. OL - Orientation Leader. A current student who will help you navigate your transition to UAH. Prerequisite - An academic requirement that must be satisfied prior to enrollment in a specific course. RAC - Registration Access Code (RAC) is an assigned number that provides you access to your registration information. You are assigned a new RAC each term. The code is only available after meeting with your academic advisor. Registration - Process by which you become officially enrolled in the University for a given term. You select courses in consultation with your academic advisor, enroll in them via the Banner Self-Service system and make any necessary schedule changes.

The Student Success Center (SSC) provides academic and career support programs that empower individuals to realize their potential as lifelong learners and professionals. The Center’s programs and services are available to all currently enrolled students. uah.edu/ssc

Here’s what students are saying about the SSC! “My tutor was kind, understanding, and very helpful.”

“ My PASS leader was the best! I could not have made it through my class without her help.”

Career Development and Cooperative Education offers a comprehensive career development process that includes: career coaching, major and career assessment, job search assistance, on-and off-campus recruiting, and multiple experiential learning options for UAH students.

Student Life LIVING ON CAMPUS Our research proves that students who live on-campus have higher grade point averages, are more engaged in social activities, have greater interaction with faculty, and are more involved in research and co-op opportunities than students living off-campus. Get a head start and join the Suite Life with UAH Housing. Where am I going to live? Living on campus is required for first- and second-year students with the exception of those students whose permanent address is within a 30-mile radius of UAH. Once you have submitted a housing application, The Housing and Residence Life Office will provide you with your specific housing assignment (in early July), including your new mailing address, your move-in date, and housing payment instructions. Call 256.824.6108 or visit housing.uah.edu for more information on making your housing reservation, requirements, and costs. When do I move in? Move-in day is generally the week before the start of classes. Fall 2014: Friday, August 15, 2014 Spring 2015: Friday, January 9, 2015 Volunteer and move-in crews will help you unload your vehicles and assist you with moving your belongings into your room. Helpful Housing People Resident Assistant (RA): A current UAH student who advises and develops community programs within each residence hall. Resident Director (RD): A full-time, live-in professional staff member who supervises a residence hall.

Frank Franz Residence Hall (FFH) This residence hall is reserved for our Health Professions Community, our Health and Wellness Community, and our Honors Community and is located just across the street from historic Morton Hall. FFH offers a suite-style living arrangement with two full baths in each suite along with four private bedrooms. All FFH suites include cable, Internet, and local phone service. FFH also features a multi-purpose room, which is one of the more popular social spaces on campus. The communities in FFH are described below in further detail: • Honors Community is designated for those who are a part of the Honors College. By living together you receive influential resources to achieve both social and academic success.

First-Year Residence Halls Central Campus Residence Hall (CCRH) This residence hall is dedicated to the first-year student experience and is adjacent to the University Center on the north end of the UAH campus. CCRH offers a suite style living arrangement with two full baths in each suite along with four private bedrooms. All CCRH suites include cable, Internet, and local phone service. The facility also contains two specific communities: • Engineering Community: This theme community provides Engineering majors with a collaborative, positive environment in which to learn about themselves and the engineering profession. • Leadership Education and Advising Program (LEAP): This community assists with first-year students in their transition to college life. Housing and Residence Life works in collaboration with the Student Life Leadership Office to create opportunities for students to get involved and develop their skills in leadership. Participating students are paired with upper-class peer mentors. UAH also offers a unique Six-Week Trial Period Housing Program. Local students whose permanent homes are within 30 miles of campus can get a hint of the residence hall experience before committing to an entire academic year. Of course we know you’ll want to stay once you’ve had a taste of the SUITE life! uah.edu/trialhousing

Room Assignments are completed in mid-July. Students may log into their Banner Account and click on “My Housing” to see their roommates and room assignment.

• Health Professions Community provides students an opportunity to experience programming geared towards those interested in a career in the Health Professions field. Housing staff will work closely with our Nursing Program, our Biology Department, and our Health and Physical Education Department. • Health and Wellness Community will help to provide our students with an environment in which they can focus on their overall health and wellness. Housing staff will work closely with our Health and Physical Education (HPE) Department to better develop each resident of this community in a holistic manner. Living with your roommate Meeting new people is one of the most exciting parts of college life! New residents will be able to interact and get to know other students who are transitioning to UAH. The most important factor in living together is to establish good communication amongst you and your suitemates from the beginning of your time together. Setting clear expectations of each other and encouraging open communication can help you start off on a positive note and maintain a solid, working suitemate relationship throughout the year! Housing and Residence Life has multiple ways to help you and your roommates adjust to college life. If at any time you need assistance, we have our Resident Assistant (RA) staff, as well as our live-in professional Resident Director (RD) to help you!

Please note you will be notified prior to move-in day if your assignment changes. If you would like to submit roommate requests, please email housing@uah.edu. Roommate requests must be mutual and each student must confirm with the Housing and Residence Life Office.

Examples of where to use your Charger Card to make purchases or gain access include: dining venues, bookstores, fitness center, your residence hall, campus entertainment, athletic events, computer labs, copiers, vending and laundry areas, and more. There is a one-time fee of $10 for the official UAH Charger Card. A replacement card will cost $25, if one is lost or damaged.

Dining Dollars The Dining Dollar account is a declining balance account that can be used for food purchases in all of our on-campus dining venues. You can purchase dining dollars in increments of $50 each. Dining Dollars earn a discount for meals purchased in Charger Café or the Bevill Center’s Gardenview Café. Unused Dining Dollars carry over from fall to spring but expire at the end of spring semester.

Charger Card Accounts The Charger Card offers four types of declining balance accounts with no service fees: Meal plans, Charger Bucks, Dining Dollars, and Flex. DINING OPTIONS

What Are Meal Plans?

Dining on campus is a fast, delicious, and convenient way to put an end to those hunger pains. You’ll find a variety of options that will satisfy your cravings.

Meal plan accounts provide credits for pre-paid meals in the UC’s all-you-can eat Charger Café. There are four meal plans that meet University Housing’s requirement for first year freshmen residents and all eight meal plan options meet or exceed Housing’s requirement for upperclassmen residents and the meal requirement for full-time off-campus undergraduates.

Meal plan counts are expended in the Charger Café or Sandella’s located in the University Center (UC). Depending on the plan, meal counts are reset weekly or at the end of the semester. Meal plans are non-transferable. Weekly meal plans have a usage limit of one meal per dining period (breakfast or brunch, lunch, and dinner), and any unused meals expire at the end of each week. Semester allotments do not have this limitation. All meal plans, excluding dining dollars, expire at the end of each semester. For more information visit uah.edu/dining/meal-plans to learn more.
