Sermon Title: Turn an OW into a WOW
Sermon Text: Luke 10:25-42
Small Group Text: Luke 10:25-37; Romans 13:8; Prov. 3:27-28
Introduction
What is the “right thing to do” when you owe a debt to someone? Most of us are familiar, to some degree, with the idea of being in debt. And most of us feel a strong obligation to pay back that debt. How is it possible to be indebted to someone in ways other than financial? How might you pay off that kind of debt? Scripture tells us that we have a “love debt” incurred because of what Christ has done for us. Read Romans 13:8. According to this verse, when is your love debt paid in full? Jesus taught that we have an on-going obligation to love others – a debt to Him that we pay back by paying forward. In Luke 10, we will see one of Jesus’ most profound teachings on what that means in our everyday life.
Discussion
Read Luke 10:25-37 1. The expert in the law quotes from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18. How do these two commands summarize the essence of what God desires in our lives? 2. To challenge the expert of the law, Jesus portrays the hero in this parable as a Samaritan. This despised outsider demonstrates obedience to God's law of love by his actions. What specific ways did the Samaritan "take pity" on the victim (See Luke 10:33-35)? What could be Jesus' reasons for including such details? 3. What is Jesus’ point in this story?
Application
1. How is it possible to love someone that you may not like? 2. In addition to finances, what other resources do you have with which to show love? 3. How might our small group combine resources to become the “Good Samaritan and give love to hurting people in our community? 4. Read Proverbs 3:27-28. Name one person you should be a Good Samaritan to this week. What step will you take to pay forward on your debt to love?
