URBAN DESIGN STUDIO SPRING 2017
ARTICULATING THE EDGE
The western edge of University at Buffalo’s Main Bailey Campus presents a compelling urban condition. Here, the institutional scale of the campus is juxtaposed with the infrastructural scale of the transfer station and the residential scale of the University Heights neighborhood. While the space has a distinct civic character, it lacks a coherent formal articulation. Expansive surface parking lots on both sides of the street and the undistinguished commercial plazas exacerbate the sense of groundlessness. -Abridged from Syllabus summary
ARTICULATING THE EDGE Imagining the Futures of University Heights
As a studio, we investigated formal startegies to orchestrate the issues at various scales in order to reveal and maximize their latent potential, for each site. Working in small groups, we focused on key sites of intervention at multiple scales. Throughout the semester we focused on the notions of urban-active buildings, adaptable architectural/ urban ensembles, “future -proofness”, and contingent architectural design strategies to accomodate change. -Abridged from Syllabus summary

CHANGING THE PERSPECTIVE Looking at the University from the Neighborhood The ultimate idea of the studio was to develop and enhance the TownGown relations at an urban design scale. Hence, while doing an analysis of the assigned site, we looked at it from the TOWN to GOWN perspective. The University Plaza has been an active parcel of
land, which sits at the border condition between two cites, the city of Buffalo, and the town of Amherst. It is also one of the first TOWN parcels that one encounters while entering towards the UB campus from North, hence also making this site an apparent gateway to the GOWN.
CINCINNATI CINCINNATI CINCINNATI
The core objective of this seminar was to develop an intellectual framework and measure for interrogating university edge conditions (TOWN and GOWN), through drawing. By doing a focused case-study on the University of Cincinnati campus, a comparative lens was developed for analyzing a series of TOWN-GOWN efforts of the university by unearthing its unique development pracThe university campuses are ever growing and active places tices that cross or blur the historical across all over the world. Proceeding with a drawing exercise to build a deep understanding of the existing site conditions with their strengths and weaknesses. Historically, the University Plaza has had a complex ownership pattern. This site has a place in the local retail history as the area’s first sub-urban shopping plaza. Through the analysis, high pressure traffic conditions, massive on-site surface parking, unorganized built structures and irregular pedestrian movements were some of the major issues that need to be resolved.

The one huge surface parking is sub-divided among three plaza spaces. The first plaza space, located at the Main street level is a public space, which is covered with trees, hence linking to the landscape of the university with the linear park Olmstead-ian concept. With every 12’ to 15’ drop in each of the sub-plaza spaces, the escarpment condition is re-established. This also gives a direct vehicular and pedestrian connection from the front side (Main Street) to the back side (Princeton Avenue), further reducing the existing traffic pressure.

O K A Y CARS The humans are used to cars, just the way a fish is used to the water. The number of cars is not the problem. However, the number of trips to and forth the different destinations is the problem. Hence, on this large site, there was a scope for intervention to further divide the land
parcels, and integrate/segregate the pedestrian and vehicular movements. Cars are a necessary evil. So, OKAY CARS! Through multiple iterations, a design strategy was developed to make the public spaces – PUBLIC, a space for both cars and the people.
INTERVENTION You could be on foot or in the car, but once you are in the University Plaza, you will not have to halt.. Ever!

Integrating the pedestrian movement with the vehicular movement and hence making the public spaces for both people and cars.
Pedestrian and vehicular movements work coherently while different plaza spaces (A/B/C) are reserved for public gatherings or other events. Hence taking an Urban approach of making the PUBLIC involved with the SPACE through a design strategy.

OKAY CARS! Yet again! The main idea is to smartly hide the surface parking from the pedestrian’s view while on Main Street. The level drop in each plaza space accommodate surface parking while maintaining the green that seems to be pulled in from the University at Buffalo’s lawn.
Additionally, the proposed development includes more or less the same spaces for parking, while carefully integrating the landscape. Each plaza has an underground parking.

The new tri-campus organization of UB makes South “Main-Bailey Campus” the pivot - a strategic position that can be cultivated to spawn a more extraverted presence to benefit the entire district. The studio work proceeded on the basis of parallel transformation strategies for both the district and the campus, eschewing the common campus-led expansion models.
Starting with a critical re-reading of the UB 2020 Physical Master Plan, we as a studio, sought hybrid models of intervention that can fulfill the plan’s broader promises. We also developed scenarios that can simultaneously activate the latent potential of both the campus and the city, focusing on 6 key sites located at the campus’ edge. -Abridged from Exhibition installation sheets
