4.0 SPECIATION

30/05/17 - 25/08/17 4.1 Brief

For this project you will be planning and executing your final work for your Masters degree here at UCA. Over the past few months you have been developing some facinating research interests. It is down to you, now, to progress these well developed interests and use your fabrication skills to produce a well made and spatial installation at 1:1 scale.

4.2 Requirements

Your proposal must be space-making in some way which incudes 1:1 fabrication and extends beyond object and product. What is crucial here is you are working towards presenting your work in an exhibition which is open to the public and forms an important part of your assessment. So think about what you would like to present in a ‘gallery’ type space and, if your work does not immediately conform to this, how you might solve these challenges of presentation. You will also be presenting some of your work on paper in frames, so you will need to consider what these images might be. You are asked to prepare a documentation blog recording your physical experimentation and research (details below). This is alongside the usual portfolio submission and a consise design report which will present your work in a precise and easily understood way.

4.3 Outcomes

You will develop your ability to design and deliver a full scale installation through the planning and fabrication stage. Your practical work is expected to demonstrate innovation and a high level of skill and execution that directly relates to a student’s research concerns. A coherent relationship between a sophisticated and on-going theoretical enquiry and a well-realised spatial intervention or installation is expected, culminating in professional standard individual contributions to the MA Graduation show.

4.4 Assessment

Completion of the Speciation project will contribute 100% of the grade for the MA Interior Design ‘Final Realisation’ unit (CIND 7013) and the MA Architecture ‘Final Realisation’ unit (CARC 7005). Both units are valued at 60 credits. Assessment will be carried out at the point of submission via a final A2 paper portfolio and completed prototypes or models and written report. Final installation outcomes will be reviewed with the external examiners. Feedback will be verbal and written at formative stages and written at the summative stage for this project.

4.5 Duration

The project will run from 30/05/2017 until the show opening on 25/08/2017

4.8Process Blog

One of the most important outcomes from this unit is the process blog. This is a blog you can set up on any of the platforms you choose, we recommend Tumblr as it has an imgage and video friendly presentation. The blog is a diary document of your design and making process and should be updated on a daily basis. For assessment, and this is an assessed part of the course, we will expect at least 40-50 posts by the time you complete your MA. Submission will be by email to course leader Lucy Jones of a link to the blog. The contents of the blog should be a reflective commentary on the progression of your design process and the building of your graduating work. You should be photographing and documenting every step of your making process through both photography and film. You can think of the blog as a diary where you record what progress you have made each day on your project. This is a very useful tool in assessment internally and also in providing evidence to the external examiners.

4.9 Deliverables

The following are minimum deliverable requirements for completion of the project: A 1:1 spatial intervention carefully and professionally fabricated and curated in an exhibition space. Written Report presenting your research project and final realisation in a professional manner according to the provided template. A2 research diagrams showing context of reseach and development A2 site investigation/ material research A2 detailed drawing of context aspect of the project: what is your ‘site’? A2 drawing or render explaining proposed interaction and change A2 portfolio showing design development drawings A2 portfolio records of all physical fabrication tests & prototype pieces A2 portfolio records of any simulation, or digital work A2 portfolio documentation of construction and construction details A2 detailed plans, sections and elevations of the built work at 1:5 A1 interactive drawing showing detailed understanding of use, change over time and interactivity. Composed film of final installation outcome Process blog (link by email to Lucy Jones) Electronic portfolio and report pdf (memory stick)

4.10 Exhibition

You will be taking part in the yearly Masters Graduate Show at UCA, opening this year on the 25th of August. The show is the most important moment of the year and it forms the framing context for your final work here for your masters qualification. We have a deadline of the 22/08/17 as a technical check around the spaces to ensure that your installation is up and running so we can make a summative assessment and you are prepared for the External Examiner presentations. There are spaces used by the students across the school and historically there have been MA Interior Design and MA Architecture students spread all over the campus, depending on the requirements of the installation and most positive placing of the work. By 17/07/17 you will need to have submitted a production list in excel spreadsheet which highlights the requirements you have for your installation so we can discuss the allocation of spaces across the school and also be aware of your technical requirements. You can always discuss this with your design tutor in advance. Term 3 Timetable - CSA_UCA / MA Architecture and MA Interior Design 2016_17 - To be read in conjunction with the unit briefs and handbooks.

4.11 T hesis Revie w and Report

There is a second Thesis Review is coming up on the 1st of June. For the previous presentation you were asked to produce a series of diagrams presenting and reflecting on what you have progressed through your design and written work. For this presentation, you are asked to, through diagramming, drawings and statements, to present your work and proposals following the below headings and sub-headings: 1. Project Details 2. Research Agenda and Process a) Overview b) Research Questions c) Significance and Contribution d) Methodologies 3. Design Proposal Key technological outcomes of proposal 4. Design Research Context: a) Field of Work b)Work by others 5. Design Methodologies a) Critical Design Elements 6. Prototyping and testing 7. Fabrication Techniques 8. Control Systems 9. Occupation and Interaction 10. Dissemination and Future Work 11. Supporting Information, suppliers list Try and be concise and stick to between 10-15 slides and we encourage you as much as possible to use the information you have already reflected on in your thesis, documented in your design work and presented in your previous Thesis Review. Following this, you can start to prepare your Written Report presenting your research project and final realisation in a professional manner according to a common template. For this report, you will be briefed on the 7/6/17. In general, the report template follows the above format in terms of contents and you will be issued with this for the report in due course.
