UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS MEDICAL CENTER
CADUCEUS 1972
Foreward The Caduceus has been the yearly historica l record of the C enter fo r m any years. The sym bol itself, p ictured at left in the arm of Aesclepius, is a staff abo ut w h ich is entw ined the serpent, the sym bol of healing. Some say the serpent takes on its sym bolism by its lo n  gevity; other, because the annual renewal of its skin suggests the renewal of youth and health; still others suggest the keen sig h t of the serpent. On the cover you fin d the sym bol. We are proud to present the Caduceus as a p icto ria l record of 1971-1972. The book was made possible through, the com bin ed e ffo rts of many individuals and in spite of the e ffo rts of a few. H opefully the book is representative of all w ho live and w o rk here. The E ditors wish to thank all w ho co n trib u te d th e ir tim e and su p p o rt in m aking the 1972 C aduceus a su c cess. O ur special thanks to Mr. Tom W alker of the Hurley C om pany fo r his patience and understanding.

Nursing is music to my ears.
I can't believe I'm going to eat the whole thing.
What you see is what you get!
The only chance for Davey to make a pass at us.
The public's health wasn't considered when they gave us this room to use.
Who says we don't have a close studentteacher relationship?
226
Pharmacy and nursing get together to ex periment with medication cards.
Just foleying around—and by the way, what's your major anyway?
All seniors at the Medical Center get hard up.
I Who would think Middlebrook capable of running down poor white trash?
Jump back Loretta!
Typical seniors—always getting th eir hands into something.
Why don’t you come up and see me some time? If not you'll get over it.

Tulsa M edical Education Foundation, Inc___ ... The Total Teaching Team TULSA. . . where the professional personnel, facilities and resources of major hospitals and related institutions are combined into a complete post-graduate learning experience, drawing from — • Over 60,000 admissions annually • Over 60,000 emergency room visits annually • Over 50,000 outpatient visits annually
INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS continue to be individually based at Tulsa's three major general hospitals — Hillcrest
Medical Center, Saint Francis Hospital and St. John's Hospital. Basic four-month commitment in internal medicine is fulfilled at the parent institution. Rotations at the other two hospitals are then offered as electives if this furthers career development of the intern.
RESIDENCY PROGRAMS are all directly affiliated with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and are
Tulsa-wide in scope. The three major general hospitals offer combined appointments for graduates as straight intern/ first-year residents. These are filled through the national matching plan. Traditional first-year residency programs are available to physicians who have completed an internship. Joint residencies available in:
Internal Medicine Surgery
Also available;
Pediatrics Obstetrics & Gynecology
Pathology residencies at both Hillcrest Medical Center and St. John's Hospital
Children's Medical Center offers its facilities as an added learning experience to those pursuing residencies in pediatrics. Hospital-based specialists and subspecialists play a major role in teaching. Clinical laboratories in many subspecialties are unexcelled. Ample opportunities for clinical research, complete with effective supervision, are available. The Tulsa Medical Education Foundation, Inc., has been established as a central administrative office to coordinate internship, residency and medical students' programs in Tulsa. Write for your brochure describing each program in detail and other educational advantages offered by Tulsa.

What does a r^idency or internship in the Baptist S^tem offer the UAMC graduate?
-4)>. V-
Plenty. The Baptist Medical Center System includes the 437-bed Baptist Medical Center in Central Little Rock, and the 148 bed Memorial Hospital, in North Little Rock. A new 500-bed Medical Complex is under construction in Western Little Rock. Our internships are rotating types 0,1,3,5,6,7,8 with majors and/or electives available in surgery, medicine, radiology, pathology, psychiatry and anesthesia. There are residencies in Radiology, Pathology, and General Practice. (The latter, under the direction of Dr. John Tudor and his staff.) Residents from UAMC in Surgery and Ophthalmology, and ENT rotate here. The special care units for Coronary Care, Pulmonary Care, Intensive Care, Renal Dialysis and Emergency Care offer excellent educational opportunities. What’s more, you will be working with doctors skilled in their special areas of medical practice who know how to teach and who teach by precept the art of the physician-patient relationship. That’s an important point to consider. We’d like to tell you more about our programs. Contact Dr. W. G. Cooper, Jr., Director of Medical Education, 374-3351, Ext. 213, for more details or talk with our present house staff.

Dear Dean Shorey: and I feel that the humor portrayed in the 1 9 7 1 Caduces is not conducive to the fine work and doctors produced by our medical center.
We do not feel free to leave
this book out for our children or friends to view, For this reason, we have decided not to purchase a Caduces this year. Sincerely,
