LEADERS IN MEDICINE – BENCH TO BEDSIDE Leaders in Medicine is a combined graduate (master’s or PhD) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree program designed to develop future leaders in clinical and investigative medicine. About 15 per cent of MD students are enrolled in the program, one of the largest of its kind in Canada.

STARTING AT THE SYMPTOM As one of the few three-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in North America, the University of Calgary’s MD program is committed to patient-centred and presentationbased learning, which means a lot of early and ongoing exposure to real, standardized and simulated patients. Students receive instruction for about the same number of months as students in other MD programs, but the academic program does not include long summer breaks so students graduate in three years instead of four. Twenty-five per cent of all scheduled academic instruction is spent in small interactive group sessions, working alongside fellow med students from incredibly diverse backgrounds in science, engineering, and business; maybe even an army medic, a teacher or a ballet dancer.

Welcome to the Menagerie: The Cumming School of Medicine began formally naming its MD classes after animals in 1975 when a professor became frustrated with his class and called them a bunch of turkeys. The name stuck and so did the tradition. Each new class is named by the class ahead so they usually choose something obscure and possibly revolting — then they put it on a hockey jersey. Rural Medicine: Rural medicine is an opportunity to become immersed in the continuum of patient care and get a glimpse into small town living. Rural experiences could include scrubbing in during a pre-clerkship elective, signing up for a full-fledged University of Calgary Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (UCLIC) in Yellowknife, the Crowsnest Pass or Canmore, or taking advantage of a variety of rural placements for clerkship rotations.

ABORIGINAL HEALTH PROGRAM Created to encourage awareness of First Nations, Métis and Inuit health and healing issues, and to recruit and support aboriginal students, the program also provides professional development initiatives for faculty members interested in working with aboriginal individuals, families and communities.

BIG EXPERIENCE, SMALL TOWN Through my clerkship year I was able to complete a number of core rotations at rural sites throughout southern Alberta. I also had the opportunity to do a twoweek elective in northern Canada, working in communities that are fly-in only, far from any tertiary support. During my rural experiences, I worked directly with patients, I developed practical skills, and I had more one-on-one learning time with preceptors.
