GET READY 2 CHANGE YOUR WORLD CHICAN@/LATIN@ COMMUNITY
As a student at the world’s premier public university, you inherit a 150-year-old tradition of academic excellence, community fellowship, and transformation. To change the world, you need only to connect the dots.
I learned more about myself and my community at Berkeley than I ever knew before. Learning about pre-Columbian art, spirituality, and technology in Professor Celia Rodriguez’s Mexican and Chicano Art class gave me a new understanding of my heritage and my place in this world. – Monica M., Major: Anthropology
JENN C. MAJOR: PSYCHOLOGY • MINOR: ITALIAN STUDIES Summer Bridge was my first taste of Berkeley. It was a reality check of how hard I was going to have to work in order to succeed—yet I also discovered how capable I was. Being a first-generation Latina has given me a different experience of this campus
because it is not always easy to be a minority in a large group of students. The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and other organizations allowed me not only to find my space but also to develop within it as an educated woman of color.
ANDRES V. MAJORS: MATHEMATICS & PHILOSOPHY I am the eldest son of Costa Rican immigrants and the older brother of two sisters, and as a Latino on campus, I’ve learned that navigating Berkeley is sometimes difficult. I’ve had to search for support systems that enabled me to feel comfortable here. Undergraduate research made me feel part of the Berkeley community. I had the opportunity to conduct Mathematics Education research
for the Graduate School of Education with my faculty advisors, Alan Schoenfeld, Ph.D., and Danielle Champney, Ph.D. I’m also part of New Experiences for Research and Diversity in Science (NERDS) and the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano/Xicana de Aztlán (MEChXA), which has allowed me to serve my community at large.
As a member of Hispanic Engineers and Scientists, I enjoy surrounding myself with likeminded people who support and encourage me to achieve my goals. — Elisa Aurora R., Major: Industrial Engineering & Operations Research
ALEJANDRA T. MAJOR: SOCIOLOGY I’m a transfer student, and my first semester I took a class on the Politics of Day of the Dead with Professor Celia Rodriguez. I didn’t know what to expect, but as I continued to attend, I began to feel challenged to the point where I had to question my own existence and purpose in life. Becoming aware of who I am and the principles under which I operate are some of the attributes I
have re-evaluated and reaffirmed by attending this class. Being part of a small percentage of Chican@/Latin@ students on campus has sparked an interest in me to continue to create a bridge for the next generation. I’ve devoted a large part of my time gaining the experience and skills to enable and encourage youth to enter higher education.

Although being a minority in this institution might seem overwhelming at times, there are so many resources out there to aid in this transition. My transition to Cal could not have been more smooth and comfortable, thanks to Summer Bridge, NERDS (New Experiences for Research and Diversity in Science), and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. — Carlos T., Major: Earth & Planetary Science, Atmospheric Science
