1. Know the issues The Township

Empowerment Initiative

Life is not easy in the townships of Port Elizabeth. The shadow of apartheid lingers. People must bear the burdens of HIV/AIDS, unemployment, poverty, discrimination, high infant mortality and sexual violence. Basic health care and education are hard to find. About 50,000 orphaned and vulnerable children live in this area.

HIV Prevention and Outreach through Household Stability •Home assessments •Childcare Committees for community members to do neighborhood outreach •Food packages •Financial planning •Family counseling •Bereavement counseling •Caregiver training •Support to navigate legal and bureaucratic systems

Clinical Care at the Ubuntu Centre • Comprehensive pediatric health clinic • Partnerships with local clinics, hospitals and practitioners • Regular clinical consultations • Vaccines • Pharmacy services • HIV and TB testing and treatment • Eye tests and glasses • Dental exams and treatment • Family planning and sexuality training • Interventions for HIV-positive pregnant women • Nutritious meals and weekend snack packs • Psychosocial support for entire families

Early Childhood Development Programs After-school programs for children in grades 8-12 Matriculation and college prep Tutoring School kits with necessary supplies Help with accessing government services, with academic support, college preparation and enrichment classes • Enrichment classes such as photography, dance, journalism • Visiting universities with potential applicants • Scholarship programs for university students

• Get your friends, colleagues, family, and peers motivated to participate in your event. • Use the Ubuntu logos and posters provided in the toolkit to publicize your event. • Use innovative means of donation, such as text donations, to make giving easy. • For text donations: text UBUNTU to 20222. Donors will receive a text confirming their $5.00 donation. Reply with YES and a one-time donation of $5.00 will be added to your mobile phone bill. Each donor may make donations via text up to five times per month.

4. Send a donation and get in touch We’d love to hear from you! Let us know about your fundraiser and send us a note - we may even put it on our website. Ubuntu Education Fund accepts donations in the form of Money Order, Cashier’s Check, or Personal Check payable to Ubuntu Education Fund.
