UALBANY CONCERT BAND Joyance……………….……….….…….Claude Thomas Smith (1932-1987) Claude T. Smith, born in Monroe City, Missouri, received his undergraduate training at Central Methodist College in Missouri, and at the University of Kansas. His compositions include over one hundred works for band, twelve orchestral pieces, and fifteen choral works. This piece was composed later in his relatively short life (1977), and is simply a celebration of music and life.
Autumn Leaves………………………………….Joseph Kosma (1905-1969) Arr. Alfred Reed (1921-2005) Few would guess that this well known tune is the creation of an obscure Hungarian composer, but such is the case. Appearing in 1945 under the title “Hullo levelek” (Falling Leaves), the tune encapsulates the feelings of despair in war-ravaged Europe. The song, with a French lyric by Jaques Prevert, appeared in the 1946 movie “Les Portes da la nuit”. In 1947 Johnny Mercer wrote the English lyric “Autumn Leaves” and the songs path to immortality was secure. A solo piano version in 1955 sold over two million copies and is the only solo piano piece to ever reach number one on the Billboard music chart.
The Complete Harry Potter……..……...Arr. Jerry Brubaker (1946-) This arrangement took over six months for Jerry Brubaker to complete, and contains music from all eight Harry Potter movies. This arrangement combines the music of all four of the composers who took the compositional helm throughout the ten year stretch, and this performance comes ten years after the final movie was released. The contributing composers to the world of Harry Potter are John Williams, Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, and Alexandre Desplat.

The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid), subtitled "Suite in olden style", is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth-century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dano-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754). It exemplifies nineteenth-century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. Although not as famous as Grieg's incidental music from Peer Gynt, which is itself usually performed as arranged in a pair of suites, many critics regard the works as of equal merit. The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is an early essay in neoclassicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era.
