University of California, Berkeley Career Center Year in Review 2010-2011
Looking Ahead Welcome to the Career Center’s 2010-2011 Year in Review! Moving forward, here are the key issues that will guide how we will meet the needs of UC Berkeley students:
Highlights 2010-2011 Online Outreach Expansion. We created 7 new videos last year, and our 16 Online Workshops were viewed over 22000 times. Over 20000 students and alumni registered for Callisto, our online services gateway. Our website received 125 million hits. Commitment to Diversity. We partnered with Academic Achievement, Incentive Awards, Cal Independent Scholar Network, Cal Veterans, and Multicultural Student Development programs to provide customized services and events for student populations who may not typically utilize our services. CareerQuest. We launched this series of 10 events designed expressly for freshmen in spring 2011. We are excited to extend this program to transfer students in fall 2011. New Career Conferences. We piloted three new conferences to offer students multi-faceted ways to engage in their career interests: the Medical School Admissions Conference, Nonprofit Career Symposium, and the PhD Career Colloquium. We plan to offer these in the future, plus add a large scale, high profile event specifically for College of Letters & Science students. Mock Interview Consultants. With support from alumni and alumni donations, we expanded this popular interview preparation program to four experienced consultants (one each for engineering/tech, pre-med, business majors, and for non-business majors interested in business). The consultants conducted 488 mock interviews, almost always receiving the highest evaluation ratings possible. Career Center Kudos. For the second year in a row, “Business Week” gave the career services an “A+” for services for undergraduate business students. We shared our innovative services through regional and national conference presentations. Our director served as President for the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
On the Move! By summer 2012 we will be in our new Lower Sproul location, in the heart of campus. We spent much of 2010-11 planning our move, focusing not only on the needs of today’s students and employers, but those of the future. Our new location is designed to be open and vibrant, featuring a large and flexible assembly space capable of hosting career workshops, employer info sessions, and much more! Expect an invitation to our open house and help us kick off this exciting new era for the Career Center! Job Market Outlook While the US job market struggled in 2010-11, the job market for Cal undergraduates seeking entry-level positions was trending in the opposite direction. Spring 2011 employer participation at Cal increased across the board and based on early fall 2011 employer activity and feedback, we are cautiously optimistic this trend will continue and employers will look to UC Berkeley when seeking to fill entry-level positions. One-Stop Shopping for Jobs & Internships In keeping with student expectations for one-stop shopping, we will make even greater efforts to see that all job and internship position listings for Cal students are posted on our comprehensive website, streamlining the process for employers who can count on greater visibility and for students who can store and submit their employment credentials and sign up for on-campus interviews directly through our system. Enhancing Career Services for High Demand Career Fields and Populations Going forward, our career counselors are organized into five teams to better serve the needs of students from all of Berkeley’s Colleges and Schools with interests in Business, Engineering/Tech, Nonprofit, Diversity, and Pre-Med. Sample highlights include: • Pre-Med Services: A dedicated team of counselors with expertise in this area will handle pre-med appointments and coordinate the delivery of 20 related events and workshops throughout the year. In addition to the team, we will bring in an external consultant to provide mock interviews for medical schoolapplicants. • International and Non-Resident Students: Our influx of international and out-ofstate students share the career interests served by our teams, but bring unique needs related to finding opportunities outside of California and the US. We will look to build partnerships with employers and alumni contacts beyond our borders to assist these students with their career goals.
Career Center Mission We prepare undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni to make informed decisions about their futures by providing comprehensive resources, programs, and counseling on career development, internships, employment, and graduate school. We fulfill our mission through: • A wide range of partnerships with employers, graduate schools, and campus academic and administrative departments that contribute to the breadth and effectiveness of our services. • State-of-the-art technology that maximizes accessibility to our resources and services. • First-class customer care that represents the highest level of customized quality service.
