WELCOME Creativity and imagination meet technical rigour and real-world practicality at UBC Okanagan’s School of Engineering.

Located in the city of Kelowna in BC’s beautiful Okanagan Valley, we draw on more than 100 years of UBC Engineering excellence. Our dedicated team of internationally renowned faculty and staff guides inquiring minds through education and training, and prepares them for rewarding careers.

The School’s diverse student body includes undergraduates immersed in “design from the start” project-based learning, while graduate students pursue opportunities for hands-on research and professional development. At all levels of learning, students engage in reflection, build intercultural aptitudes, and enrich their intellectual and social lives.

Our research projects contribute to local and global communities and industries by responding to their needs and helping to shape their development.

For example, we create unmanned aerial vehicles and software for sensing and exploration. We manufacture and test smart materials to create stronger, safer and more sustainable infrastructure. We develop innovative, lifecycle-based tools to study complex interactions between built and natural environments.

We synthesize research in photonics and wireless communication. And we construct microsystem technologies to test for disease, analyze chemicals and improve fuel cells.

The School of Engineering is committed to excellence in stewardship, giving students opportunities to understand and apply sustainable and ethical practices, and to develop lifelong learning skills. Through community outreach programs such as Go ENG Girl, we promote gender equality and inclusion, and we are working to integrate First Nations’ knowledge and perspectives in our curriculum.

ENGINEERING IN THE OKANAGAN Today’s engineers work in teams to solve a vast array of complex problems. They must draw upon a set of broad fundamental engineering skills, including communications.

UBC’s School of Engineering at the Okanagan campus offers a unique and innovative curriculum to prepare students for graduate studies and engineering practice.

School of Engineering students have embraced UBC traditions while giving the Reds, the competitions, and even the E their own spin.

“Having met with some faculty and students, I was impressed by their enthusiasm and drive to not only tackle long-standing problems in traditional ways, but to take on emerging challenges in unconventional ways. The stylized red E has been iconic for decades, starting in 1966 when UBC students used a small cairn of rocks and cement to create the university’s first monument to engineering on the Vancouver campus.

On the Okanagan campus, first came the Okanagan Reds—an Engineering Undergraduate Society jacket similar to the Vancouver style, but with white sleeves—and then came the giant red E.

Mysteriously erected overnight in 2007, the seven-foot Okanagan E stands larger than life on the Okanagan campus.

Here you will begin first year with math and science courses, taught by engineering professors to directly and immediately link fundamentals and practical applications. Students work in teams on design projects using our design-from-the-start approach to highlight engineering practice and sustainability in all years of study.

Our goal is to create well-rounded engineers prepared for the realities and demands of the modern workplace.

Students acquire a broad understanding of engineering principles within Applied Sciences (APSC) before selecting one of three Engineering (ENGR) programs: Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering. All lead to a Bachelor of Applied Science degree.

Course content is amplified through lectures, hands-on laboratory work in cutting-edge facilities, team-based projects and early design experience. You will also be immersed in active industry and community involvement.

School of Engineering students have taken it upon themselves to give back through competitions and pranks. In 2012, Ogopogo (wearing an E) left a trunkful of donations for the Salvation Army during E Week. A note inside challenged local businesses and members of the community to match Ogopogo’s gift and perform helpful deeds.

Engineering students have also swapped vowels in the city’s former welcome sign.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Mechanical engineering is at the crossroad of other engineering disciplines. It shapes a practical, handson way of creating and improving physical systems.

If you are a “big idea” person with the drive to take a concept through design, analysis and prototyping—then mechanical engineering could be where you belong.

The interdisciplinary nature of the School of Engineering at UBC’s Okanagan campus provides an ideal environment for training mechanical engineers with exceptional skills to meet the demand of modern industries, from aircraft and energy systems to biomedical, mechatronics and manufacturing.

As a mechanical engineering student at the School of Engineering, you will begin by mastering the fundamentals, building a knowledge base in solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, vibrations, heat transfer and control.

Then you will put your knowledge into practice, starting from day one in numerous projects planned by experts to build your design skills.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Powerful, mysterious and invisible—electricity offers a dynamic career path for engineering students who want to be part of global solutions for energy conservation, power grids, communications networks, and intelligent products.

As an electrical engineering student at UBC’s Okanagan campus, you will have the opportunity to study modern topics in electrical engineering—including communications, electromagnetics, microsystems, nanotechnology, power systems, and electronics—with the focus of your program being tailored to your own expertise and interests.

You will have an opportunity to build analog and digital integrated circuits, develop wireless systems, fabricate micro- and nano-devices, and design new forms of power and data networks.

The hands-on training and experience that you receive will prepare you for a career at the cutting edge of these, and many other, technologies.

Choose to pursue a minor in Computer Science or Management.

FOUNDATION DESIGN FROM THE START The path to a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree begins at the School of Engineering with Engineering Year 1 and Year 2— foundation years rooted in project-based team learning.

With this foundational learning model at UBC’s Okanagan campus —distinct among Canadian universities—students focus on integrated and multidisciplinary engineering courses.

CO-OP QUALITY “We have employed graduated engineers and engineering co-op students as assistant project coordinators. To date we have provided over 60 co-op work term opportunities through our Kelowna office alone, and we’re impressed with the quality and dedication of UBC and UBC Okanagan students and faculty.”

The Year 1 curriculum lays engineering skill foundations, and offers first-year students an opportunity to implement engineering design projects. The common learning format provides all students with more interdisciplinary approaches to engineering education, which strengthens design teams and their projects.

First-year engineering design projects include 3-D printing, computer-aided design, and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), and the opportunity to implement the principles of engineering in a second-term design project.

The Year 2 program builds on foundation courses while expanding into engineering specializations. It culminates in the Hovercraft Competition, which incorporates elements such as electronics, magnetism, statics, dynamics, fluid flow and materials.

With a solid foundation, students choose a specific concentration: Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. You choose which discipline to enter. There are no quotas or caps on these programs at UBC Okanagan.

ENGINEERING CO-OP Earn while you learn. Gain valuable professional experience via the Engineering Co-operative Education Program by working in BC, across Canada, or around the world.

Completing a Co-op work term abroad allows you to gain international insight while developing technical skills, industry networks, and mentoring opportunities with professionals.

Co-op is an option available to students of any citizenship, in all of the engineering disciplines, both undergraduate and at the Master’s level.

SPECIALIZATION It’s your choice. Students choose their own concentration—Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering.

The third-year program at the School of Engineering continues to integrate projectbased learning in coursework and in-class team projects.

The design-from-the-start approach at UBC Okanagan continues through to the Engineering Capstone Design Project in fourth year—a collaboration with our industry partners. Innovative capstone design projects have led to potential entrepreneurial opportunities.

An interdisciplinary Capstone Design Project is a major component of any engineering curriculum. It is the culmination of a course of study enabling you to: • Showcase the knowledge and the skills you have acquired during the previous three years; • Design a product or service of significance; • Solve an open-ended engineering problem.

• Students who have completed first-year Engineering at a college offering a UBC transfer program are eligible to be considered for admission to second-year Engineering.

• Students with a two-year diploma in Civil, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering Technology from Okanagan College may be admitted to the second year of the B.A.Sc. program upon successful completion of the corresponding Okanagan College Engineering Bridge program.

• Students with a two-year diploma in Civil or Mechanical Technology may be admitted to the third year of the B.A.Sc. program in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering upon successful completion of an Engineering Bridge program offered

by Camosun College.

• Students are eligible to be considered for admission if they have completed an appropriate two-year technology diploma program with an overall average of at least 70%.

VANTAGE COLLEGE Vantage College is a UBC faculty that provides a transitional program to international students who excel academically but have not achieved the English scores needed for UBC acceptance.

RESOURCES UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH The School of Engineering emphasizes the development of critical thinking skills by involving undergraduate students in research.

As an undergraduate student, alumnus Samuel Schaefer (MASc 2014, BASc 2012) began developing a water-quality testing device using discarded CD players. Program integration can be seen through many research endeavours, including alternative materials for high-power electrical energy conversion, microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems, robotic and unmanned systems, water and environmental systems, optical wireless networks, and advanced seismic, composite, and metallic materials for structural applications.

Facilities and capabilities at UBC’s Okanagan campus investigate myriad aspects in engineering disciplines, from mechatronics and metalcasting, to customized laser micro-optics, concrete fidelity, and heart-valve performance.

Applied science extends to forensics, agriculture, forestry, mineral exploration, biofuel development, and manufacturing. One strong area of research within the School of Engineering concerns water— the chemical compound that covers 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface and is vital for all known forms of life.

Big things are happening on a small scale, too.

For instance, the Micro Electro Mechanical System facility employs chemistry, light, and laser technologies to fabricate and experiment on devices and systems. Fields such as optics and microfluidics, along with technologies such as scanning electron microscopy and X-ray tomography, enable School of Engineering professors to study microsystems with real-life applications.

CIVIL ENGINEERING RESEARCH The Civil Engineering research program is engaged with multiple industrial sectors, including core public infrastructure, mining, oil and gas, health, power, and building construction.

The program explores diverse research themes in the following areas: • Water and environment • Infrastructure management • Construction materials and structural engineering • Transportation engineering and construction management • Geo-technical and rock engineering Civil Engineering research activities are carried out in facilities such as the Advanced Anaerobic Digestion Facility and Biological Solutions Laboratory, the Life-cycle Management Lab, and the High Head Lab for the creation, testing, and analysis of environmental and infrastructure projects.

These research activities take place in specialized environments equipped for simulating, fabricating, and testing new technologies.

The laboratory facilities support research in power electronics, lasers and optics, computer simulations, radio-frequency (RF) systems, micro- and nano-fabrication, wireless communications, and an assortment of other high-tech areas.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING RESEARCH Mechanical Engineering focuses on hands-on experiences with cutting-edge research and development projects to tackle realworld problems.

Our professors and students are making a difference in several key themes of the discipline including: • Materials and manufacturing: new ceramic and metallic materials, light-metal alloys, and textile composites; • Mechatronics and automation: sensors and actuators, unmanned vehicles and robotics; • Thermo-fluids: energy systems, clean energy, heat exchanger, hydraulic systems, aerodynamics, and microfluidics; • Biotechnology and biomedical engineering: lab-on-a-chip, tissue engineering, cell printing, cardiovascular prosthetics, and cellular and molecular biomechanics.

Equipped with a vast collection of state-of-the-art micro- and macro-fabrication facilities, and 2-D and 3-D microscopy, as well as powerful simulation, design, prototyping and testing tools and instruments, mechanical engineering research here is on par with the top universities in the world.

ENGINEERING GRADUATE STUDENTS SOCIETY Provides support and community to current engineering graduate students.

ENGINEERING SOCIETY Supports the social, academic, and professional interests of engineering students at UBC Okanagan.

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS A strong, interconnected community that challenges the status quo, and drives change in the development sector and beyond.

A host of extracurricular student groups provide fun, fellowship, and in many cases opportunities for creative collaborations that benefit university and career growth.

The EWB chapter at UBC Okanagan was started four years ago by a group of engineering students who wanted to create an outlet for students to gather and look at different global issues.

EWB students work in Canada, Malawi, Ghana, Uganda, and Zambia.

ALPHA OMEGA EPSILON A professional sorority for women in engineering and technical sciences. The Sisters of Alpha Omega Epsilon promote personal growth in the areas of friendship, academic support, leadership, and professionalism.

CANADIAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS This student chapter focuses on providing students with practical opportunities to understand and learn more about civil engineering applications and industries that relate to their current studies.

INSTITUTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS The world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

CANADIAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS A non-profit membership organization that facilitates networking, collaboration, skill development, knowledge sharing, and professional activities among its members.

MECHATRONICS CLUB Provides funding and education to members wishing to become involved in extracurricular projects related to mechanics and robotics.

CONCRETE TOBOGGAN The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is an annual Canadian undergraduate engineering competition hosted by a different university each year. The studentled Canadian tradition started in 1975; it is the oldest undergraduate engineering competition in Canada.

SIGMA PHI DELTA Attending to both the social and professional side of Engineering, this organization fosters brotherhood, camaraderie, leadership, and teamwork.

In 2015, UBC’s School of Engineering played host to more than 400 engineering students from across Canada. The five-day national engineering event took place Jan. 21-25, 2015 at regional landmarks such as Big White Ski Resort, Kelowna’s scenic downtown district, and UBC Okanagan.

UBCO MOTORSPORTS is a Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) team composed of dedicated UBC Okanagan students.

It fully designs and builds an open-wheeled Formula car over a period of four semesters, complying with the FSAE Rulebook. Team goals include competing annually in the international SAE Michigan and SAE Lincoln competitions.

NO LIMITATIONS “There are many ways to get involved—from social clubs to student organizations to teambased research projects. There are no limitations. Students have the freedom to follow their dreams and passions. They have opportunities to create lasting relationships with their professors and peers, which they will carry into the engineering profession.”

WOMEN IN ENGINEERING This council— dedicated to promoting social and professional development among all engineering students, not just women—is especially committed to helping young women succeed in the applied sciences. Another goal of Women in Engineering (WiE) is to support young women throughout their university career and prepare them with professional skills for what follows graduation.

SUSTAINABILITY The campus is situated within the First Nations territory of the Okanagan Nation, whose spirit of stewardship for the land is reflected in the university’s commitment to sustainability.

The Okanagan campus supports a population of 9,857 students, faculty and staff, and operations currently occupy 137,214 sq. m of building space. Measures to advance the campus towards carbon neutrality include managing aspects of energy and waste reduction, transportation, and resource conservation.
