W

elcome to the 39th annual Volunteer Spirit Awards. We deeply appreciate that you have joined us this spring morning to celebrate truly wonderful volunteers whose purposeful actions help sustain a better, more caring community. For nearly 70 years, one nonprofit – Volunteer New York! – has worked to direct volunteer power to hundreds of nonprofits addressing critical needs in Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam. We are immensely grateful for your generosity to help sustain our mission. At Volunteer New York!, we value community and we value volunteerism. We believe everyone can serve. We believe volunteering is transformational. We believe relationships matter. We hope you see proof of this here today and you, too, are inspired to turn these beliefs into action. Join us! Connect. Serve. Grow. Alisa H. Kesten, Executive Director Volunteer New York!

T

oday, Volunteer New York! takes the opportunity to honor Albert D. (Doug) Rogers. For more than a decade Doug has been a beacon of support to Volunteer New York!. Recognized as a Leadership Westchester Alumnus of the Year, valued as a Board member, and appreciated as Board Chair, Doug is always there to roll up his sleeves and help. Last year, thanks to the dedication of the professional staff of Volunteer New York! and our own amazing volunteers, hundreds of non-profits benefited from more than 301,000 hours of service by over 23,000 volunteers. This volunteer force – represented by youth, seniors, families, and business professionals – has a value of $8.5 million to our community. When you leave today, we hope you will be inspired to make a difference. And please continue to support the work and mission of Volunteer New York! Michael Grossman, Board Chair Volunteer New York!

Founded and led for 30 years by physician-scientists, our unique ability to repeatedly and consistently translate science into medicine has led to seven FDA-approved treatments and numerous product candidates in development, all of which were homegrown in our laboratories. Our medicines and pipeline are designed to help patients with eye diseases, allergic and inflammatory diseases, cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, neuromuscular diseases, infectious diseases and rare diseases. Our purpose extends beyond our labs through our Corporate Citizenship efforts and commitment to “doing well by doing good, which guides our societal investments towards advancing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and strengthening communities where we operate. We are proud to have been named to the Civic50, as one of America’s most community-minded companies for the last two years. We are committed to fostering a continuous and more diversified pool of scientific talent through local and national STEM outreach and equity programs, including the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search. Our STEM efforts represent more than 90 percent of our citizenship investments; elevating public understanding of investing in STEM; inspiring, challenging and rewarding high-potential students in science research; and bridging opportunity gaps for students historically underrepresented in the sciences. Regeneron empowers our people to act on their passions to make a difference in the communities where they live and work. Through our giving programs, including corporate days of service as well as pro-bono/skills-based and employee-inspired volunteering activities year-round, our employees apply their talents and ideas towards meaningful social change. QUALITY OF LIFE AWARD

Barbara Jenkel

with Blip

Northern Westchester Hospital www.nwhc.net / Presented by Westchester Community Foundation

Barbara Jenkel has loved animals for as long as she can remember. Growing up in Winnetka, Illinois, she dreamed of being a veterinarian, but her parents didn’t find that to be a suitable career for a young woman. But some passions never go away, they just wait for the right moment to assert themselves. After moving to Chappaqua, Barbara started to volunteer and naturally sought opportunities to work with animals. She volunteered for 17 years at Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities (ECAD), located on the campus of The Children’s Village in Dobbs Ferry. To many people across Westchester, Barbara and her pet therapy dog, Blip, were a dynamic duo and they shared their talents with other local nonprofits. Together they have logged countless hours visiting patients at Northern Westchester Hospital, as well as the Bronx and Montrose VA hospitals. While Barbara believes that many dogs are naturally therapy dogs, it was clear that Blip had a knack for knowing what people of all ages wanted and needed from their time together. People commented that they never had a more peaceful moment than the time they spent with him. After a long life of volunteering, Blip recently passed away. Waiting for Blip’s grandson Tripp to join her in her rounds has given Barbara the time to remember their adventures together and reflect on how important volunteering has become in her life. She is ready and eager to introduce Tripp to many new friends and continue to bring that same sense of peace to others.

39 TH ANNUAL VOLUNTEER SPIRIT AWARDS

GOING GREEN AWARD

Filippine Hoogland Bedford2020 www.bedford2020.org / Presented by Con Edison

Filippine Hoogland pursues her far-reaching interests with boundless energy. Her skills and creativity have become interwoven in Bedford 2020, an initiative to consciously and strategically decrease the town’s carbon emissions by 20 percent and preserve its natural resources. In 2002, Filippine moved from Amsterdam to the New York area with her husband for his work. As their two sons grew and became more independent, she began thinking about what to do with her time. Volunteering was the obvious answer because she did not have the necessary papers, which limited her options to work in the United States. Her interest in gardening and landscaping led to the development of the Healthy Yards initiative, which promotes sustainable backyard gardening and has gained a national following online. Filippine used her sewing skills to develop a program to make reusable shopping bags from leftover fabric scraps to promote Bedford2020 and reduce reliance on single-use plastic grocery bags. One of Filippine’s most visible initiatives is the TIOLI shed at the Bedford train station. TIOLI, which stands for Take it or Leave it, offers a place to drop off unwanted household items for reuse by others. By bringing people and projects together and finding solutions, Filippine has contributed to improving her community and her planet. And she pays the Town of Bedford a wonderful compliment when she says, “If you have a sound idea in this community, they will do what they can to help to make it a reality.”

EDUCATION AND LITERACY AWARD

Bud Kroll Yonkers Partners In Education www.ypie.org / Presented by Ranger Ready Repellents

When Bud Kroll retired after over two fast-paced decades on Wall Street, he had a very clear idea of what he wanted to do with his time. One of his goals was to teach mathematics in an underserved community. As a volunteer, he put his passion into practice immediately, working first at a high school in Hell’s Kitchen, before shifting to schools closer to home in Westchester. Bud worked in conjunction with nonprofits Destination College and Lifting Up Westchester, before finding a strong connection with Yonkers Partners In Education (YPIE). He spent a year embedded in one of YPIE’s most challenging schools, working almost full time, and it inspired him to create an online math program called BudMath tailored to the New York State Regents exams. Bud also developed data systems to measure YPIE’s program outcomes and successes for all Yonkers high school students to help them as they apply for college. Since then, Bud has continued to design, build, execute and manage YPIE’s unique, state-of-the-art system, with unmatched passion, enthusiasm and dedication. As a member of the YPIE Board of Directors, he serves as a critical advocate, advisor and voice for the organization. Bud’s other retirement goal? He wanted to play jazz drums. You can catch him and the rest of the Sidetrack Jazz Band regularly at Moonlight on The Ave in Mamaroneck.

39 TH ANNUAL VOLUNTEER SPIRIT AWARDS

TRANSFORMATION AWARD

Angela Chan YAI www.yai.org / Presented by WMCHealth

Founded in 1957, YAI (Young Adult Institute, Inc.) is a network of agencies offering a comprehensive range of services to help children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities lead happy, full and productive lives. Hong Kong native Angela Chan is a part of the local YAI community day habilitation program. Her weekly schedule is vigorous and includes stops at the Westchester Conservatory of Music where she dusts the pianos, the SPCA of Briarcliff where she stuffs dog toys with peanut butter to help with dog training and various nonprofits, such as Student Advocacy, where she collates documents and stuffs envelopes for mailings. One of Angela’s favorite assignments is the Salvation Army’s summer camp where she works with children on activities ranging from art projects, to making pizzas, to working on reading skills. Whatever the project, Angela finds creative ways to make her activities stimulating and engaging to ensure the children have the best possible camp experience. Angela is a key member in YAI’s collaboration with the Volunteer New York! RISE program. Operating under the tagline “Inclusion elevates all,” RISE provides volunteer placement opportunities to young adults along with extra support to help them get the most out of the experience.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD

Chantal Loaiza Songcatchers www.songcatchers.org / Presented by PKF O’Connor Davies, LLP

For Chantal Loaiza, there was a certain inevitability to her going to Songcatchers. Her mom was already taking her older siblings to music classes there, and she enrolled Chantal in their popular Musikgarten program as soon as she turned three. It wasn’t long before Chantal started taking piano lessons, then guitar and flute in quick succession. Clearly Chantal found her passion and talent for music early. Chantal began volunteering at Songcatchers in middle school. At first, she helped at music enrichment summer camps and after-school programs. When she entered high school, she began a scholarship to study flute at Hoff-Barthelson Music School. But that did not stop her from volunteering at Songcatchers by giving flute and piano lessons to grade school children. Sister Beth Dowd, the founder of the organization, estimates that Chantal has spent more than 750 hours volunteering over the past five and a half years. Giving music lessons to children, even under the guidance of a professional mentor, is a challenge when you are a young person yourself. “At first I didn’t know if I would be comfortable telling someone what to do,” she recalls. “In the end, I find that it helps me learn while I help them learn.” And when Chantal sees her students gaining skills and confidence, it gives her joy. As senior at New Rochelle High School, Chantal is busy. Besides her commitments to her students at Songcatchers, she teaches religion classes at her parish, serves in a peer mentoring program, and is a member of the varsity swimming team. She is looking forward to majoring in music education in college.

39 TH ANNUAL VOLUNTEER SPIRIT AWARDS

SOCIAL ADVOCACY AWARD

John McQuade Housing Action Council www.housingactioncouncil.org / Presented by PCSB Bank

When Katonah resident John McQuade began volunteering during the financial crisis of 2008, he felt confident that the skills he had acquired during a long career as a financial officer for several New York construction companies could help people facing the possibility of home foreclosure. He connected with the Housing Action Council in Tarrytown, whose mission is to increase and improve housing opportunities for low and moderate-income households as well as special needs populations, including the homeless, elderly and disabled individuals throughout the Hudson Valley Region. As a volunteer Foreclosure Prevention Counselor at the Housing Action Council for the last decade, John has helped hundreds struggling homeowners to avoid foreclosure by assisting with loan modification applications and property sales and advocacy with the banks and in the court system. Despite volunteering in a field that has a lot of challenges and red tape, John approaches each case with a positive attitude. Above all, John is known for building partnerships with his clients based on honesty, dedication and persistence. Lessening stress and providing relief to worried homeowners bring great satisfaction to John. “I always feel as if I have accomplished something important just by helping people understand that we can help them work things out, he says.

#VOLSPIRIT19 2019 LEGACY AWARD

Albert D. (Doug) Rogers Albert D. (Doug) Rogers, Corporate Vice President at New York Life, was on a fast-track to impact Volunteer New York! and our mission since his first day in Leadership Westchester in 2008. He enrolled in the program to advance his career and help better connect New York Life and its Westchester-based employees with the local community, but it set him on a trajectory to do so much more. Immediately upon graduation from Leadership Westchester in 2009, Doug joined the Board of Volunteer New York!, and shortly after was elected to lead the organization as Board Chair. Part of Doug’s legacy is the calm, consistent and caring manner in which he helped expand the impact of Volunteer New York! from his seat on the Board and through his continued support over the years. In 2012, Doug was honored as the Leadership Westchester Alumnus of the Year for achievements based on his infectious belief in the transformative power of volunteerism. Doug has been with the New York Life for over 26 years. He began his career as a customer service associate and continued to rise through the ranks. He now manages day-to-day business operations for internal and external providers of corporate services at four of the company’s locations. His life though, has not been without turbulence. Doug has shown time and again the ability to overcome life’s most difficult challenges with grace, but never alone. Doug credits his faith and family for their crucial support. For over 17 years, Doug’s personal experiences have also driven his volunteer efforts with the First Baptist Church of South Orange. He was ordained as a Deacon in 2004 and is a member of the church’s Board of Elders. As a volunteer leader, Doug is involved in the church’s SHARE (Self-Help and Resources Exchange) program whereby individuals volunteer their time in exchange for healthy affordable food. He has served as a quiet role model to many and is an inspiration to us all. When asked by anyone what his life’s purpose is, Doug answers, “I want to become a beacon of light for those who need light.”

STILL WORKING FOR YOU UNTIL THE INDIAN POINT NUCLEAR PLANT POWERS DOWN IN 2021, WE’LL CONTINUE PRODUCING ABOUT 25 PERCENT OF THE ELECTRICITY FOR NEW YORK CITY AND WESTCHESTER COUNTY, WITH VIRTUALLY NO GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS.

The Indian Point Energy Center has been powering New York’s downstate region for about 40 years. Today, many New Yorkers have questions about the plant’s early and orderly shutdown — What will change? What will stay the same? For the next few years, much will stay the same. Until 2021, we’ll continue safely generating clean, reliable power round-the-clock for New York City and Westchester County. That power makes Indian Point the single largest source of clean electricity in New York State. Safety will continue to be the top priority for everyone at the plant. Under Entergy’s ownership, Indian Point has established a strong safety record that we’re committed to maintaining. Until shutdown in 2021, Indian Point will remain fully staffed with our team of approximately 1,000 nuclear professionals. We will continue to invest in the facility, and independent full-time inspectors from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will remain on-site to review operations. Indian Point will continue to generate significant tax revenues and expenditures in the local economy. We’ll also continue to play an important role in the wellbeing of our community through the contributions we provide to many charitable organizations in the region, as well as the thousands of hours our employees volunteer and donate to these important causes. At Indian Point, we’re still working for you, and it will continue to be an honor to operate one of New York’s cleanest and most reliable sources of electricity.
