of UBCO. The library is no longer large enough to fully accommodate the needs of students who wish to utilize it as a study space. Extra tables have been added to the Fipke foyer yet there is still a lack of open tables, and the challenge to find an available couch to sleep on in the Arts atrium is next to impossible. This lack of accessible study space has become a major concern for the Students’ Union, and the need for new study spaces becomes more and more obvious. In an attempt to mitigate this problem, the UBCSUO has put forth a referendum to the students of UBCO: “Do you support the UBCSUO establishing a student society fee of $70.00 per academic year payable in the amount of $35.00 for each of term one and term two of the win-

ter session for the purpose of supporting the construction of a new Learning Centre/Library space to be centrally located on campus?” The referendum, which will be held on October 29 and 30, is to determine whether or not students are willing to help contribute $10 million to the estimated $24-30 million budget for the project. After the $10 million dollar payout by students, it will be the responsibility of the University of British Columbia and donations from external sources to contribute the rest of the funding. “The intent of this is that students fund one third of the project. One third is students, one third is the university, and one third is donors is what we’re hoping for“, said UBCSUO President Rocky Kim, spearheading the project. Kim’s goal is that the approval of

the student referendum and their financial contribution to the project would display that students are active and willing to see an expansion of the library. “I will benefit from the increased reputation this campus will have when I graduate, and they build that library… I’ll feel proud of it”, said Kim. “I’ll come back onto this campus and say something that I contributed to was built. And they will recognize that students contributed to this building….This was something that we did together”. The Students’ Union has been using media sources, such as the student survey conducted by the library last year, #morelibrary, to determine student opinion and desires for the expanded library. The referendum requires a voter turnout of 455 students with over 50 percent of votes as “yes”, to be passed. If approved, tuition increases can be expected by September 2015. If the referendum does not pass, the Students’ Union still intends to pursue a plan for a new building on campus, but there will be no definite timeline for completion. “If this referendum passes, a building will go up, no matter what”, said Kim. “This would be a great way to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of this campus, if we start construction next year.”

INTERNATIONAL TUITION & REZ FEES TO RISE IN 2015 Incoming international student tuition is proposed to increase 10% in 2015, while residence costs are to increase by 20% This tuition increase will not affect students already enrolled in classes Mark Dreger Contributor

The reason behind the tuition increase is to build UBC’s reputation. According to VP Students, Louise Cowin, the tuition increase will increase UBC’s reputation and make the institution more attractive to international students, such as more expensive institutions like McGill

and the University of Toronto. Although UBC may believe increased tuition will make their university more attractive, students have never responded happily to tuition increases. In February 2013, UBC’s YouTube account posted a video of proposed tuition increases for the 2013/14 school year. Despite UBC’s explanation for the use of the money, the video still received a 79% dislike rating. On October 14, 2014, several hundred students on the UBC campus showed their displeasure at the proposed cost increases. Students are upset that the fees were approved without any student consultation, which Ivan Leonce, of Colour Connected Against Racism, stated as being undemocratic. These increases should give the university an additional $10 million in the first year,

so students’ main concern is where their money is going, but UBC is yet to disclose that information. In addition to increased tuition, the cost of UBC housing will be increasing 20% in 2015. According to UBC’s Tuition and Residence Fee Increase Presentation, since 2009 both the University of Toronto and McGill have increased international tuition by 64% and 49% respectively, compared to 18% from UBC. The presentation shows UBC residence fees will be “significantly below” U of T and McGill, even after the increase. Tuition increases are not new to UBC students. In April of this year, the Board of Governors approved a 2% tuition increase for domestic undergraduate students and a 3% increase for international undergraduate student.

UBC DISCOVERS SOFTWARE BUG IN SSC UBC found and fixed a software bug that was in the SSC exposing students banking information The number of students affected by the bug is estimated to be between 40 to 60 students Alex Barberis News Editor On September 5 2014, UBC discovered and fixed a software bug that was found within the Student Services Centre (SSC) that exposed students’ personal banking information. Initially suspected to have been

created during a software update in November 2012, the bug had been dormant in the UBC system for two years, with the potential for affecting any students using the Electronic Transfer of Funds (EFT), between November 2012 and September 2014. The number of students affected by this bug was estimated to be between 40 to 60 students UBC-wide due to the nature of the bug. In order for students’ financials to have been disclosed, two students would have had to simultaneously be doing the exact same thing at the exact same time on the SSC. The bug was brought to the attention of UBC officials when two students noticed banking information other than their own after they had paid tuition through EFT. Any financial information that

would have been disclosed would be something similar to what you could find at the bottom of a check: branch number, transit number, and the account number. According to Kate Ross, UBC Registrar, only one student had money wrongly charged to their account as a result of the bug, and that all charges have been reversed. Ross declined to disclose the amount that the student was wrongly charged. “We’re really confident that now the system is safe”, said Ross. “We’ve taken the issue seriously, we’re alerting all affected students, we believe it’s a very small risk and the risk of the misuse of the information is very low.” As a precaution, UBC has been sending out mass emails to inform students of the bug.

Marijuana use has drawbacks —Who would have thought? alcohol addiction, and regular use increases the probability of developing symptoms of psychosis. The study has stirred up some controversy over the misrepresentation of marijuana addiction, amongst other premature conclusions. This academic review of marijuana studies over the past 20 years was initiated in 1993 by Wayne Hall, who is said to be associated with the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre. Many of the findings are still being debated and have no conclusive evidence, which suggests that we still have a long way to go before jumping on Hall’s anti-pot agenda. “There’s a lot of students who are going to get a notification, that in their case, maybe nothing happened. We’re saying it’s only one in a thousand students who that happened to who utilized the Electronic Funds Transfer,” said Ross. Ross stressed that the situation is not of a hacking nature, but of accidental disclosure, and the risk of the misuse of information is low. She also urged students to monitor their bank accounts and transactions on a regular basis. Ross is confident in the integrity of the SSC software, stating, “The risk is extremely low from everything that we’ve been able to ascertain. If it was me paying my tuition, I would do it this way”.

UBCO CELEBRATES INT’L DAY OF THE GIRL SARA celebrated UN’s International Day of the Girl on Oct 9 Event inspired dialogue about how we can end violence against women in the community Alex Barberis News Editor

On October 9, UBCO and SARA (Sexual Assault and Rape Awareness) celebrated the United Nation’s International Day of the Girl with an interactive photo booth and presentation engaging the student population on how they felt about

gender and equality, and how we as a community can end violence against women. “So what we’re trying to do here with SARA is bring people together”, said Jessica Sobstyl, SARA executive. “I understand it is the International Day of the Girl [and] we want to honour that title because it is a UN event, but it was so awesome just to see men and women come together [to celebrate].” The International Day of the Girl, usually celebrated on October 11, is a United Nations-created event meant to promote equality and education among women worldwide. The event is celebrated more prominently in Europe, where many countries choose to fundraise for the cause. Responses to the event, through conversation and dialogue, un-

earthed a thoughtful commentary on gender and equality, and shed some light on objectification occurring within our own backyard. “So apparently there are some nice gentlemen who are rating girls as they walk down the hill with numbers,” said Sobstyl. “Our director was walking down academy hill and some guy was like, “Hey blonde!” and showed her a number sign… how dehumanizing is that?” SARA continues to work to spread the message of understanding consent and healthy sexual activities throughout the year and in particular during SARA Week this coming January. “It’s not just a women’s thing. It’s a men’s thing and a women’s thing…so I feel like we still have a long way to go, and that’s why SARA’s here.“

PRAYERS, DREAMS, AND SPOKEN WORD Creative Writing professor Michael V. Smith headlines the Creative Writing Course Union’s Spoken Word Night at Pulp Fiction. Brittni MacKenzie-Dale Contributor

UBCO’s own professor Michael V. Smith headlined at Pulp Fiction’s October 17th Spoken Word night. Creative Writing Course Union president Jessica Bonney hosted the evening, bringing Smith up to the microphone to a big applause. Currently on sabbatical, Smith has been writing non-stop: his new memoir is to be finished by next month and out sometime next spring.

Filbert Cartoons Anthony Labonte Contributor

Pulp Fiction was crammed to its capacity, filled with people sipping warm, milky drinks and snacking on flaky desserts. While Smith didn’t read from his upcoming memoir, he did read from two series of poems: Prayers and Dreams. The former he read only two from, claiming that it was the weaker of the two sections (“dreams are better,” Smith insisted, “they’re more fucked up!”); the latter were collected approximately seven years ago from friends of his e-mailing him details of their dreams. The results were hilarious and surprisingly cohesive. Smith is always enchanting and so the readings of these sex-filled dreams were made all the better with his captivating voice—he even managed to make a dream about orgies sound somehow ethereal. At ease with both the mic and performing in front of an audience, Smith both moved the crowd and had

them howling with laughter. After a brief intermission following Smith, the microphone opened up for the public. UBCO student Aimee Miller kicked it off fantastically; others who read included Lauren Marshall, Bonney, Lyndsay Thornton, Chloe Elliot, and Christin O’Brien. The Phoenix’s arts editor Jeff Bulmer was also in attendance and broke the poetry mold by reading a short fiction piece of his. Joe Welton entertained the crowd with a self-described “Game of Thrones accent” as he read his poems aloud. Spoken Word seems to be continuously growing in both audience and reader volume. The night was a big success, as evidenced by the lack of sitting room. Stay tuned to the Phoenix News for info on the Creative Writing Course Union’s next Spoken Word Night!

Most people struggle with their appearance at some point in their lives. It’s not a fun or healthy experience, and many spend copious amounts of time working out, overcoming eating disorders, or simply being uncomfortable with themselves. That’s why it’s all the more surprising when dedicated actors willingly gain or lose a dramatic amount of weight just for a role—it might seem silly or extreme, but the results typically pay off. Let’s take a look at some of the most iconic instances of actors distorting themselves for a character.

With outstanding acting from Banderas as a troubled, yet clearly insane plastic surgeon, Skin is a refreshingly gruesome character-study for any classic thriller fan.

I imagine dark hospital rooms while being fed through tubes. But I needed someone to help me, someone to stop me. Body image is something that we all deal with at one point in our lives or another; if not now, then during puberty, or later on in life. We all have a period of time where our bodies are just not how we remember them, or want them to be. The media demand that men be 6 feet tall, with washboard abs, and a chiseled jaw, and women’s bodies are described as different pieces of fruit or food, like apples, pears, or my favourite, the muffin top. Personally, out of all the options I’d like to be a chocolate chip muffin top – who doesn’t want to be the best part of someone’s morning? Let’s face it, how you see your body has a direct correlation on how you feel and act in the world around you. How well you participate in class, or how it affects life outside of school. When the way you see your body begins to control every aspect of your life, that is when there is a problem. I cannot begin to explain what made me think of purging for the first time; all I remember is that it felt like the only way to have some sort of control over my image.

Kelsi’s story

When I was six, I was lying on my mom’s tummy for a cuddle, and at that point in her life, she still had her baby weight from me. I looked at her and told her that her tummy was the best for lying on because it felt just like a pillow. Now, at six, I believed that this was a compliment – who wouldn’t want to walk around with a pillow for a tummy? But when I saw the quick hurt in my mom’s eyes, she explained that mommy still hadn’t lost all her weight from having me, and that she needed to be thinner. That having a pillow tummy wasn’t such a great thing. I was six years old when I learned that thinner was “better.” At the age of 15, fresh out of puberty, I had boobs and that was all I cared about. My confidence in myself was sky-high, now that I had a decent set, what else was there to worry about? I thought I looked incredible. Until the person who I believed to be my best friend started calling me names like “fatty”. I can only guess it was meant to be a term of endearment, and I shrugged it off at the time. I ended up shrugging off that word for years. But every single continued on next pg

time she referenced my weight, or went as far as to comment on my eating habits, in any negative light, it slowly started to eat away at me. Eventually, when I was 17 (still in high school), I was completely ashamed of my body. I was so ashamed, to the point where if I had to eat in public, with any kind of food that wasn’t deemed healthy, I had anxiety about what people were thinking about me—did they think I was a “fatty” also? Were they judging my body, or what I was putting into it? That’s when I really started to watch what I was eating. I was so scared that if I ate anything, it would give someone else a reason to call me fat. In September of 2009, fresh out of high school, suddenly my body grew in a way that I wasn’t accustomed to. I went from my “normal” 135 lbs for my 5’11 frame, to 150 lbs. I was still within what a doctor would call a healthy weight range, or my height class’s BMI (body mass index), but I was horrified and embarrassed. It was like my (now ex) best friend’s heckling had taken on a life of its own. Waking up in the morning, I would have thirty seconds of peace until I remembered what my body actually looked like. I felt like I needed to cut all the fat off of my body with a knife, all because I couldn’t control the numbers on the scale. This was when I created my daily routine. Starve all day, binge on food in the afternoon, purge, and then run for two hours in the evening. Amidst this, I was consuming large amounts of media

“Recovering from an eating disorder isn’t something that can be done quickly”

like posts from Perez Hilton, monthly copies of People Style Watch, and idolizing the actors from my favourite TV shows like The Vampire Diaries or The Hills. And I was devouring all of this without a critical gaze; I didn’t pause to think about airbrushing, makeup, Spanx, personal trainers, crash diets, and how typically, it was within the contracts of these celebrities to look as fit as they did. That was my life; obsessing over my own body, and the bodies of others, and mistreating my body and lying about it, not only to my family, but to myself as well. Finally, on one particularly bad night, I got off the bathroom floor from in front of the toilet, and it was like I could see my life stretching out before me in two separate paths. Down one was binging and purging, and ending up either hospitalized or dead, and the other was ‘fessing up, telling at least one person, and hopefully moving on and recovering. Both were equally terrifying. I knew I couldn’t continue on like I had been, but I didn’t know if I could accept the way my body looked. I’ve been in recovery now for three long years, with four relapses. Within that time, I have relied heavily on every single member of my family to aid me in getting better. Running into my sister’s bedroom three years ago asking her for help changed my life. Looking back on my experience and telling my story has been painful. There are still days when it feels inevitable that I’ll relapse, that I’ll constantly be in a state

of recovery. Recovering from an eating disorder isn’t something that can be done quickly. I may struggle with this for the rest of my life. But for everyday when I wake up, look in the mirror, and feel proud of my body, proud of how far I’ve come, that’s one less day of the misery that I don’t ever want to go back to.

Social Media

Our lives are surrounded by social media, it’s in our pockets, on our laps, it’s always right in front of us buzzing away. This generation is obsessed with all things media; a night out means a new profile pic, a long day at school or work means a night of binging on all things internet. In Meaghan Ramsey’s TED talk “Why thinking you’re ugly is bad for you,” she stresses the ramifications of being “always on” in our connected internet environments. From Facebook, to Instagram, to Twitter, to Tumblr, our online lives are just as exponential as our ‘real’ lives. This is, Ramsey argues, where we go to validate our self worth. Are we pretty, fat, worthy? The hashtags that we come up with to connect with others who we hope are like-minded are horrendous. We’ll inundate our photos with #proana (pro anorexia), #thighgap, #bikinibridge, and even the Instagram-banned #thinspo (thin inspiration), whilst simultaneously

pretending that everything is fine, that we are healthy and not obsessive. But we are. Ramsey notes that every day, 10,000 people are asking Google “Am I ugly?” We are constantly searching for validation in likes, comments, follows, or reblogs about our appearances online, to the point where some of us have sick fascinations with grooming our online profiles and identities to assure ourselves that our body images are reflected positively in at least one place in our lives.

Freshman 15

We’ve all heard about the freshman fifteen—it’s big, and its scary, and honestly, it’s everything that you heard about in your last year of high school. Here’s the thing though – you just don’t know what’s going to happen to your body until it happens, and it might not even stop at fifteen! I’m here to tell you that while yes, it does exist and it does happen, it is nothing to be afraid of. When you break it down, the freshman fifteen is just a set of circumstances that leads to an eventual fluctuation in weight (for some). When entering university, your sleep cycle goes through a bunch of changes because` you party late, study later, and then get up early for class. It’s new and exciting, taking the time to feel out the whole

campus life experience. Then suddenly its midterms, and you’re up again anyway, but not so much for partying. Additionally, you are no longer eating three square meals a day, your mom’s not packing a lunch for you anymore, and now you have to make the choices for your own diet that would have otherwise been made for you. Pre-packaged food is good in a pinch, when the hungry student doesn’t have time to make it off campus to a grocery store, but “bad” food can change the way your body looks. Furthermore, entering into your first year of university is incredibly overwhelming, and this brand new level of stress takes a toll on the mind, and hence the body (because like it or not, the two are connected). High school simply does not prepare you at all for the realities of college and ‘real life’ adult scenarios. Even students in third and fourth year still get the freshmen fifteen every semester, to a degree. We go from working full time jobs and moving around all summer, to stationary hit-the-books life styles. Keep in mind that you’re leaving puberty behind and entering young adulthood, which is setting up how your body is going to be for the rest of your life. Your body’s natural weight is going to present itself, and this can be scary as well. Our metabolisms are slowing down as we get into our twenties, it’s a natural occurrence, but because of the stress we put on ourselves to look picture perfect, it can be hard to accept.

It’s not just girls “ They have to be lean, with chiseled jaws, and sexy washboard abs, and if they don’t have them or aren’t pursuing them, their masculinity is called into question.”

This is one more place that can clearly explain the truths and myths behind eating disorders and low self esteem. They even have a handy Wayfinder - just type in a city and resource pop up on a map. Most importantly they have a crisis line: 310-6789 www.keltyeatingdisorders.ca

Many men are affected by body image too, while also being expected to, as men, act as though nothing ever affects them. They have to be lean, with chiseled jaws, and sexy washboard abs, and if they don’t have them or aren’t pursuing them, their masculinity is called into question. Our social norms emphasize athleticism as a means of fitness for men—whether as a way to lose weight, or a way to keep the body fit. Professional athletes are idolized as gods of sports for their bodies and rugged manly personas. Men do all of this silently, without complaints, and thus, without help. If they ask for help, again, their manhood is doubted. Eating disorders impact men just as often as they impact women. But doctors are less likely to diagnose a man with an eating disorder, and early detection of an eating disorder in young men or boys is frequently overlooked. As well, men often are ashamed of eating disorders, considering it a women’s health problem, and are less likely to come forward for help. There is an enormous amount of blowback when the media tries to control how women’s bodies look, but there is less of a focus on how it impacts men. No matter who you are, body image can affect you. Kelsi’s advice for self-love is listed on the right, and resources to help you if you’re struggling are listed along the bottom of the page.

KELSI’S 9 COMMANDMENTS FOR SELF LOVE 1. Stand in front of a mirror and list off 10 things you love about you or your body. 2. Remind yourself that beauty and body image are up to you to perceive: you won’t always be someone’s kind of beautiful, but you should always be your own kind of beautiful. 3. Particularly bad day? Put on your favourite clothes or comfies. 4. Put on music and dance around to get the icky feelings out (it sounds silly, but it works!). 5. Surround yourself with positive people, and back away slowly from the people who make you feel bad, or partake in the normalization of constant body policing. 6. Do something good for yourself/pamper yourself! 7. Do something creative/something to keep yourself busy. 8. Stop the cycle of normalizing the hatred of your body and the bodies of others. 9. Talk about it! End the stigma of eating disorders and normalize your own body type.

Most importantly, if it ever seems too much and you feel like giving up call: 1 800 SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433). They have been operating since 2004 and are open 24/7/365. Always remember that you are not alone and there is help. 1800-784-2433 www.crisislines.bc.ca

As a result, I lost interest, and to wait until the Christmas holidays is just so cruel… So what am I saying here? Am I telling you to break-up with your high school honey? Yeah, kinda. GET PSYCHED FOR LOVE: THE SCIENCE BEHIND FALL ROMANCES Do you think it’s just coincidence many couples get together when the weather starts to drop? Study finds that loss of physical warmth in fall results in the desire for psychological warmth Jenna Smith Contributor It’s that time of year where summer has finally come to an end. Autumn proves to be the right time for love because we all want someone for those cold winter nights and to share the holidays with, meaning date nights are even better in the fall. A recent study conducted by researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology found that when the weather starts getting colder, our choice of movies starts to get warmer. Men and women are more likely to choose romantic comedies during the frigid months due to the connection between physical and psychological sensations. Feeling cold results

in the desire for warmth. Now this one will be a shocker, but those getting into bed together won’t complain: it turns out that autumn is the season of sex. Research shows that once the leaves start to change, our bodies know we’re about to get depressed (aka the winter blues). So as a result, our brains give us an extra boost of dopamine (one of the hormones for emotion) that causes romantic thoughts, butterflies in our stomachs, and lots of time between the sheets snuggling. We can now stop dreading the end of the exhilarating highs of summer and look forward to fall, where there’s a possibility of something even more magical to happen.

HOW TO BIND YOUR CHEST Whether you’re ftm trans, gender fluid, non-binary, or just feeling like changing your gender expression, chest binding is one way to dispel gender dysphoria or try on a new gender identity. Kayti Barkved Opinions Editor Remember that while you are binding, you are, in essence, compressing everything in, which can impact your chest cavity (and all the stuff inside it) and thus, your breathing. Binding should be limited to eight-hour periods (at the most) at a time, and most importantly, folks who like to bind fre-

quently must remember to take a day off every now and then. There can be long term repercussions associated with extended binding from pesky back pain and rashes, to extreme changes in spinal alignment, deformation of the ribs, and permanent damage to breast tissue. Even if you’re considering any sort of top surgery later on, over-binding now can lead to a more difficult surgery if your breast tissue, ribs, lungs, or spine are damaged. If you want to bind, you need to know your bra size—and don’t contemplate buying a size smaller to make the bind tighter, it is harmful to your body and will result in a poor fit. Binding on a budget The best cheapie for the binding initiate is control top panty hose with the legs cut off, or trimmed

and turned into a form of tank top straps. Men’s compression sports shirts made of Lycra or spandex (cis men with Gynecomastia use these) are a little less expensive for the experienced experimenter, and can work for smaller- to mediumsized chests. These can be found at sporting goods stores, or even at Walmart. For bigger chest sizes, back braces found at drug stores turned and fastened backwards can be a great alternative. The only downside is that the neoprene fabric that they are made out of isn’t very breathable. A moisture wicking shirt underneath this can cut down on wetness. . Binding as a long term investment The best binders are made specifically by trans conscious companies like Underworks – they have a

fantastic online selection of full torso-length binders, like the community favourite, the Ultimate Chest Binder Tank, for about $30. Other companies, like Taiwan’s Esha, offer colourful cropped binders with zipper, Velcro, and pull-over styles. If you’re looking to inform yourself even more before you purchase, check out chestbinders.wordpress. com—they have many informative reviews (often with pictures) on the various binders out there. Binder beware •Know your bra size and don’t buy smaller sizes to make the bind tighter–it can lead to injury and will result in a poor fit. •The best way to put on a binder is to step into it inside out and ease it up over the hips before pulling it on over the chest. Nipples should be rearranged, pushed out towards

the armpit to get rid of the ‘monoboob’ effect. •Lady Gaga may have popularized this with her drag persona, but please do not use ACE (tensor) bandages to bind! They chafe the skin terribly and can compress and hurt breast tissue, and potentially fracture a rib, even from just one use if they are wound too tightly around the chest. •Cheaper binders can be found on eBay, sold for five dollars or less. This might sound appealing, but these too are more than likely to cause harm. They are usually constructed entirely out of binding material, which has an all over compressing effect, much like ACE bandages. A true, proper binder has its binding material in the front, and a spandex or breathable material in the back.

Heat finally beat U of A

Heat women’s volleyball’s season opening win against Number 1 Alberta on the road was UBCO’s first win there in any sport, dating back to the Heat’s entry to the CIS in 2011.

A sixth overall finish

for second-year Heat golfer James Casorso for the season would see him lead all Heat golf players for the year. The Immaculata grad is already prepared to lead the team following the departure of Will Deck (see Athlete of the Week at left), who finished ninth overall.

Some preseason fire

for Jessica Jazdarehee, a third-year women’s basketball guard who ripped her opponents for a combined 32 points over the team’s opening preseason weekend on the road against the Trinity Western Spartans and UBC Thunderbirds.

the Heat women’s volleyball squad is aiming for the top of the CIS food chain. In preseason they were number 6 in CIS, but after beating the preseason number 1 Pandas, the Heat vaulted to number 5.

Fourth-year Surrey, BC, product Brianna Beamish was electric in the UBCO women’s volleyball season opener on the road in Alberta. She posted a game-high 21 kills to go along with 13 digs and two blocks as her team downed the top CIS squad in the nation 3-2. Down 2-1 with the game on the line deep in the fourth set, it was Beamish who hammered home a kill to take a 28-26 set win and force a fifth. The Heat would once again duke it out in a tight, point-for-point fight, but they would ultimately best the No. 1 Pandas 15-13. Ultimately, the Heat would split the weekend with Alberta. It is an impressive start for a squad hoping to make a return to the Canada West Final Four.

Alex Hill

Playing in his final PACWEST tournament as a member of the UBCO golf team, Will Deck put together a virtuoso performance to capture the final tournament of 2014, hosted by the Heat at the Okanagan Golf Club at Quail Ridge. Winning the tournament just one stroke ahead of teammate Nick Krystal, Deck led the Heat to a finish fifteen shots ahead of Camosun to also capture the team title. Unfortunately, the Heat would not go on to qualify for the national championships in Quebec as they were not able to overcome a costly shot deficit accumulated earlier in the season. Wrapping up his career, Deck leaves UBCO with three national championships. His best season finish was seventh overall in the country at the 2012 CCAA Championships.

It’s a crisp and cold Saskatchewan morning 15 years ago, and young Justin Nillson can be seen repeatedly and strategically sliding a stone over the hard ice where he crouches. The strategic throwing of this stone, curling, has been a lifelong passion of Justin’s since those cold Saskatchewan mornings on the ice, and a life choice since his first ‘bonspiel’ (tournament) at 8 years old. I say a life choice because, like any dedi-

ed in the relationships built between the 4 players on the team, relationships built via essential communication and trust. Another aspect of the sport adored by its players is strategy, which is why it’s christened by many as “chess on ice”. This is especially true of Justin, who holds the most strategic position: the skip. The skip is the captain of the team and holds the ‘broom’ in the house (the target area) to indicate where the teammate at the other end of the curling sheet (playing area) should aim the stone. Additionally, the skip throws the final two stones in the game. Therefore, during the game, the skip experiences the most pressure—pressure that Justin thrives under. Whilst certainly a game populated by skilled and dedicated athletes, Justin stresses that it is accessible to us all. In the words of Justin, ‘if you can lunge,

WHY MANAGEMENT NEEDS FEMINISM Misconceptions about feminism are especially harmful in a field already dominated by men Educating people on gender equality would foster equality and safety on campus and in workplaces Kelly Taverner Contributor Unfortunately, there are many people who think this is true: that gender equality exists and feminism isn’t needed anymore. This type of ignorance is far too common and it is perpetuated everywhere—including our campus. I often find that my identity as a Management student contradicts my identity as a femi-

nist. I am consistently shocked by how few people understand what feminism is and why it is needed. So what is feminism? I think bell hooks puts it best with the definition “feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression”. Essentially, feminism is the belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. Now do these definitions include anything about man-hating, lesbianism, short hair, or poor hygiene? No of course not, because feminism has nothing to do with any of those things, but yet I’ve legitimately been told I should cut my hair short and been seriously asked if feminists really don’t shave their armpits. These stereotypes are why women fear being associated with feminism. Frankly though, even if the stereotype ‘fits’ and a woman is a lesbian, cuts her hair short, and/or

doesn’t shave, what does that have to do with fighting for equality? Absolutely nothing. The negative connotations attached to feminism are extremely problematic because there is still so much work that needs to be done to achieve gender equality. So how do we fight back against these tropes and biases that attempt to shut down the dialogue about our movement? I believe the answer is education. Men and women need to be educated on feminism and the importance of gender equality in order to let go of their distorted views of these concepts. Education on feminism and gender equality is particularly necessary in male-dominated faculties like management. Seeing girls shy away from participating in all-female groups because we associate good business with manliness is problematic. Having

in-class debates about men needing their own movement to stand up against feminism is problematic. Being told that feminism (and I quote) “creates a divide in society, making it an ‘us’ and ‘them’ issue” is problematic. These are just a few of the things I’ve heard this year that make my skin crawl. Management needs feminism because we want the men of the UBCO Management Faculty to respect the women in their jobs and in their lives and treat them as equals. Management needs feminism because we want the women of the UBCO Management Faculty to be strong, empowered, and treated fairly. And ultimately, Management needs feminism because we want UBCO to be a safe environment that facilitates equality and celebrates difference.

MS WINTLE’S CAMPUS MANNERS

“Stay in your seat!” Laurne Wintle Head Copy Editor

Wylie’s campus vs. Ross’s campus Photo by Kelsi Barkved

ROSS’S ENROLMENT REBUTTAL MISTAKEN The next installment of rebuttals concerning student enrolment numbers Peter Wylie Associate Professor,

Economics, UBCO

Contrary to what [AVP Enrolment Services and Registrar Kate] Ross claims, in my Sept. 25 opinion piece “UBCO’s enrolment falls short this year,” I cite an actual shortfall of 450 domestic undergraduate program students in early September (about 400 FTE) below [UBC] projections of last March, not an expected one; that is, these are actual, not projected numbers, and come out of Kate’s office, so I can only assume they are accurate. These numbers have gone down slightly since I cited them, so I will be interested to see how this will translate to only a 120 FTE

shortfall once final numbers are in. Ross claims, “The provincial grant is not affected by changes in student numbers.” This cannot possibly be true, and if it was—that the total provincial grant to UBCO does not depend on how many students it enrolls—as a BC taxpayer, I would be extremely concerned. Ross further claims that UBCO is seeing “rising demand for professional programs—in health, engineering, and management—and fewer students choosing arts and sciences.” Total health and management enrolments at UBCO are down this year over last, engineering is up. Sciences are up 25% over the last 3 years. Domestic student 1st-year “new to program” entry to BA this year is even lower (354) than the target/forecast of 430 (the entry number last year on which the “projection” for this year was based), which

was itself much reduced from actual entry in previous years (563 in 2012 and 646 in 2011). So it has fallen continuously and below “projection” by about 100 students a year since 2011, or by 300 overall (almost in half). At UBC Vancouver the arts and humanities are extremely healthy and growing, and overall 1st year new to program entry into the BA has risen steadily since 2011. With UBCO at its domestic student funding cap (as it was last year, and the year before that, and expected to be so this year), the only way it can grow domestic students in any undergraduate program further is to contract in others. Is the BA being slowly wound up and phased out at UBCO to make room for other programs? Finally, I suspect the Registrar has perhaps never seen our lineups at Tim Horton’s otherwise she would not characterize them as “manageable.”

It generally takes about a few weeks to sort out who is in each class, who will actually be showing up, and who likes to sit where. After these few weeks, people find their preferred regular seating, and they tend to get very territorial over their chosen perch. So woe betide the unfortunate soul who chooses to deliberately go against the unofficial seating arrangement. You will find yourself the target of a (deserving) glare, and there may be passive-aggressive actions made against you. For some students, their seats are chosen based on social factors. They want to be near their friends. For some, they like the back row, for sneaky facebook stalking during lectures. And for some of your neuroatypical classmates, like myself; we choose our seats carefully based upon a variety of factors, such as proximity to an exit or a seat that enables us to focus and not get distracted. The reasons for a particular seat choice are different for everyone. So please, do consider this wide variety of factors before you choose to sit in a different seat just to switch it up a bit. You may earn yourself the ire of that particular classmate, who has been sitting there all term so far for his or her own valid reasons. Seen any nasty manners for Ms Wintle to tackle?
