EVENT PROGRAM 10:00 AM

Welcome to the 43rd Annual Volunteer Spirit Awards!

I’m thrilled to welcome each of you to this truly magical and inspirational morning.

We deeply appreciate all of this year’s winners and supporters and are honored to come together to celebrate our region’s amazing volunteers.

Volunteer New York! was founded over 70 years ago to mobilize our community to address our greatest challenges. And, throughout that time, we have continued to witness the incredible power of community to bring us together, even in the most challenging of times.

I think you will leave today inspired and reminded about the goodness of people. Today, and every day, Volunteer New York! is here to help you turn your good intentions into action. Join us on this journey to connect, serve, and grow. Let’s build a more vibrant, resilient, and equitable community - together.

Share the things you value & celebrate! @volunteerNYnow

Today, it is with tremendous pride, that the Board of Directors at Volunteer New York! honors Joseph D. Roberto with the 2023 Legacy Award.

During his time as Chairman, President and CEO of PCSB Bank, Joe established the PCSB Community Foundation, which has provided over $1.5 Million in grants and sponsorships to local nonprofit organizations including many in the room with you today, Volunteer New York! amongst them.

Joe’s commitment to community and volunteerism in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland Counties, both personally and professionally, has made a lasting impact. Congratulations Joe!

Volunteer New York! mobilizes our community to address its greatest challenges. Last year we supported over 300 nonprofits by inspiring 37,000 volunteers to contribute 388,000 hours of service. These efforts generated $13.7 million in value back to our community which is incredible by anyone’s standards.

Congratulations to all of our VSA Awardees. We are so thrilled to be celebrating our 43rd Annual Volunteer Spirit Awards with you. When you leave today, we trust you will be inspired to support our mission and to give your time and talents in support of our community. They are needed now more than ever.

Thank you all for joining us in our celebration of community and volunteerism.

EDUCATION & LITERACY AWARD

Ariana Barrios

Songcatchers

Presented by The Gallin Family

Ariana Barrios’ relationship with Songcatchers goes back so far, she can hardly remember a time without them in her life. The only child of a single mother from New Rochelle, Ariana started violin lessons at Songcatchers at the age of three and came back year after year. She worked her way through the program, gaining musical proficiency. By the time she was in middle school she gave back to the program by helping the younger students in their classes. She says that having to explain a musical technique to another student helps everyone. She explains, “I find that having to figure out the best way to explain something often helps me to learn the concept as well.”

Today Ariana is leading classes with students that are 3 years old, the same age that she was when she started the program. When asked how someone begins to teach a three year old what to do with a violin, she tells them to treat their violin as if it were a baby. “Be very, very gentle,” she tells them.

Currently Ariana plays the violin, piano, ukulele, and is learning the cello. As a senior at New Rochelle High School, Ariana is very busy. Besides her commitments to her students at Songcatchers, she’s a member of the Hispanic Culture Club, the Music Honor Society, and the Symphonic Orchestra. She is also a participant in New Rochelle High School’s award-winning performing and visual arts program, PAVE. She also volunteers her musical talents to accompany church services at St. Vito Parish in Mamaroneck.

Ariana notes that she used her experiences at Songcatchers as the basis for her college application essays. She is looking forward to majoring in music education in college.

Dean Gallea & Rachel Tieger

Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council

Presented by Con Edison

Some say the quickest way to get things done is to ask the busiest people you know to help. The Tarrytown community has just that in Dean Gallea and Rachel Tieger. This dynamic duo serve as the co-chairs of Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Committee (TEAC), an all-volunteer-led council that promotes ecological sustainability through public education. TEAC reflects the interests and talents of members promoting many different committees and projects.

Dean and Rachel are involved in an assortment of committees and projects in Tarrytown. They each devote between 20 and 30 hours a week to various volunteer efforts, and are known for their creativity and the passion that they bring to pressing conservation issues in Tarrytown. Their mantra for getting community members involved is to “give first, teach second, and then ask for help.”

Recently, they spearheaded an EnergySmart Homes Campaign with the goal of sharing information about geothermal energy, heat pumps, and insulation with area homeowners. They were awarded a specially-funded Sustainable Westchester grant and were instrumental in convincing the Village of Tarrytown to waive permitting fees for these clean energy projects.

Dean Gallea, who has lived in Tarrytown for more than 30 years, worked as an engineer and program leader for electronic product testing at Consumer Reports. Currently, he serves as the President of the Warner Library Board, a community board member of Tarrytown Music Hall, and a member of Scenic Hudson Trails, as well as other various roles.

Rachel Tieger worked for 25 years in the wholesale wine business and lived in a number of places before returning to her roots in the Hudson Valley. In addition to TEAC, she is a member of the board of TASH Farmers Market and is active with Democratic district leaders.

This past fall, Rachel cross-purposed her board activities when the TASH Farmers Market hosted the Tarrytown Eco-Fair. This event successfully brought together numerous community sustainability organizations and local businesses to educate, network, and share ideas.

SOCIAL ADVOCACY AWARD

Carlos Carpio

Ossining Padres Hispanos

Presented by Regeneron

Carlos understands well the challenges facing immigrants in the Hudson Valley because he was one himself. At the age of 21, Carlos left his hometown in Ecuador for a brighter future in the United States. He remembers very clearly the challenges and struggles that faced him and his young family, particularly in the early days of his immigration.

For many years, Carlos worked in the restaurant business. The hours were long and late, but he successfully worked his way up from dishwasher, to prep cook, to eventually managing several Westchester-area restaurants. The interpersonal skills and business experience that he gained by managing and supervising staff have proven to be invaluable in his work with Ossining Padres Hispanos. Carlos has since changed professions to spend more time with his family and was inspired by his daughter to volunteer.

Ossining Padres Hispanos (OPH) is a volunteer-run organization whose mission is to provide low-income individuals and families in the greater Ossining area the critical support and equitable opportunities that lead to increasing sense of self-sufficiency and financial stability for new immigrants and community members in need. Carlos has been involved with the organization since its inception in 2017.

It’s no surprise that Carlos is a very hands-on board member of Ossining Padres Hispanos. He helps manage the organization’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program, an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification program, Home Health Aide (HHA) training, and U.S. citizenship classes for immigrant populations. Carlos is especially passionate about working with immigrants from Ecuador and other Latin American countries. A portion of the clients are undocumented, and they can be understandably wary. Carlos builds bonds with everyone and he has the knack for asking just the right questions. He recognizes that the new arrival in January might need an extra winter jacket from the clothing drive, while those who are already employed might not require as much support as those who are still seeking jobs.

Carlos lives in Ossining alongside his wife of 35 years, Juana, and their two daughters: Jessica, a social worker and Emily, a school teacher.

RESILIENCY AWARD James Burton

Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley

When you speak with James Burton, it’s clear that he has a unique ability to connect with people over food. He recalls volunteering in a soup kitchen during his high school years, and his interest in food led to an associate degree in Culinary Arts and a Bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. Over the years, James embarked on career opportunities ranging from bartending, launching a Chipotle restaurant, and joining the management team that opened the acclaimed Bedford Post restaurant for owner and actor Richard Gere.

These days, his involvement in culinary arts takes on a special meaning when he cooks for the families at the Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley (RMHGHV). James provided guidance in the creation of the Chef for A Day program, which was designed to pair trained chefs with volunteers for a day of service at RMHGHV. James himself served as the first guest chef. Although admitting a personal preference for preparing hearty stews or Southwestern dishes, James’ go-to menu for this audience is often fried chicken and biscuits. He tells us it’s always a crowd-pleaser!

Perhaps even better than James’ Southern fried chicken is his understanding of what families need when they are coping with the stress of having a child in the hospital. “A warm home-cooked meal and a quiet word can be very important,” he says. Meals at RMHGHV are a reminder to pause and reflect all that has happened that day. Things are not rushed. Sometimes James just sits with these families in companionship.

Part of the reason that James is so adept at “reading the room” is that, 10 years ago, he and his wife came to Ronald McDonald House when they were coping with the premature birth of twin sons. James views his volunteer work over the last 10 years as simply payback for the days and nights he and his wife spent there. “I owe them everything. Ronald McDonald House saved my life and marriage during our darkest times.”

Today, James lives in Hopewell Junction with his wife, Julie Ann, and sons: Deskin, age 10 and Chayton, age 5.

QUALITY OF LIFE AWARD

Carolyn Van Ness

Hospice of Westchester

Presented by PCSB Community Foundation and PCSB Bank

Carolyn Van Ness is very clear about the paths she has traveled and what has shaped her professional life and her current volunteer interests. This defining decision came shortly after she graduated from nursing school in Connecticut.

“I realized very quickly,” she recalls, “that I didn’t really like being around sick people!” This led her to focus on more uplifting aspects of health and wellness for her career. Unfortunately, New York State restrictions at the time kept Carolyn from her dream of becoming a nurse midwife. In spite of this, Carolyn had a very busy 30-year career as a Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner at Open Door Family Medical Group, a neighborhood health care center in Ossining. She used a combination of holistic practices to achieve optimal physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

When she retired in 2016, Carolyn began volunteering at Hospice of Westchester as an office volunteer and “friendly visitor” to hospice patients and bereaved family members. After completing her Henry Fersko-Weiss training, Carolyn overcame her grad-school aversion and became a death doula or death midwife. She felt she had come full circle, and her early dream of being a midwife and helping women through one of life’s key transitional experiences had been reshaped to fit her current stage of life.

During the pandemic, Carolyn continued her conversations with patients and grieving families virtually. She says that it took a while to get used to having healing conversations on Zoom, but soon those barriers faded. Today she believes that she will always be doing some of her volunteering virtually. Carolyn created a “Widow to Widow” program at Hospice of Westchester, which provides a unique opportunity for an open and non-judgmental dialogue between women who have lost their partners with the goal of fostering a sense of healing and growth.

Carolyn is currently a member of the board of directors for Circle of Friends for the Dying, which opened the first comfort care home in the Hudson Valley area in Kingston in December 2022. She also participates as a group facilitator for a monthly virtual “Death Café” sponsored by Circle of Friends for the Dying, which helps provide information—and brings a sense of comfort—to any questions related to the final stages of life.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD

Sam Nadol

Reboot PC

Presented by PKF O’Connor Davies, LLP

Sometimes youthful curiosity and passion can lead to a real contribution in one’s community.

17-year-old Sam Nadol of Ossining readily admits that he’s always been the kind of kid who wanted to know how things worked. At some point during middle school, he convinced his mom to let him take apart an old computer that had been discarded by the family. Using a combination of YouTube videos and “mostly just messing around,” he taught himself PC technology. Now he can easily understand what needs to be fixed on a computer (for instance, funny sounds are often indicative of a broken hard drive).

To ramp up his passion, Sam solicited donations of used desktops, laptops, and parts to launch a computer repair shop in his home. Sam also began running ads on Craigslist offering the repaired computers for $25 each to underwrite the cost of buying replacement parts. This was all happening in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and it quickly became clear that people in Westchester County needed inexpensive computers— especially laptops—to help them stay in touch with their families, attend school, and apply for jobs.

To respond to this community need, Sam launched RebootPC, a small non-profit organization where locals can donate computers, make donations, or apply for a reconditioned computer on a first-come, first-served basis. Sam serves as his organization’s executive director.

RebootPC accepts computers in any condition, but Sam notes that old units from the 1980s are virtually impossible to fix, and he prefers PCs over Apple products (“They are just easier to repair”). Any gaming computers are repaired and sold on eBay to help defray the cost of new parts, and additional funding comes from private donations and a Hogg Grant from Hackley School. Sam estimates that he spends about six hours a week working on computers. As of today, he has repaired and donated more than 257 units and he even has a number counter on his website to help encourage donations.

Sam lives in Ossining with his mother and his brothers, Jake and Joey. Reboot PC truly is a family affair where everyone pitches in, whether it’s responding to emails or serving as board members. Sam is currently a junior at Hackley School where he is a member of the fencing team. He is already thinking about what will become of RebootPC when he heads off to college. Sam tells us that if he has space in his dorm room, RebootPC will probably go with him!

Joseph D. Roberto

Presented by the Volunteer New York! Board of Directors

Joseph D. Roberto was chairman, president, and chief executive officer of PCSB Bank from 2012 to 2022. PCSB Bank is a $2 billion commercial bank headquartered in Westchester County, New York. Mr. Roberto’s expertise in banking and finance is built on a foundation of a professional banking career spanning more than 48 years in various financial management and executive positions for other financial institutions. Throughout his career, Mr. Roberto has demonstrated an ability to execute strategies to improve operations, increase profitability and successfully guide organizations through rapidly changing environments. Before joining PCSB Bank, Mr. Roberto began his career at Yonkers Savings and Loan Association and served as chief financial officer until its sale in 2002.

Mr. Roberto pledges that the charitable organization will continue to support life-changing organizations that have a profoundly positive impact on the daily lives of so many residents in the Lower Hudson Valley.

Mr. Roberto is actively involved in various organizations in both Putnam and Westchester Counties, currently serving on the boards of the Putnam Economic Development Committee, the Putnam Hospital Center Foundation, the Westchester County Association, the Boys and Girls Club of Mt.
