The Corporation park was offically opened on thursday 22nd of october 1857, but opened publically on the 23rd of october. In todays money the the price that it cost to build, corporation park was about £634,537. Before the park had its name it was named ‘public park’ it was at a town council meeting on 1855 when the mayor at the time william hoole proposed that the park should be named ‘The Corporation Park’ not everyone agreed with it. One councillor thought that the name should have been ‘Four Syllables’
The statue of flora.the roman goddess of flowers and spring was presented in 1871 by T.H. Fairhurst. Corporation park is 0.5 miles from blackburns town centre. the park is now regestered by english heritage as a park and garden of special historic interest. in 1996 blackburn with darwen borough council receved approximatley ÂŁ3.7 million from the heritage lottery funding. this established restoration of many of the, features of the park. The grand opening of the park was in 1857. and created a sensation in th etown. blackburn was deserted as the mayor led the procession from the town hall to the park to the official opening. shops were closed at noon and manufactuerers let loose their thousands of employees so that they could participate.
