2011-2012 YEAR IN REVIEW
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY CAREER CENTER Division of Student Affairs
Looking Ahead Welcome to the Career Center’s 2011-2012 Year in Review! We spent much of the year planning for our relocation, and this process provided the perfect spring board for rethinking the way we deliver services. We moved in October 2012, and now that we are in our new, open, vibrant, and accessible location in the heart of student activity, we have many exciting plans for 2012-2013, for example:
Highlights 2011-2012 Callisto Goes Mobile. We launched the mobile version of Callisto, our online services gateway, to provide “on the go” access from “smart” devices. Over 24,000 positions were posted via Callisto, and our website received 81 million+ hits last year. Our online videos were viewed nearly 24,500 times. The inaugural “Letters & Science Career Conference” brought over 200 students together to explore career paths, articulate the value of their Cal degree, and define their marketable skills in order to be more competitive for today’s challenging job market. Continuing our Commitment to Diversity. Our Diversity Counseling Team held the first ever “The Insiders-Diversity Recruiter Panel & Mingle” for over 100 first generation, under represented, and non-traditional students and the advisors that serve them. CareerQuest for Transfer Students. Building on the spring 2011 CareerQuest for Freshmen program, in fall 2012 we successfully extended CareerQuest to transfer students.
Welcoming More Guests: In anticipation of increased traffic, we will enact several new approaches to deliver first-class customer service. Reception at the new Career Center will combine the best elements of Apple Stores and Nordtsrom to create a positive first impression and meet the expectations of today’s students. Instead of encountering a traditional reception desk and waiting area, guests will be greeted by our peer advisors who will utilize hand held tablet computers to quickly address basic questions. We will also increase our mini appointment availability and offer a new Friday Career Lounge Series to promote learning around timely topics, such as Prepping for the Career Fair, How to use LinkedIn, and a Cover Letter Writing Lab. Holding Events at the Career Center: Now that we have a convenient location that boasts a very attractive event space capable of holding 100 guests, we can host our own events, including career conferences, networking events, career and internship workshops, employer panels, and Employer Information Sessions. Previously, these events had to be held elsewhere, causing confusion for students and adding administrative work for our staff. Going Global: We are very pleased to have received funding to hire a full-time counselor to serve international students, a critical needs area and a growing population on campus. In addition, we are honored to have the US Department of State’s Diplomat in Residence and the Peace Corps’ Regional Recruiter join us at the Career Center. Creating a One Stop Shop for Employment Listings: We will focus our efforts on firmly establishing Callisto as UC Berkeley’s central portal for employment listings originating from campus departments and the employers who contact them to search for Berkeley talent. This streamlines the process both for employers who can count on greater visibility and for students who can store and submit their employment credentials while feeling confident that they only need to look in one place for opportunities.
Career Center Social Media Plan. We created and deployed a strategic social media plan. Our innovative plan was presented at a national conference and for UC Berkeley campus audiences.
Career Center Mission
Mock Interview Consultants. This year three mock interview consultants with industry experience held a total of 306 one-on-one sessions with business minded students, Haas business majors, and technical/engineering students. Nearly 90% of students gave the service an “excellent” rating. For spring 2013, we plan to hire another consultant to provide feedback on medical school admissions statements.
• A wide range of partnerships with employers, graduate schools, and campus academic and administrative departments that contribute to the breadth and effectiveness of our services.
Career Center Kudos. “Business Week” gave career services an “A” for undergraduate business students.
We prepare undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni to make informed decisions about their futures by providing comprehensive resources, programs, and counseling on career development, internships, employment, and graduate school. We fulfill our mission through:
• State-of-the-art technology that maximizes accessibility to our resources and services. • First-class customer care that represents the highest level of customized quality service.
Career Counseling
Our career counseling staff presents programs, prepares resources, and meets one-on-one with students and alumni to help them make informed decisions about their futures.

Presenting student Career Destinations and a Strategic Roadmap for the Career Center
Career Center Strategic Themes Guiding Our Actions for the Next Three Years
Accenture
Solidifying 1st class customer service: personalizing the customer experience
Apple Inc. Bain & Company Bank of America
Proactively providing friendly personal attention to our guests continues to be one of our guiding principles. ● Example: Providing “Apple Store meets Nordtsroms” reception where guests, instead of forming a line at a traditional reception desk, will be greeted by our peer advisors equipped with hand-held tablet computers and quick answers to basic questions
Leveraging technology: moving to self-service models
BlackRock Chevron Corporation Cisco Systems, Inc.
The Career Center has made great strides in making information accessible, and now our customers want more than access–they want the ability to conduct meaningful services at times and places that are convenient for them. ● Example: Creating an online Alumni Gallery where graduates can upload their own videos detailing their career success stories to inspire and connect with current students
Deloitte & Touche Ernst & Young LLP KPMG LLP Macy’s Inc. Microsoft Corporation PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Teach For America Wells Fargo
Strengthening partnerships: developing Career Center champions
Building partnerships has always been one of our foundations, but now we want to elevate our Career Center partners to Career Center champions–strong advocates who enthusiastically advance our interests whenever an opportunity presents itself. ● Example: Forging a stronger partnership with the California Alumni Association, which will exponentially increase the growth of our Cal Externship Program, providing more opportunities for alumni and students to connect over career exploration activities
Innovation: creating delivery systems for the next generation of students and employers
We will be creative and deliberate in our efforts to deliver services, resources, and information in ways that reach and resonate with the students and employers of today and the future. ● Example: Creating multi-faced online Career Portfolio services for Letters & Science students eager to identify career paths ● Example: Using web conferencing tools at events to feature alumni and employer panelists from multiple locations
