Ministry Guide WORSHIP | GROW | SERVE

Dear UALC family, “Ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.” Ephesians 1:15-16 I know you came to this Ministry Guide for information about what to do next. And you came to the right place. You’ll find helpful information about upcoming worship, small groups, and service opportunities in these pages. But can I say something else first? THANK YOU. We have been through quite a decade this past year! And there is so much to celebrate. You put God first in worship—online, outdoors, indoors, and every which way. You loved one another with phone calls, friendship, and forgiveness in Christ. Your families figured out how to do Kids’ Church in a Box. Through our missions and ministries you supported a record year in our vegetable garden; you sponsored international missionaries, and you supported school children in our area in their craziest year ever. And there’s so much more! For a small sample of how far God has brought us this year, go back and check out ualc.org/2020. In a dry and thirsty year, you have been like an Oasis of God’s grace. Finally, I really hope you’ll be part of our Congregational Meeting on April 25. There’s a lot more I want to share with you, especially about what’s coming up in worship this summer and where I see God leading us in the coming years. And it’s easy: you can Zoom in from the comfort of your own home! You can find the link and all the info at ualc.org/council. In the love of Jesus, Pastor Steve

[ WORSHIP] SERMON SERIES COMING UP THE WAY: THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS Easter isn’t just a Sunday, it’s a season! In the weeks after Easter, we will study the early church and the way that they experienced the resurrecting power of Jesus. We’ll discover that through the Spirit, Jesus continues to make a way for His people, no matter what opposition they faced.

GALATIANS We will finish our year of walking through the Bible with a study of the New Testament letter to the Galatians. In this spiritually and theologically rich book, we are reminded of the true Gospel and called away from any false gospel that would steal the hope we have in Jesus.

I DON’T KNOW YOUR NAME As we begin to venture back to more in-person interaction, it comes with high likelihood that we will need a little help remembering each other. Or perhaps meeting each other for the first time! There’s nothing quite like that moment where you know that you should know someones name, but you just don’t. Lets extend abundant grace to one another as we re-engage, and lets be filled with courage and humility to ask that vulnerable question; “I’m not sure if we’ve met. Remind me your name again?” If you find that you don’t know anybody’s name, or have recently joined our church community, another great way to engage is to attend our New Member Workshop. It’s coming up at the end of April and all are welcome. See above for details. LR: Lytham Road MR: Mill Run

LUTHERAN CHURCH OF SOUTH SUDAN

The Lutheran Church of South Sudan is impacting lives inside and outside of the church walls. Paul Ruot Gak, the librarian assistant at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, is one such life. Paul has experienced extreme trauma as one of the many refugees who walked from war-torn South Sudan to the safety of a refugee camp on the Ethiopian border. He lost his father, wife, and all of his children in the war. He carried his aged mother on his shoulders to get her to safety, but she died on the journey. When Paul arrived in Gambella, he was in a very dark place. He felt he had nothing to live for and merely wanted to die. Rev. William Deng Lual, the Vice President of LCSS, dean of the Upper Nile District of Trinity Lutheran Seminary, took him in, fed him, and encouraged him as Paul attended church and began functioning again. As Paul began to heal through the LCSS and the message of hope from the gospel, he became integrated in the church. The LCSS offered him the library technician job at the school. His income and job has given him a place to serve and a purpose. The church has become his family. In recent years, Paul has married again, now has a child and is enrolled in the nursing program. Despite the huge losses in his life, Paul is grateful to God for the LCSS family and God’s redeeming love.
