Op-ED: UBC’s relentless positivity is a disservice to students SEPTEMBER 15
After spending 14 of the last 16 years in a variety of roles within UBC Athletics, Tyler Kuntz has moved on. Kuntz, who was named head coach of the Thunderbirds men’s hockey team last year, resigned to be an assistant coach with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants. In his resignation letter he wrote, “Nobody should be treated with such ignorance and disrespect as my hockey program, players and staff were in the past two years … what I did not know is that we would be considered irrelevant to the university and its absent leadership.”
News editor Moira Warburton calls bullshit on Martha Piper’s (and the rest of the university’s) unending pep, or at least for it to be backed up by a dose of realism.

TUITION INCREASE ANNOUNCED OCTOBER 14 This year, tuition was raised by almost 50 per cent for international students at UBC over the next three years. Students fought hard to see that number lowered in many programs and it represented a significant success when Finance Committee Chair Greg Peet told university administrators to go back to the drawing table with their “benchmarking” process and better include students in that process.

STEVEN GALLOWAY SUSPENDED NOVEMBER 18 OVER-PRESCRIPTION OF OPIOIDS LINKED TO HIGHER DEATH RATES IN BC NOVEMBER 9 According to a study at UBC, the over-prescription of opioids — more commonly known as painkillers — has been linked to higher death rates in British Columbia. The study found that there is a significant variation in the prescribing of opioids in that regions with overall higher purchases had higher rates of opioid related deaths on average.
Despite that the investigation into allegations against Steven Galloway, the former chair of the creative writing department, was supposed to last 60 days, not a word has been spoken about why the famous writer departed. Criticism did crop up for his former publisher, Random House, which pledged its support to Galloway despite the lack of information regarding what the allegations were.

cbc reveals string of assaults november 20 A much-anticipated documentary by the CBC revealed a series of incidences within the history department at UBC. One PhD student was alleged to have sexually assaulted over four women while studying at UBC — at least one assault taking place in the graduate residence of Green College. Several women went on record with CBC to say that the university encouraged discretion and, in at least one case, that mediation between survivor and assaliant take place. In the wake of the scandal, UBC saw the need to develop a stand-alone sexual assault policy.

LEAKED FOIS REVEAL WHY GUPTA QUIT JANUARY 27 After months and months of speculation as to why Gupta resigned, UBC finally had no choice but to release the flood of freedom of information requests that had been delayed multiple times. For a day, little was uncovered. On January 27 however, the UBC community woke up to a shock — much of the redacted material could be seen by viewing it on a different program. Gupta, who had been radio silent since his resignation, did many interviews to dispel the picture of a poor president painted in the docs.

Faculty Association protests for board members to resign february 2 The Faculty Association has been particularly vocal since ex-President Gupta’s resignation. They have repeatedly called the Board of Governors out on its lack of transparency, its attacks on academic freedom and, most recently, passed a no-confidence motion in the ability of the board to govern. Although this doesn’t have an actual impact on the board’s legal position as governors of the university, it doesn’t bode well for the relationship between these two parties.

news
Divestment was brought to the board level by referendums held at student and faculty levels. Both voted overwhelmingly in favour of divesting university investments from all holdings in fossil fuels. However, the board declined to divest, saying it would be irresponsible and casting aside their fiduciary duty to do so. Instead they created the Sustainable Future Fund, which will invest only in sustainable ventures.
