Introduction

Application

We are bombarded every day with commercials, music and images that try to tell us how our life should look-like and what will make it flourish. “If you have this certain car or truck you’ll be better off.” “If you look a certain way or wear a certain brand, you’re life will be better.” Most of those ideas only focus on a limited view of life and not our whole life. The Scriptures teach us how to live more fully, focusing on all aspects of life. Jesus said, in John 10:10 “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” He wants our lives to flourish. But how do we get there? The Scriptures we will study today give us a hint on how to live a full and flourishing life. Read Psalm 1:1-6 1. In your own words describe the flourishing life you see in verse 3. 2. What conditions do you see in verses 1-2 that sets someone up for a flourishing life? What should you avoid? What should you do? 3. What does it mean to “meditate” on God’s word “day and night?” 4. How does meditation – listening to God speak to us through Scripture – make our life flourish? 5. What is the point of the tree comparison?

1. Reading the Scriptures and meditating on them was obviously important to the Psalmist David. Truthfully, how important is reading the Scriptures and meditating on them to you? 2. If, in truth, most of us do what we want to do. What keeps you from spending time in God’s word? 3. What commitment are you willing to make to spend time in God’s word over the next three weeks? 4. What Scripture will you start with, to begin this conversation with God? (Consider the Gospel of John.)

5. When God gives you a directive, how will your response affect future conversations with God?

Practice meditating on God’s Word this next week: Commit to a time and place. Make sure there are no distractions. Along with your Bible, have a way to take notes. Read a short passage of Scripture and allow God to personalize it. Ask God questions or comment about what you heard Him say. Write down what you heard Him say and how plan to respond. Put into practice your plan of response.
