IN MEMORIAM

Dr. William D. Easterly, Jr. May 16, 1926 - April 22, 1973

“ My name and my place and my tomb, all forgotten, The b rie f race o f time well and patiently run. So let me pass away, peacefully, silently. Only remembered by what I have done.” Bonar

Dr. William D. Easterly, Jr., 46, was Professor of Pharmacy and Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Arkansas School of Pharmacy. A native of Sheridan, Ark., Dr. Easterly also served the pharmacy school as Chairman of the Awards and Scholarship Committee. A fter graduating from Sheridan High School, Dr. Easterly attended college at Georgia Southwestern and the School of Pharmacy at the University of Georgia to fulfill his ambition to work with the public as a pharmacist in his own drug store. Before he received his degree in 1950, Dr. Easterly became a victim of arthritis and his physicians advised him that the crippling effects of the disease would prevent him from operating his own pharmacy. It was at this time that he committed his professional life to academic pharmacy, in the hope of reaching patients through his students. He taught 796 students in the University of Arkansas School of Pharmacy. Dr. Easterly received a master’s degree in 1952 from the University of Georgia and a doctorate from the University of Florida in 1954. He joined the faculty of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Mississippi in 1954 but returned to Arkansas later that year as an assistant professor in the U of A School of Pharmacy. He received his full professorship in 1964. His research interests included the anti-cancer possibilities of certain bromide derivatives and other chemicals as well as the synthesis and possible pharmacological activities of urea derivatives. He was a member of Rho Chi, a pharmacy honor society; Sigma Xi, an honorary scientific society, the American and Arkansas pharmaceutical associations, and the American Chemical Society. He was registered to practice pharmacy in Arkansas and Georgia.

Golden Apple Award IN 1933, William J. Mayo stated “One of the chief defects in our plan of education in this country is that we give too much attention to developing the memory and too little to developing the mind; we lay too much stress on acquiring knowledge and too little on the wise application of knowledge.” Since that time there has been a good deal more change than we, as students, are apt to admit. It is through the efforts of men like those listed here that our system is constantly improved.

Spring 1972

Robert E. Merrill, M.D. Professor of Pediatrics

Lawrence E. Scheving, Ph.D. Professor of Anatomy

Golden Apple selections are made by the students at the end of their sophomore and junior years. These are their selections for the past two years.

Spring 1973 “ If / were summing up the qualities of a good teacher of medicine, I would enumerate human sympathy, moral integrity, enthusiasm, and ability to talk, in addition, of course, to know ledge of his subject.” Anonymous

FOURTH YEAR

Lord, who on earth dids't minister To those who helpiess lay In pain and weakness, hear me now as unto thee I pray.

Grant that mine ears are swift to hear The cry of those in pain. Give to mine tongue the words that Bring comfort and strength again.

Give to mine eyes the power to see The hidden source of ill Give my hand the healing touch The throb of pain to still.

Fill now my heart with tenderness My brain with wisdom true. And when in weariness I sink Give me strength anew.

If you have learned to walk A little more sure-footedly than I, Be patient with my stumbling then And know that only as I do my best and try May I attain the goal For which we both are striving. NSA

N.S.A. is the nursing students' association on the campus at the Univ. of Ark. Med. Center, designed to involve its members in the pre professional organization of the nursing stu dent. Any student enrolled in a state-approved program for the preparation of registered nurses is eligible for membership in N.S.A.

A.S.N.S.A. The U of A. Nursing students take an active part in their state organization. In working with other nursing students, two yearly activities are planned. First, a fall workshop is conduc ted enlightening the student on new trends in nursing. Second, a spring convention is held which entails various business activities, as well as guest speakers. Susan Alexander, UAMC, is now serving as state president. Tom Peterman, UAMC, has been elected to serve as state president for 1974.

Deception isn't part of our game. Never has been. Never will be. We WANT you to know what we pay for. And what we don't pay for. Before you join. Before you have occasion to utilize your Blue Cross and Blue Shield health care plan. Blue Cross and Blue Shield contracts spell out clearly - in language that is easy to understand exactly what services are provided and what services are not. We urge our members to familiarize themselves with the terms of their contract with us. It's good business for our members. Good business for us. When you need covered services, we'll never let you down. We'll be there - dependably. Because we're on your side. And helping you get the most for your health care dollar is one of our most important jobs.
