Elevating the next generation.
Transformative Leadership
Create value for tomorrow’s scientific leaders. What’s the market doing now? Is our strategy meeting customer needs? How might we adapt to perform better? At the moment, this is just a split-second snapshot of the questions going through the mind of Lisa Davis. As CEO Gas and Power of Siemens AG, a massive global supplier of power and renewable energy, Lisa must constantly anticipate change and solve problems to create value for her customers. She remembers how well the rigorous curriculum at Berkeley prepared her for a challenging, yet rewarding career at the very highest levels of business. “It was always an honor to be at Berkeley and to learn from the best,” she says. “What a great opportunity to learn from people so distinguished in their fields.” Now Lisa is committed to paying it forward by providing even more of that world-class opportunity for today’s students — tomorrow’s leaders in science.
“There’s such good work being done. Giving back will allow Berkeley to do even more for students who need our support.” Lisa Davis BS 1985 Chemical Engineering CEO Gas and Power, Siemens AG
Discovery Science
Provide the elements of future breakthroughs. Kevan Shokat remembers Berkeley like it was yesterday. The classes. The conversations. Most of all, the passion for achieving the impossible. “It’s a special place when you’re beginning to shape your scientific creativity,” Kevan says. “You learn first-hand that small “doable” steps are often the key to solving these huge, insurmountable challenges.” Empowered by the innovative culture at Berkeley, Kevan launched a successful career in Discovery Science. For more than a decade— as a professor at both UCSF and Berkeley— his research has targeted oncogenes, leading to major breakthroughs in the war on cancer. As Kevan and so many others have learned on campus, there’s no challenge too big for Berkeley. And the path to progress leads right through Latimer Hall.
“We need new knowledge. We need discoveries. And that’s what Berkeley does so well.” Kevan M. Shokat PhD 1991 Chemistry Professor and Chair, Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology, UCSF; Professor, Department of Chemistry, UC Berkeley; Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Green Investing
Make a positive change through innovation. Ever since he was a student, Martin Mulvihill has been passionate about using the tools of chemistry to create positive environmental change. This belief helped form the intellectual foundation for the Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry, which Martin started while a student at Berkeley. It was also his inspiration for co-founding Safer Made, a venture capital fund investing in companies that remove chemicals of concern from consumer products and their supply chains. “People want things that are better for the environment, their families, and themselves,” Martin says. And through his transformative work at Safer Made and beyond, Martin is at the very forefront of the movement to invest in more responsible materials and processes. In other words, that’s the definition of using chemistry to make a positive change.
“Some of the smartest people in the world come to Berkeley. They will open your mind to things you never thought of.” Martin Mulvihill PhD 2009 Chemistry Co-Founder, Safer Made
Promising Future
