Sermon Title: The Temple of The Holy

Sermon Text: 1 Peter 2:4-5, 9, 12

Small Group Text: 1 Peter 2:1-12

Introduction

There are a lot of buildings right now that are not accomplishing the purpose for which they were built. What are the consequences when that happens? The Bible tells us that we – the set-apart people belonging to God – we are the church! And that we, like a building, have a quality of design and a purpose for which we are being built. Let’s see what the apostle Peter says to us about the construction project God has in mind for the church.

Discussion

Read I Peter 2: 1-12

1. Verses 1-2 remind us that God wants to use high-quality building

materials in this project. What impurities does He want removed (in verse 1?) How do we rid ourselves of these impurities? (verse 2) In verses 3-8, Peter tells us that as we rid ourselves of these impurities, God begins to build our lives together to form a spiritual house. In verse 6, what is the purpose of a cornerstone? Who is the cornerstone of the church? If Christ-followers are the “living stones,” what do we need to do to ensure we align with Christ, the “cornerstone”? In verses 1-8, Peter helps us understand that God has a quality of design for His church. In verses 9-12, He shows us that God has a purpose for His church! Read verses 9-10 again. What is the purpose for this spiritual house/His church? How might the hidden impurities in my life (verse 1) affect the overall integrity of the church? In verses 11-12, what is the purpose for “living such good lives?”

Application

1. What are some of the impurities in our lives that God may want to clear up so that we can be good building material? 2. What 2 or 3 steps might we take in the next month to rid ourselves of those impurities? 3. The purpose for our spiritual house is a collective purpose. One stone does not make a building. We cannot accomplish God’s purpose by ourselves. How will you align yourself to the cornerstone and facilitate God’s purpose of redeeming a broken world back to Him?
