DEDICATION Dr. Shorey began hisform al education at Lyndon Institute, later receiving his A.B. Degreefrom Dartmouth in 1941 where he was a Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1943 and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. His post-doctoral training includes his Medicine Residency at the University of Pennsylvania, a Fellowship at Pepper Laboratory, and a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Kinsey-Thomas Foundation. His professional appointments, professional society memberships, and appointm ents to health related groups are too numerous to enumerate.

WINSTON K. SHOREY, M.D.

I

DEAN SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Dr. Shorey joined the University Medical Center as Dean of the Medical School in August of 1961. At that time student admissions were low and the attrition rate was unusually high. Over the past 12 years the freshman class admissions have reached a high of 121 in 1973 and the applications for entrance have quadrupled. Due to the institution of improved screening methods as well as curriculum changes which have allowed more flexibility, the attrition rate has been cut drastically to less than 5 per cent for this year's graduating class. During his tenure divisions of biometry, family practice, nuclear medicine, biomedical com m unication and continuing education for physicians in private practice have been established through his unrelenting efforts. The first fulltim e faculty members in Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, and Neurology as well as fully accredited residencies in these fields were also founded during the last 12 years. Under his guidance a training program in cytotechnology, a com puter center, closed circuit television, and the Child Study Center became realities. And the Arkansas Caduceus Club came into existence. Dr. Shorey also helped institute the Maternal and Infant Care Projects, the Arkansas Regional Medical Program, the Children and Youth Project of Pulaski County and the Chronic Renal Disease Program. Federal research grants at UAMC doubled during his first year as Dean and the Barton Foundation invested one m illion dollars for Medical Research and a $400,000 grant to the School of Medicine for scholarships. Through his influence and efforts, the Arkansas General Assembly increased the Rural Health Scholarship Program from an annual loan of $1600 to $5000. During the 69th General Assembly $18,100,000 was funded for rem odelling and construction programs which w ill eventually result in the admission of 170 freshmen medical students. Dr. Shorey retires as Dean of the Medical School for the past 13 years to take the leading role in directing the Area Health Education Centers Program. His presence w ill be missed by many but the heritage that he leaves w ill be a constant reminder to all of a man dedicated to his convictions, devoted to equality of health care, concerned about his fellow man, and exemplary of integrity, seasoned judgm ent, and compassion.

REGISTRATION Registration began with 957 studentsenrolling in UAMCschools. The routine is constant year after year from the fillin g out of myriads of form s to the paying of tra ffic fines avoided for 12 months. Buying insurance comes in handy if you're fortunate enough to get sick between 12 and 1 PM. After this comes w riting tu itio n checks, signing loan papers, posing for I.D. pictures, and signing up for football tickets. All in all, a day well spent in confusion, bewilderm ent, and chaos.

Part of the $18,000,000 appropriated by the legislature was budgeted fo r various improvements as well as additions w hich include; 1. a quick-space office area 2. better parking facilities and tra ffic lanes 3. a Medical Intensive Care Unit 4. a Family Planning Out-Patient Clinic 5. rem odeling of the Emergency Room and Operating Suite 6. elim ination of fire hazardous areas Hopefully, other problem areas such as inadequate teaching positions and salaries, low resident stipends, poorly organized nursing care, and an inefficient security system will not remain unrecognized as they have been the past several years.

SPECIAL AWARDS SECTION ; n . "■ >

V The SANDBAG AWARD is presented to that student who shows the greatest consistency and cunning in persuad ing his classmates that he is on the verge of flunking every exam. This year's recipient is Peter M. "Speedy " Marvin.

The ARCHEY BUNKER SOUND-ALIKE AWARD, which needs no particular explanation, could rightfully go to only one person — Mr. John F. Mumey. Keep that sun lamp on your neck, John!

The first annual HYENA-WITH-A-HERNIA AWARD is hap pily presented to Benji Hall, owing to his singular ability to break every window in the house with a single laug delivered from a distance of four blocks.

Here a couple of familiar faces, one of which appears in a new place this year — Dr. Charles T. Prig more has now assumed his new duties as Associate Dean of the Graduate School. His very energetic and positive approach to Graduate Student affairs has already won him the heartfelt respect and admiration of all of us. Mrs. Wanda Weise, the very capable and hard-working Administrative Assistant to the Graduate School, eases our bureaucratic and administrative plans through her imtimate knowledge of “ the ropes."

GRADUATE STUDENT ASSOCIATION

Officers of the Graduate Student Association this year are, left to right: Chunfu Peng, Treasurer; Mona Teague, Secretary; Michael Yelich, President; and Michael Griffey, Vice President. The Graduate Student Association works toward maximiz ing the quality of Graduate education at UAMC by actively promoting the Graduate program and by providing channels of communication for the exchange of research ideas among ALL Graduate Students.

I was hungry and could not feed myself. You left my food tray out of reach on my bedside table, Then you discussed my nutritional needs during a nursing conference. I was thirsty and helpless, but you forgot to ask the attendant to refill my water pitcher. You later charted that I refused fluids. I was lonely and afraid, but you left me alone because I was so cooperative and never asked for anything. I was in financial difficulties and in your mind I became an object of annoyance. I was a nursing problem and you discussed the theoretical basis of my illness. And you do not even see me. I was thought to be dying and, thinking I could not hear, you said you hoped I would not die before it was time to finish your day because you had an appointm ent at the beauty parlor before your evening date. You seem so well educated, well spoken, and so very neat in your spotless unwrinkled uniform. But when I speak you seem to listen but do not hear me. Help me, care about what happens to me, I am so tired, so lonely and so very afraid. Talk to me— reach out to m e— take my hand. Let what happens to me matter to you. Please, nurse, listen.

Some say “Love” I say more, The soft touch of a cool hand On the fevered body Of failing life Much like the wisp Of a sea breeze On a hot summer’s night, Words quietly spoken To a tortured heart Confined by fear Understood by hope in white, The light of life Taken from Death’s cloud By the glint of a caring eye Or a fallen tear. The imlovable being loved, I say “Empathy” The soul of a nurse God’s greatest gift Through the days ayid nights Of man.

HEALTH RELATED PROFESSIONS 181

SCHOOL OF HEALTH RELATED PROFESSORS The establishm ent of the University of Arkansas School of Health Related Professions was ap proved by the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees on June 4, 1971. This action resulted from the recognition of an obvious need to pro vide a coordinated approach in the education and training of manpower in health related fields. The University of Arkansas has, as do all universities, a broad responsibility in teaching, service, and re search. The School of Health Related Professions is the primary arm of the University for these func tions in allied health. The School of Health Re lated Professions offers program s com bining general education and technical education in a flexible manner to provide for the ever changing educational needs of those pursuing careers in the allied health professions.

TOMORROW’S YESTERDAYS Is this what I really want to do in life, is cleaning teeth so important to me? Do I care .. . I mean really care . . . It seemed so important when I applied and juggled schedules to make it to Little Rock for short interviews. Oh yeh, just a second, no I d on’t have a 10:30 tomorrow, got any ideas? . . . Nope, haven’t gotten up for studying for tomorrows test yet either, just haven't had time . . . yeh, come on in, sure I ’d love to go. What's so hot about a professional school anyway . . . Why remember getting out of class at noon and messing around all day, boy was that rough never having any time for anything. Writing that letter to old mom and dad to be sure they w ouldn’t forget me, but it was easier to just call collect. Maybe if I make up a study schedule, I can keep up this semester and w on’t have to cram so hard during finals . . . wish I could remember all the things that I learned in c iv ... was it Socrates who said that or was it Aristotle? Ambition . . . what is it? Seems I used to have a lot of i t . . . Why d id n ’t I even look at that material last n ig h t . . . Plug in the coffee pot would you? Used to be so easy studying all night, now it's hard, super hard . . . didn’t you say you had a new album we could listen to? It's almost 1:30, maybe if I call she’ll still come . . . everyone else has patients and I ’m getting the evil eye. How can people be so irresponsible . . .The alarm didn’t go off this morning, I was late for school . . . again . . .

si

Today was a great day, a two and half a three . . . and they d id n ’t bleed . . . very much . . . Require ments! . . . why worry about them so much. It all comes out in the w ash-right... How can they expect me to stay awake in class when the lights go o ff and the projector stays on. Home from clinic and still the smell of warm blood and bad breath is on my hands .. . ambition ... what is it, how can one get excited about gagging . . . Today the kid from the blind school learned to floss, it was really neat! Sir, would you be be interested in having your teeth cleaned? Yes, we have to find our own p a tients! . . . Climbed Pinnacle again yesterday, view great, kinda helps clear the head . . . How many retakes! Oh, gotta go wash uniforms and shoestr ings tonight . . . maybe I can get up early in the morning and do it . . . some one said something about Pecks after s c h o o l. . . Oh, you wear dentures, thanks anyway. Okay . . . The first day I came here it was kinda like grade school, small room, just 28 people, the instructors come to us instead of us running all over a campus in five minutes. Wierd . . . Talk about adjustments. How can I stay stimulated and interested seeing the same faces, walls and people eight hours every day. Sometimes the Lilly men or the Orest men stop b y ... Spotted a case ofANUG last week .. . all by myself. News is on now . . . gosh that means its ten, wonder if tomorrows' patients are asleep yet . . . Saw a friend had been to the clinic, was really impressed at how professional everyone looked and a c te d ... Too bad role playing becomes a part of life, too bad her words make me feel successful and im p o rta n t... Would you be Interested in a trip to the Bahamas? Sure I'll go with you . . . what a lie, but after all his chances of winning are only 200 to 1.

D ental H ygiene

D on’t know how the instructors find out so much . .. squealer? Remember when I was just an I.D .# o n a Zerox grade report. These people can't be college professors and d o cto rs... I think they might care ... What if I cut to m o rro w ... kinda hard not to miss one person when there are only 28 desks . . . Made an F on a patient . . . who cares about grades . . . but tomorrow I ’ll show her I can scale. Today I did a fantastic job on a two . . . shamie the rays were no good and I forgot to polish my shoes. Never should have gone to Shakey’s for the noon b u ffe t. . . my one o ’clock will be here in a minute .. . wish he w ouldn’t show, would be nice to siesta for awhile. Why I Why! Why I did she disclose me today I of all days!... waited for fifteen minutes to check out and my 2:30 got tired and le f t... Do I hate unit one or VA the most? . . . you know what you can do with it. I’ve always been told to be kind to old people on the way up because I ’ll meet them on the way down . . . saw an old friend yesterday for the first time in a long time . . . omen? Do you ever have kidney p roblem s?... bleeding?. . . rhuematic fever? . . . OK sign here . . . Oh, ugh, mulberry molars, darn . . . be right back . . . gloves? Yes, they help me hold onto the instruments better. I know Golden Arches is open, went there when I was studying last y e a r,. . . Why procrastinate so . . . pick up the book and get it over with ... it has been a long time since I defrosted the fridge . . . What hap pened to all that self-discipline, maybe it will ice over tomorrow . . . what a vicious circle. No more long vacations now that it ’s over, no more of the same questions when I go home . . . “ How’s school? . . . How’s your love life? . . . Where are you working when you get out? . . . Oh yes, my dentist has an assistant, cute little girl, but she d id n ’t have to go to a special school.’’

187

I'm getting tired of being nice to people (it’s so much easier to be a bitch) if I do something mean now, maybe they will forget it by the end of the year. Headstart, followthrough ... what the difference.. .who cares about or remembers the rotten little kids? If they d o n ’t gag in the x-ray room they’ll squirm or bite in the c h a ir ,. . . he ivas about 6 (first molars shaggy brown head, puppy-dog eyes, dried milk on his lips and dirt on his cheek, holey untied tennis shoes and ragged je a n s ... finished, gave him a tooth brush ... a big tear rolled down his fa c e ... he said I love you . . . Hey, Hey, Hey, no school this afternoon . . . study for boards, are you kidding? When I ^vas little and playing with dolls, I never dreamed my whole educa tional life would hinge on one test som eday. . . Just costs $15 to take . . . what a laugh . . . add te sts. . . at least 16 years of s c h o o l.. . thousands of dollars for books, fees, tuition, laundry, coffee, and red and blue pencils . . . pretty important te s t.. . Yep! Think I will go canoeing after all. You’re enga g e d !. .. that’s great, have you set the date?... I mean really, 10 cancellations in one week. .. you had a w re c k ... Why did you break-up with him .. . Sorry to hear about your b ro th e r. .. you flunked the final . . . lost your instruments . . . again . . . Everyone has problems, but that’s no reason to forget to sign-in. Always thought reversible hydro-colloid had to do with clothes . . . Plaster in water or p u t water in plaster .. . Had a dog who used to set-up, but not as fast as alginate. Why is it “ we” when things are going good, and “ they” when the boat gets rocked? . . . Lake deGrey was fun, nice to see everyone in pla in clo th e s... BTS is gone with the wind . . . Well if I flunk I can always get a job as a maid or waitress.

C r s

Jadha, what's t h a t . . . Oh yeh, I ’ve got a few check stubs to them . . . I remember now, it was written on the program at the Houston convention .. . when we all got the free toothbrushes . . . Houston? Oh yes, the bus t r i p ... zoo, astrodome, pizza, belly-dancing . . . the convention? What convention? D on ’t hoid that wax tooth in the fire . .. oops, too l o n g ! . . . maybe mesial? On that first day I didn ’t know many of the 28 .. . now it seems like I ’ve known them forever . . . 28 distinct personalities, all blended together. Will I remember their names in ten years? . . . Adversity, pressure, mad fear tend to bring people c lo se ... fast . . . Are you sure you d id n ’t have a birthday last month too? Wish there was a way to tell all those people who got me this far in life th a n k s . .. I take a lot for granted . . . Odd that the teachers who made the greatest impact, I either liked or disliked very much. No Kidding? . . . I passed the bo ar d s ? !. . . I finally get the sheepskin!! an ambition fulfilled . . . I AM A PROFESSIONAL . .. remember when I didn't think I cared? Kinda funny to realize I did c a r e ... too much! Tomorrow is tomorrow's yesterday for the 28 . . . Thanks to these who cared . . . the 3N ’s .. . 2lV’s . . . 2D's . . . 2B's . . . C .. . and S . . . They will never know what a giant part they played in our lives . . . Operating room technicians, sometimes cal led surgical technicians, have tra d itio n a lly been skilled in technical procedures, usually as instrum ent passers, in the operating rooms of hospitals. Due to the growing shortage of professional nurses, however, the trend in education of operating room technicians is toward preparation for a broader role than the traditional one. This curriculum follow s current tre n d s in p ro v id in g the te c h n ic ia n w ith a broader base for perform ing in a number of settings requiring aseptic procedures and the use of surgical equipment. The curriculum pre pares the technician to work with skill and un derstanding in recovery, emergency, labor and delivery rooms as well as in the operating room.

The Associated Student Government is an organization formed by representatives chosen by each of the classes in all the schools at the Medical Center as well as the officers who are elected by the study body. In the past, the main concern of this organization has been scheduling the main social events involving all the schools. This year these included seven dances, the annual New Year’s Party, and the all-school outing as well as several movies and coffee-houses. Attempts have been made to institute changes with respect to student housing, recreation, health, and other areas. However, most of these were met with strong opposition from the adm inis tration due to the students’ low ranking with respect to expenditure priorities. Maybe some day, the adm inistra tion w ill realize that student attitudes toward their studies and toward the adm inistration are pertinent enough to assign a greater priority to non-academic student affairs as most other institutions already realize.
