MAKING A DIFFERENCE: TURKEY Ultimately, her goal is to teach in Turkey near the Syrian border. “A lot of Syrian refugees are there and the best way for them to move past what brought them there is education.”

TEACHING IN PRACTICE: INDIA Suaad already has experience teaching at a small village in India. “My five-week experience was eye opening, and I learned so much from the children. The experience showed me how much you can teach with so little – we really just had chalk and a board. I realized you don’t need technology or a lot of other resources; you can be creative with what you have.”

Suaad Hansbhai (Pre-Middle Childhood Education, ‘15) was simply born to teach. The West Chester, Ohio native created Noor Youth – a Muslim girls youth group, works as a teacher’s aide at the El-Sewedy International Academy of Cincinnati, serves as a religious weekend school teacher at the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati, and provides private tutoring services in her spare time. All the while, she’s managed to stand out as a star student herself and earn the Honor Student of the Year award for 2014-15.

Suaad credits her parents, as her first and most important teachers, with sparking her passion for education, and salutes her professors at UC Blue Ash for inspiring her future endeavors as an international educator. “My professors have been so supportive and provided creative, interesting ways to teach. I look forward to incorporating their lessons in my own teaching, as I strive to bring knowledge and education to the parts of the world that need it most. ”

POWERFUL WORDS

Suaad received a standing ovation for her words of inspiration as she accepted the Honor Student of the Year award. “You are mighty – beyond imagination. Speak up. Respond to the thunder. The best response we can give to those who threaten to take away our freedom is to respond peacefully. And collectively.”

MY CITY I’M WORKING TO HEAL

innovative ideas and helping to create new initiatives for the city.

But his healing ambitions go far beyond the medical landscape; he’s working to improve the health of his city.

He’s a huge supporter of Mayor Cranley, and wanted to be a part of his vision for Cincinnati.

Rayshon is a proud member of the Mayor’s Young Professionals Kitchen Cabinet – a group of 75 young leaders invited to serve as advisors to Cincinnati Mayor, John Cranley, providing

“I became intrigued with politics about five years ago when I learned about all the work that happens behind the scenes at City Hall.”

As he completes his education, Rayshon plans to transition to UC’s Clifton campus to pursue his Bachelor in Science of Nursing (BSN) degree with a minor in political science. From there, he’s only looking forward. “I’d like to run for Cincinnati City Council – and continue to help the city I love.“

“Through the Young Professional’s Kitchen Cabinet, I’m able to help make a real difference with neighborhood safety, fiscal issues, community arts initiatives, and more!”

COOL I’M MAKING SCHOOL

Tara Dupps (Pre-Early Childhood Education, ‘15) knows what it takes to succeed in school – involvement, dedication and drive. And most importantly, it takes the support to help you go the distance. She’s felt that support first hand at UC Blue Ash. “There’s a real sense of community here. Everyone is very supportive, and there are so many opportunities to grow.” And grow, she has. As a student, Tara maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her college career while serving on campus as a Student Orientation

Leader,* a Student Ambassador,** and founder of the college’s Association of Student Educators.

Her most important involvement, however, is that which she’s conducted off-campus – serving as project leader of Loveland Elementary School’s Cool School Enrichment program. Each week, Tara supervised the program where children from challenging backgrounds gathered for extra academic and social assistance. “Beyond helping kids with reading and math, Cool School helps kids learn important life skills that they’ll

need to continue their success.” Tara and her Cool School team was honored with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Award for their volunteer efforts. “Receiving the award for Cool School was a great honor. But more rewarding than that is the difference we made in the lives of the kids.” Her experience with Cool School has inspired Tara to work with at-risk children or those who have learning disabilities or behavioral issues. “It’s important to me to advocate for the kids that need it most.”

ABOUT FACE Joey Clark served eight years in the Marine Corps. Next mission: college.

Joey Clark (Nursing, ‘16) found himself wondering how he would survive his first day in a classroom after eight years in the Marine Corps. “I was nervous. But as soon as I stepped in the classroom, I realized just what it meant to come here. My professors were interested in me. They knew my name, and were willing to put in the effort to help me succeed.” OOH-RAH. There were certainly challenges with making the transition from military life into civilian life; for that Joey relied

on the support and guidance of the college’s support services. “I learned to ask for help. We as veterans sometimes forget that we need help, since we spent years being the ones that helped others. “ Beyond the Veteran Student Services office, Joey discovered the many support labs on campus, including math and science labs, writing and study skills tutoring, and career services. And did we mention they’re all free?

It didn’t take Joey long to realize that he had a lot to offer the college that was so eager to help him succeed. He used his leadership skills to take on roles on campus as a Student Ambassador, a Student Orientation Leader and a Student Orientation Coordinator. “I love giving tours and talking about UC Blue Ash. Showing the pride I have for this school is something I take great joy in.” OOH-RAH.

YOU ARE OUR NUMBER

ONE Daniella Fisher (Chemistry) is a UC Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Member Award winner, and the creator of an innovative partnership between UC Blue Ash and Sycamore Community Schools. She helped lead the development of the program where UCBA students work with elementary school students to explore scientific discovery. “For me, the most rewarding part was being able to impact the future generation of scientists while seeing our UC Blue Ash students shine in teaching others,” said Fisher.

Eric Anderson (Electronic Media) has won numerous accolades for his own work, including three regional Emmy Awards, four Telly Awards, and recognition as Ohio’s Best Videographer four years in a row by the Ohio Associated Press. But passing on his knowledge to others will always be his greatest achievement. “One of the highlights of my teaching career was being invited by the Navy to give a week-long workshop to train the Mass Communication Specialists at the US Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan.”

Rob Gioielli (History) is a well-known specialist in environmental history, actively publishing and working on projects including environmental philanthropy and international wildlife conservation. He encourages students to follow their passions, while gaining a holistic education. “Time and again, top executives and professionals say they want graduates with critical thinking and analytical skills, and the ability to write well and work in teams. Those are the skills you learn in the UCBA Liberal Arts program.”

Helene Harte (Pre-Education) is a driving force in helping future educators achieve their dreams. She advises the Association of Student Educators on campus and presents research on relevant topics in education on a national level. She also has joined a group of educators to develop the Respecting Haiti curriculum – a cross-cultural training program to raise awareness of child slavery in Haiti. “I want to show my students that education is the key to breaking the cycle of slavery, violence and intolerance.”

A FRIEND TO FURRY FRIENDS Alumna Tammy Wynn (Veterinary Technology, 2009) is the Founder and CEO of Angel’s Paws, a pet hospice company that provides end of life care for animals. Angel’s Paws is the only pet service of its kind in the country, with over 85 partnering veterinary hospitals. “UC Blue Ash played a critical role in getting me where I am today. It has a small college approach. The instructors know the students and put in extra time; you don’t find that at every college.” Wynn is a proud parent of her own furry friends—two of which she adopted directly from the Veterinary Technology program as a student at UC Blue Ash.

A MODEL FOR SUCCESS & GIVING BACK Alumna Rebecca Lee (Nursing Technology, 2001) is a not only a prime example of a successful student, she’s a tireless champion for helping today’s students succeed. After leaving UC Blue Ash, she went on to earn her doctoral degree, and is now engaged in teaching and research at UC’s Clifton campus – specializing in community and cultural health care interventions. “My work is unique in that my client can be an individual, family, community, city or nation. Using data collection, research and community collaboration, we as public health nurses can make a real difference to these constituents.” She gives back to today’s students as a scholarship donor, and through an innovative community-academic partnership between the UC colleges of Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Allied Health, the UCBA Dental Hygiene department, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Through this partnership, she helps lead an interprofessional team of students from these colleges in providing free health and dental screenings and health education to low-income individuals receiving services through SVdP. “UC Blue Ash will always be such an important part of who I am.
