Company History

In the early 1980s a young Rod Mersino left his Michigan roots to answer the calls from Texas for well drillers during the oil boom. He found his niche running drill rigs in the oil fields and got a taste of drilling for construction dewatering. He worked as many hours a day as his employer would allow. After seven years Rod and his wife Karen took their experiences, some hard-earned money, and their growing family of seven kids, back to Michigan. In 1988 they established Mersino Dewatering in Davison, Michigan, where they would specialize in construction dewatering. Starting as a small operation with only a handful of employees to call a crew, some of whom were family, the company soon established a reputation in the area for service and performance when it came to dewatering construction sites.

Over the next 10 years Mersino Dewatering saw steady and managed growth. Mersino’s dewatering operations gradually expanded from deep wells to include wellpoint systems, sock-tile dewatering, vacuum educator systems, and water and sewer bypass pumping. By 1998, the company had set up six satellite offices, had a staff of 50 employees, and was doing business in 20 states.

With pumps and pump performance being such a critical component of dewatering and bypass operations, Mersino soon realized that they needed more control of pump availability, pump parts, and pump design. In 1997, Mersino integrated Global Pump into the business and they began manufacturing world class pumping equipment designed and built based on jobsite experiences and real-world needs. In addition to dewatering pumps, Global Pump designs and produces pumps for the oil, gas, chemical, and petrochemical industries. In addition, Global Pump produces a wide range of heavy-duty, high-efficiency portable pumps, both diesel engine and electric motor driven. Pumps range from 4-inch to 24-inch that are capable of developing over 600 feet of head and flow capacities to 200,000 GPM.

Oldest son Gino Mersino has been working in the family business since he was a teenager. Gino graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in finance, and in 2000 took over the leadership role as company CEO, and today the business continues to move forward. It has gained a reputation as one of the premier contractors in the dewatering business, and as the source for the Global Pump brand, well known as some of the most robust heavy pumps in the marketplace. Global pumps are supplied to a network of distributors world-wide.

Nationwide Capabilities

The Mersino equipment fleet and capabilities have both continued to expand over the years. In addition to Casagrande and Gus Pech drill rigs and custom high pressure well point rigs, the company sets up its own bypass piping and now owns fusion machines with capacity to 48-inch diameter. Mersino has single pass trenchers that can provide dewatering up to 20-foot deep and can create slurry walls up to 75-feet below grade. The Mersino pumping fleet is impressive with dewatering, trash and hydraulic submersibles, axial and mixed flows, as well as vertical turbine pumps positioned at branches across North America. Temporary Power systems are also available in-house.

Today Gino Mersino works out of the company’s headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan while overseeing 16 branch offices and 360 employees. Mersino’s extensive equipment fleet, paired with their experienced staff at every level, has allowed for successful execution of work on multiple, simultaneous large-scale projects. Mersino is a full-service contractor with experience from design to completion for any type of dewatering, bypassing, or pumping challenge. Mersino engineers are involved from the beginning of every project and can provide detailed stamped plans, design calculations, and full submittal packages for owners, contractors, or consultants.

Mersino can successfully provide turn-key installation services anywhere in the continental United States. No continued on page 37 Mersino Drill Rig installing 40-foot deep well

Mersino’s recent projects in New England include:

Lake Ave. Pump Station Bypass, Worcester, MA

Under contract to long-time UCANE member R. H. White Const. Co., Inc. Mersino assisted with an emergency situation by providing pumps and manifolds necessary to divert sewage flows temporarily into an existing force main. Using three primary 12” GSH pumps, a custom bypass header, and an 18” discharge line Mersino was able to quickly bypass into the system’s force main bypass connecter. The on-demand bypass system is capable of flowing up to 15MGD to support R. H. White while the permanent pumps in the station are refurbished and or replaced.

Goshen Dam Bypass, Hancock, VT

In order for new control gates to be installed at the dam, the river flows needed to be diverted around the dam, Mersino provided a pumping system consisting of (1) 8” Global Standard Trash (GST) pump set to handle dry weather flows of up to 5 CFS (2,244 GPM) and (6) 18” Global Standard Trash (GST) pump sets capable of handling wet weather flows of up to 110 CFS (49,560 GPM).

Sewer Bypass for CIP Lining, Woburn, MA

Turn-Key operation for UCANE member J. Derenzo Co. project required bypassing of sewer pipelines ranging from 15 inchs to 36 inches in diameter. Furnish, Install, and operate multiple 8 inch trash pumps and HDPE piping systems to handle live sewage flows ranging from 3 million to 6 million gallons per day.

UCANE is proud to include the Mersino Companies as members and we wish them continued success in the New England Region. n
