At CSL, we believe that getting involved on campus and developing your leadership skills is an integral part of a college experience. Our goal is to help each student who passes through 102 Sproul Hall find their “voice," gain a better understanding of how to collectively work together, and practice using tools and knowledge to create positive change. We offer a variety of involvement opportunities, many of which

... leadership course that fosters individual, group and community development. This semester FLP year one students have learned about the fundamentals of leadership theory. Additionally they are developing a social justice project, which will be implemented in the spring. The FLP year two students are using the skills and tools they learned last year; such as Leadership Colors, The Five Dysfunctions of Teams, Intercultural Conflict Styles, and The Gift of Feedback, in order to complete an organizational consulting project, which will be actualized in the spring as well. The largest change for FLP this year has been meeting together with other students in the Cal Leadership Institute for large workshops every Wednesday evening. Through CLI, FLP students have forged relationships with students in leadership communities —such as Leadership Symposium and Blueprint.
... workshops. Students have been hard at work developing their social justice projects with the support of the CLI Student Mentors. In spring semester, Blueprinters will carry out their social justice projects in teams of 3-4. Blueprinters will contribute to positive social change through projects such as mentoring high school students who plan to become first-generation college students, teaching leadership skills to students in under-resourced high schools, raising awareness about e-waste and reducing their own usage, and holding workshops for resume building and job searching, as well as health consciousness for immigrant and refugee populations. We look forward to seeing their accomplishments at the end of the year and hearing how their personal definitions of leadership and social justice have grown through engagement with community members and community partners.
The Leadership Symposium Planning Committee has been hard at work this semester planning for our 11th conference. This year we are excited to welcome a variety of speakers including national recognized leadership author, Barry Posner. Opportunities remain for students looking to grow their leadership experience, as well as Cal Alumni looking to connect with this next generation of leaders. For more information contact

Indaba Multicultural Retreat The Indaba Multicultural Leadership Retreat is a national award-winning program that brings students together from selective leadership programs and student leaders from across campus. In its third year, Indaba grew to hosting more than 70 student participants overnight at YMCA Camp Loma Mar in the Santa Cruz Mountain Range. The majority of attendees were from the Cal Leadership Institute, including the Blueprint Leaders for Social Justice, Future Leaders Program, Leadership Symposium Planning Team, and University Health Services Senior Peer Health Coordinators. Other represented organizations
included the Cal Facilitation Team, ASUC Student Government, CalGreeks, Interfaith Action Initiative, and the Center for Student Leadership Peer Leadership Consultants.
Welcome to Indaba! Students enjoy making new friends, sharing their experiences, and learning the principles of leadership and teamwork.
A team of 14 facilitators and event staff, including students, CSL staff, and professional staff from other units at UC Berkeley, helped create memorable learning and growth experiences for participants. Students
explored who they are, where they come from, and what they believe in, while building a purposeful and sustainable leadership community through activities such as: “The Wall,” “Mars Buggy Race,” and the creation of a Multicultural Leadership
Quilt. Other Indaba highlights included an array of inventive team skits, s ‘mores by the evening bonfire, and the traditional closing activity of “Tap Someone Who…”, which recognized the meaningful impact of all participants.

If you could have dinner with any person, living or dead, who would you choose and why?
Maggie Dunbar: “I think Tina Fey would be absolutely hilarious to have dinner with ‐‐ witty, smart, and not afraid to be absolutely ridiculous. Well, either her or Mother Theresa. Totally the same thing.” Jason Lee: “I would have dinner with Paul Ekman. He's a specialist on lie detecting through reading body

Elizabeth Rangel Cortez: “I would like to have dinner with Jesus, because I would like to get his interpretation of the scriptures and gain knowledge directly from him.”

Catching up with a Center for Student Leadership alum... What are you doing now? I am currently studying at the UC Berkeley School of Law to get a JD in Family Law. What was the best part of your leadership program/ Center for Student Leadership office?
Alexandrea Scott ‘10
Alexandrea Scot graduated in May 2010 with a BA in Rhetoric and an AA in Philosophy from her community college. She was part of the Future Leaders Program (FLP) during her time at Cal.
The best part of the Center for Student Leadership office and FLP was that is was a reliable space, which had a trusting group of people that I could turn to for reflection and helped me remember the direction I want to take in life. What I took away from this place, I still carry with me and continue to reflect with friends and family. What is something that you learned in leadership that has helped you after you graduated from UC Berkeley? I have learned to focus on maximizing my strengths and
mitigating my weaknesses. In law school everyone is smart, and grades are given on a curve, so I focus on doing well in the classes that I like and are relevant for my career. Also, a lot of people like to give advice about studying, but we are already successful, so it’s important to do what has already worked for us, and knowing how to adapt when there has been a change in the material or the manner of testing.
