SOCIAL ADVOCACY AWARD

Kenny Herzog #VaxUpWestchester Presented by Regeneron From an early age, Kenny has been interested in helping vulnerable populations. In high school, he organized punk rock shows and donated the proceeds to families facing food insecurity. He always felt compelled to help illuminate the needs of others and found a natural path to journalism to do just that. And with a BA in English from SUNY Albany with minors in Journalism and Communications, these skills would hold the key to his current passion of getting 100% of the population vaccinated for COVID-19. Kenny’s skills as a reporter, writer, and project leader for prestigious publications such as Rolling Stone, New York Magazine/Vulture, and Esquire were much in demand. Over the years, he found ways to use his time in support of neighborhood organizations like Volunteer New York! and the Make-A-Wish foundation by writing compelling profiles of people doing good. During the start of the pandemic and the rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations, he volunteered as a Greenburgh Covid Angel to help the elderly obtain vaccine appointments and the necessary transportation to get there. With appointments difficult to get and only booked online, he realized that poor public health communications significantly prevented many people from getting vaccinated. Kenny set out to improve communications and remove logistical hurdles from the process. Then as national vaccination campaigns became increasingly politicized, Kenny decided to change the messaging from persuasion to outreach. This nuance created an opportunity to build relationships in communities and with populations that showed resistance to becoming vaccinated. He used data to identify the most hesitant communities and enlisted community leaders to help build trust. His successes led to the formation of #VaxUpWestchester, which has helped to provide vaccine access and sound information to thousands of lower-income and minority population community members from Mount Vernon to Peekskill. Today as the Executive Director of #VaxUpWestchester, Kenny continues to strive for higher vaccination rates while working with various nonprofit and vaccinating partners across the county to facilitate vaccine popup events and educational clinics. EDUCATION & LITERACY AWARD

Deborah Disbrow Alzheimer’s Association Presented by Two’s Company Deborah Disbrow was raised by a kindergarten teacher and was always naturally curious. She studied Speech Education at Emerson College and received an M.S. in Environmental Science from City College. After a 37-year career as a science teacher in the South Bronx and Harlem and as an adjunct professor at City College, Lehman College, and Mercy College, she was determined to use her teaching skills to help those in need. Giving back to the community was a family expectation, she recalls. Her first memory of volunteering was as a candy striper at White Plains Hospital and later as a volunteer at the Bronx Zoo. Once retired, she found her calling at the Alzheimer’s Association while working in Hospice with patients afflicted with Alzheimer’s and dementia — prompting her to receive a graduate certificate in thanatology, the study of death, dying, counseling, and bereavement, from the College of New Rochelle. As an Alzheimer’s Association volunteer for the last ten years, her initial role was helping to provide entertainment and a social connection for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. Eventually, Deborah underwent training through the Alzheimer’s Association to become a community educator for caregivers and began focusing her time on improving the relationship between caregivers, patients, and their families. Her volunteer work would now include going to senior centers, churches, and libraries to present helpful information on topics ranging from stress and safety to family finances. Though the questions from worried caregivers can be endless, she answers each one with the same warmth, patience, and concern. “With greater knowledge, caregivers have a greater understanding. With greater understanding, they have greater compassion. And with greater compassion, they can have a meaningful relationship and connection for the rest of their patients’ lives.” Continuing to volunteer throughout the pandemic via Zoom, Deborah also notes how many meaningful interactions she saw develop remotely. Today Deborah lives in New Rochelle, where she finds time to relax and energize herself by dancing once a week with the Moving Arts Collaborative in Connecticut. AL Z .ORG/HUDSONVALLE Y

GOING GREEN AWARD

Susan O’Brien Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County Presented by Con Edison When Susan O’Brien needed to escape the stresses of her busy financial services career, she would garden and help things grow. When she eventually retired in 2016 her love for gardening had also grown, leading her to complete the extensive training required to become a Master Gardner through Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County (CCEP) and begin a new volunteer career. She recalls starting as a Master Gardener helpline volunteer – fielding calls from other gardeners with soil, pest, and horticulture questions. And while in this role, which sometimes required her to sift data and research various plants or insects, she discovered she could combine her green thumb with her analytical skills. Since then, Susan has averaged 897 hours of volunteer service a year supporting the CCEP, logging 3,071 volunteer hours in 2021 alone (or an average of almost 60 hours per week)! Recently, Susan’s volunteer work has come full circle – taking on a project to reduce the barriers that can keep others from completing the same Master Gardener training program she went through. Susan laboriously spent 2,940 hours overhauling the program and making it more accessible. Another major volunteer project that carries Susan’s green thumbprint is the Veterans’ Vegetable and Sensory Garden in Putnam. This private garden was designed with the help of her daughter, who herself is a Veteran, as a space for Veterans to grow their own vegetables and flowers and to have as a place to enjoy peacefully – resulting in the creation of not just a beautifully serene garden but a renewed sense of pride for the local Veterans in residence. “My parents taught me you should always give back.” Susan credits volunteering as an excellent way to meet new people – starting in her childhood as a Girl Scout and through the church. Today she continues to look for ways to use her skills to give back when not volunteering with CCEP. In recent years she has served as a local library volunteer, a RideConnect volunteer driver, and a Dominican Sisters of Sparkill computer volunteer. Susan also frequently makes return visits to the Veterans’ Vegetable and Sensory Garden to spend time with the Veterans there and help them organize social events. P U T N A M .C CE .C O R N E L L . RESILIENCY AWARD

Jolina & Brian Halloran Break The Hold Presented by WMCHealth Jolina and Brian Halloran never intended to devote their lives to the cause of suicide prevention. In 2018, when their 19-year-old son Brian lost his battle with depression, their lives changed forever. Overcome with the need to channel their grief, they created a foundation in honor of their son, dedicated to building resilience and reducing the risk of suicide through education, advocacy, and raising awareness about depression and other mental health challenges. They named it Break The Hold (BTH), to carry Brian Thomas Halloran’s initials forward while alluding to his love of football. After a mandate that all public schools in New York State provide mental health education, Jolina and Brian set out to create a BTH program that schools could use. In collaboration with Pleasantville High School and local psychologists, they created a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program called BTH 360 that teaches mindfulness strategies to manage emotions and increase students’ tolerance of negative emotions. Jolina and Brian believe that education is the key to prevention, supporting middle to high school age students and their parents through ongoing programs and community workshops. They advocate for “Recognizing and Referring,” which is a safety net program that teaches young people what to look for and how to help someone who is suffering. While BtH programs are part of the health curriculums in several Westchester County school districts, Jolina and Brian are determined to reach every school in the state. Often the only cost to the school is the nominal cost of certifying a teacher to become a BTH instructor. And those who reach out to BTH for help are connected to clinicians while receiving support to overcome any barriers to treatment, including medical costs. Today their annual Break the Hold “Into the Light” fundraising walk brings together hundreds of people who gather at 4:30 AM to walk as the sun comes up – symbols of walking out of the darkness and into the light. Volunteer New York! applauds Jolina and Brian’s goal of launching a BTH chapter in every New York school district and the resiliency they have shown in the face of tragedy.

QUALITY OF LIFE AWARD

Norman Handelman TRA (Formerly WestFair Rides) Presented by PCSB Bank You could say that Norman Handelman is a “driving force” in our community. Since 2017, Norman has been a volunteer driver with TRA (formerly WestFair Rides), which stands for Transportation, Resources, and Access, helping to provide medical transportation services for older adults and adults with disabilities in Westchester County and the region. Norm has completed over 500 volunteer rides in the last five years, putting 6,838 miles on the odometer and contributing 531 hours of his personal time to help individuals who might have otherwise foregone critical medical care. Norm was also one of the drivers to volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic, continuing to provide transport despite the increased risks. Stepping up wherever he could, Norm played a key role in helping TRA pivot their services during the pandemic by volunteering to deliver medications and groceries to the most vulnerable. In 2021 alone, Norm spent 175 hours driving 2,344 miles for TRA, providing over 130 rides. To those who rely on drivers like Norm to maintain their independence, the value of each ride is priceless. When not driving, Norm’s passion for community continues to show up for others. As a life-long lover of cats, he regularly volunteers at a pet rescue facility. On Sundays, he assists refugees at his church or teaches Sunday school. He makes calls and writes postcards during election season to support get-out-the-vote efforts. And as an avid TRA supporter, he is always quick to help the organization with volunteer recruitment and awareness campaigns. Norm’s TRA passengers describe him as friendly and caring, often calming their nerves through humor and compassion. Through his dedication to serving others in his community – one ride at a time – Norm demonstrates what a difference a human connection can make.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD

Harshita Shet India Center of Westchester Presented by PKF O’Connor Davies, LLP Harshita Shet is the living example of the old saying, if you want something done, ask the busiest person you know. Or, in this case, ask one of the most active seniors at Woodlands High School. Harshita is a three-season athlete who plays volleyball and basketball, runs track, and tutors children every Saturday at the Kumon Learning Center. She performs Indian Classical and Bollywood dancing at the India Center of Westchester and enjoys listening to music and playing it – as a pianist and flutist. And amazingly, over the past five years, she has also made time to be a community leader and women’s activist. In early 2018, Harshita created the “Feminine Dignity” campaign to help women and girls in need through awareness and by providing access to hygiene products. She launched her campaign county-wide by finding various locations to station hygiene product donation bins and by getting her flyers out into community members’ hands. To date, Harshita has collected over 20,000 hygiene products. And by partnering with local nonprofits My Sister’s Place, Hearts and Homes for Refugees, and Children’s Village, she has been able to get these supplies to local girls and women in need. Harshita recalls that volunteering has always been a family activity. “My parents have always encouraged me to give back to my community as much and as frequently as I can.” When she was only five years old, she went with her mother to put together clothing care kits for needy families and remembers jockeying to grab the cute girl socks so that she could include them in her care packages for others. Harshita also credits Volunteer New York! and the India Center for helping her to find new opportunities to make a difference and for helping her connect with other nonprofits. Like many high school seniors, Harshita is awaiting acceptance news from several universities. She plans to major in biology with the possibility of becoming a dentist – though fully intending to bring her volunteer spirit and her “Feminine Dignity” campaign with her to campus (and to remain purposefully busy). She is hoping to one day expand her campaign’s efforts to include supporting women and girls in NY correctional facilities and refugee camps around the world. INDIACENTER.US
