UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS MEDICAL CENTER

I

The University Medical Center took positive action during the past year toward meeting the rising level of expectations from the health services in Arkansas; more and better qualified docton, nurses, pharmacists and health science technologists, quicker and better delivery of new services to patients, and greater freedom of choice by the patient through greater financial independence. The UAMC met the challenge presented by these goals in the following ways: 1. In 1968, 86 Physicians, 23 Nurses, 41 Pharmacists, and 6 Medical Technicians were graduated by the center. 2. 20 students began classes in the School of Dental Hygiene and 6 in the School of Cytotechnology. 3. Medical research received a continuing source of funds through a bequest of $1,000,000 from the late Mrs. T. H. Barton of El Dorado. 4. A third-generation computer was installed which has capabilities ranging from the monitoring of vital signs of patients in intensive care to the storage of legal information concerning malpractice suits. 5. A Children and Youth Project was funded to provide comprehensive care for 8,000 children in deprived areas of Greater Little Rock. 6. Construction on the new Child Study Unit to provide for the psychiatric evaluation and treatment of children and for the training of Arkansas teachers of children with learning problems was scheduled for completion during the year. 7. Approval was secured from the Arkansas General Assembly for a proposal to permit income from professional fees to be used to supplement medical faculty salaries, and as a result the new University Medical Group was established in the hospital to serve referring physicians and their private patients. Consultants to the Commission on Coordination of Higher Educational Finance have recommended that the Medical Center open an additional 123 beds to be earmarked primarily for private, or fuU-pay, patients. This recommendation adds impetus to the UAMC plan to assume greater financial independence and would also allow the institution to extend its unique services to a larger share of the people of Arkansas. Looking further into the future, the Medical Center has submitted to the Commission of Coordination of Higher Educational Finance a ten-year plan for construction needs to add new educational programs and extend its opportunities for research and service. Consultants are preparing a list of construction priorities which will permit full utilization of the existing structure and provide for orderly progression into the Medical Center’s new phase of development.

VETERAN’S ADMINISTRATION HOSPITAL

The Little Rock Veterans Administration Hospital has a total bed capacity of 471 with 9,939 admissions last year and 71,979 outpatient visits. The VAH provides medical and surgical clerkships for junior and senior students and is engaged in an active internship and residency program. In the past year, several improvements have been made in the Little Rock VA Hospital. Four new faculty members, Drs. Padilla, Hall, Adamson, and Patterson, are on the medicine faculty. A new outpatient clinic for opthalmology has just been completed. An 8 bed medicine intensive care unit, a 4 bed coronary care unit, and a 10 bed surgery intensive care unit are under construction. New equipment has been added to the radiology department, and a hemodialysis unit has been approved.

ARKANSAS STATE HOSPITAL

The Arkansas State Hospital has greatly improved its services in the past year. This has been due mainly to increased numbers of qualified staff. Improvement of the total program, together with training programs in psychiatry, affiliate nursing and in-service training program for nursing personnel, have contributed to the upgrading of treatment. The Community Mental Health Program was begun in July, 1967. At that time only 5 counties were receiving mental health services. Now 40 Arkansas counties are receiving some form of mental health service. This is provided by professionals from the State Hospital, the VA Hospitals, the Medical Center, and private physicians. There are now four compre hensive mental health centers and seven community units.

ARKANSAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

From 1967 to 1969, the Arkansas Child ren’s Hospital expanded from a 62 to a 94 bed facility. In 1968, the hospital cared for 5000 children in the clinics. There were 1300 inpatients and 900 of these had sur gery. The hospital is an active participant in Little Rock’s intern and resident training programs. Interns, residents, and acting in terns in orthopedics and pediatrics spend part of their time at Children’s during their training. New additions to the hospital include a new physical therapy department and a new outpatient clinic area. The x-ray department has been expanded two and one-half times. Four new surgical suites and a new Burn Center have been added. New mother-child rooms have been opened on the third floor wing.

TH BARTON RESEARCH Completion of the T. H. Barton Institute for Medi cal Research at the Medical Center opened a new era in medicine in Arkansas. This nine story medical research building was completed in 1960. The impetus for its construction was provided by Col. and Mrs. T. H. Barton in the form of a $600,000 donation. Within the last year, Mrs. T. H. Barton bequeathed $ 1,000,000 to the School of Medicine for Medical research.

MEDICAL DAMES Medical Dames is the name of the University of Arkansas Chapter of the Woman’s Auxiliary to the Student American Medical Association. The wife of any medical student is eligible for membership. One of the major purposes of the organization is to serve as a source of information to acquaint wives of medical students with the profession of medicine and to prepare them to accept the responsibilities of wives of physicians. It also serves to meet some of the social needs of this rather unique group of women whose husbands must often spend long hours studying, working and taking call. It is a philanthropic organization also, donating to various charities each year and giving parties for the children on the pediatrics ward of University Hospital. The group was first organized in 1916. It was disbanded in 1926 and reorganized in 1941. This chapter was among the 26 pioneer chapters represented at the first organizational meeting held in Philadelphia in May 1957 to form WA-SAMA. Arkansas is the first chapter of over 75 chapters across the country to have received the Earlene Simon Smith Chapter of the Year Award twice, in 1963 and again in 1967. It is also the first to have two national presidents from one chapter, Johnnie Amonette in 1965-66 and Jennie Welch, who will serve in 1969-70. Arkansas was one of the first chapters to set aside New Physicians’ Day, held each year in late April to honor all medical students, interns and residents. Officers for this year are: Vicki Fewell, president; Alice Ingram, first vice president; Eleanor Nolan, second vice president, Camille Thurlby, secretary, Linda Landers, corresponding secretary; Glenda Davis, treasurer, Nancy Joyner, historian, and Sheri Farmer, parliamentarian.

DRUG ABUSE EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Kappa Psi bulletin board keeps students informed on drugs of abuse.

Dr. James Dusenberry

Pharmacy students present drug abuse program to the public.

This program was started in 1967, two years ago, by Dr. James Dusenberry, instructor in Pharmacy at the UAMC. Today, it is estimated that some 40-70,000 people are reached and influenced by it. Its purpose . . . to inform, rather than reform, the public concerning drugs of abuse in our society today. Through a joint effort of the students in the School of Pharmacy, programs are presented throughout Arkansas to discourage experimenting with drugs and using the mind as a “playground for these potentially dangerous and harmful agents.

198

“All right, whose turn is it to buy the next two pitchers?”

“Yea, I give it to them right in the ear!”

A typical Freshman Pharmacy student after 3 solid weeks of tests!!

ARKANSAS STATE NURSING STUDENTS ASSOCIATION The U. of A. Nursing students take an active part in their state organization, as evidenced by the repre sentation of five students on the Executive Board— not to mention—the elected advisor and various committee chairmen. Through teamwork with other nursing students, two yearly activities are planned. First, a fall convention is held, which entails various business activities, as well as guest speakers. Second, a spring workshop is conducted and assumes a clinical approach which enlightens the student on many subjects like open heart surgery, disaster nursing, etc. Other yearly events include the election of ‘ideal nursing student’ and the attendance to the National Convention.

GRADUATE

223

Dr. Carl E. Duffy

Assistant Dean of Graduate School Chairman, Department of Microbiology

Today graduate research is becoming more and more a vital factor in expansion of our knowledge in the medical sciences. In keeping with this, the University of Arkansas offers graduate work at the Medical Center in the Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, Pharmacy, Pharmacology and Radiological Health. These various departments contain laboratory facilities of the most modern design, this being essential to meet the demands of modern research. In addition to the usual instrumentation, specialized instruments such as the electron microscope, preparative and analytical ultracentrifuge, amino acid analyzer and scalers for measuring radioactive isotopes are available to fulfill the needs of an expanding research program. Along with this expansion of the research program has come an increasing Graduate School enrollment. These growths are indicative of a good and stable graduate program. The Graduate School, then, plays an essential role in the overall growth and development of the University of Arkansas Medical Center.

Somebody up there likes me.
