MAJOR Jercell Respicio is majoring in biology at UC Blue Ash, with a focus solidly on his future. “As a son of a nurse and a grandson of a decorated police officer in the Philippines, I’ve always been attracted to both worlds: the discipline, focus, and commitment of a soldier and the giving nature of being a physician,” said Respicio. “These two career paths may initially seem different, but define selfless service at their core.” And that is Jercell’s goal. He plans to complete his biology degree at UC Blue Ash before continuing on a pre-med path at UC’s Uptown campus – all while serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army Reserves. “Being a physician in the military is a dream for me. And UC Blue Ash is making it possible.”
money on tuition and to be able to concentrate in an academics-oriented environment. “I wasn’t interested in the party scene, or the distractions that come with living on campus. I found UC Blue Ash was the perfect place to drive me toward my academic goals.” What he didn’t expect was to fall in love with the campus, too. Beyond his focus on his studies, Jercell found himself getting involved on campus – participating in many student engagement events, and even taking on leadership roles as a Student Orientation Leader and Student Ambassador. UCBA was the perfect fit. “I couldn’t have made a better choice for me.”
Jercell chose to follow his dreams at UC Blue Ash to save Jercell Respicio is funding his education in part through the Dean’s Scholarship and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) scholarship. faculty spotlight: jordan crabbe Statistics and Business Analytics professor, Dr. Jordan Crabbe, is passionate about teaching and ensuring that his students not only understand the concepts taught, but also are able to apply them to the real world.
“I enforce the concept of statistics and business analytics through real-world based project learning.” In his classroom, students are empowered to accelerate their own learning through inquiry, collaborative work and research. His projects motivate students and encourage them to be more active as they aspire to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subject matter. It’s a process that his students simply love. A native of Ghana, Dr. Crabbe brings a worldly perspective to his classroom and he embraces the diversity on our campus. “Diversity and inclusion is so important in a collegiate environment, and it’s something that we work hard to nurture here at UC Blue Ash as we strive to be the best educators we can.”
Leaders in Teaching & Learning Our professors are experts in the ever-changing art of teaching and learning. In fact, we have a professional development center on campus dedicated to keeping our faculty at the leading edge of teaching practices.

faculty spotlight: keen wilson A first-generation student himself, Biology professor, Dr. Keen Wilson has a deep appreciation for the value of an education – and a passion for opening up unique opportunities for his students. As an evolutionary developmental biologist, Dr. Wilson spends much of his time outside of the classroom researching the development of sea urchins using the latest molecular genetic techniques available in the field.
“We’re doing some really interesting research here – and I love to get my students involved in the process.”
His students are eager to delve into the research as well, and it pays dividends for them. “I’ve had several students go on to have very successful careers in research and academia themselves. It’s so rewarding to see them find their passions and excel.”
Professor Keen Wilson received the 2017 University of Cincinnati Excellence Award for Faculty-to-Faculty Research Mentoring in recognition of his work in leading and supporting research projects at UC Blue Ash.

faculty spotlight: sue sipple English professor, Dr. Sue Sipple, co-directs the college’s British Summer Study Abroad program, enabling students – many of whom have never had the chance to travel outside the U.S. – to learn through immersion in another culture. An exciting mix of classroom studies and experiential learning, UC Blue Ash study abroad programs are an amazing opportunity.
“Introducing students to the world, and seeing them embrace new cultures and experiences – that’s a thrill for me.” An award-winning professor, Dr. Sipple continues to enhance her own experience through travels to Europe in the study of Holocaust literature and education. “My research has a huge impact on the courses I teach here,” said Sipple. “It gives me the in-depth knowledge to help my students understand the significance of world events like the Holocaust.”

A World of Difference. One of Sue’s students, Chris Strohofer (‘17), is a prime example of how study abroad can make an amazing impact in a student’s life. Before the program, he was uncertain about his major and his future. After returning, he chose International Affairs as his
major, leading him to an internship at the U.S. State Department and another semester-long study abroad in Ghana. “I like to think that the program I helped create started him on a journey that will impact his career and his life,” said Dr. Sipple.

Applied Graphic Communication graduate, Maria Huls (‘17) knows a thing or two about creating a buzz. As an amateur beekeeper, she works with her dad to nurture their colony’s hives – creating and advocating for local bee products. As a Student Ambassador, she led prospective students on campus visits, highlighting all the amazing features of the college. And this year, she created a logo for the college’s 50th anniversary celebration, and was selected from dozens of designers as the winner. Her logo will represent the college throughout our yearlong celebration, creating a palpable buzz throughout the community. “I’m so excited to see my logo design implemented in all the
During her time at UC Blue Ash, Maria had the opportunity to experience a little bit of everything the college has to offer. From serving as a peer mentor and alumni mentee, to working in the admissions office and as a Student Orientation Leader, to studying abroad in Australia, her college experience has been extremely rewarding. Says Maria, “These are all things that one would expect from a larger university campus, but they can get it at UC Blue Ash in a comfortable setting that is a great value.” “I don’t know what the future has in store for me at all, and that’s what’s really exciting. I have all of these skills and a blank slate future to build myself.”

breaking through Dental Hygiene alumna, Bernita Bush Gissler (‘73), was the first African-American graduate from the UC Blue Ash College Dental Hygiene program.
“It was an honor to open the door for other African-American women to venture into this great profession.” She went on to help create a private dental hygiene school in Switzerland and taught there from 1984 to 1993. In 1993 she was promoted to the University of Bern in Switzerland where she taught until her retirement in 2014. “The school we created was only the third dental hygiene school of its kind in Switzerland,” she recalls. “It’s been such an adventure.” Bernita is living proof of the distances our students can go with the education they receive at UC Blue Ash. “UC Blue Ash has made a major impact on my life. I’m happy to give back.”
Alum, Ken Suer (Pre-Education, ‘70), remembers the energy and excitement of being on campus in the early years of the college. “There was something special here; all the faculty and staff were engaged in truly making this place great,” he remembers. Over the years, Ken has been dedicated to education and public service. After a career as a high school teacher and counselor, he went on to become the Mayor of Montgomery, Ohio, and continues to serve on the city council today. “UC Blue Ash was the springboard for my career – an affordable, convenient option for a great education. ”
Ken is a familiar face on campus today as an active member of the college’s Alumni Council. He welcomes students during the first weeks of classes, and serves as a student mentor throughout the year. “I have always loved working with young people, and serving as a mentor is one of the most rewarding things I can do. I like to show students that I’ve been where they are – and with individual grit and perseverance, they can achieve their dreams.” “The energy from those early years is still very much alive at UC Blue Ash today,” said Suer. It’s an exciting time to be a Blue Ash Bearcat!

the connection After a few failed attempts at college, Julie Etherton (Accounting, ‘16) came to UC Blue Ash with a 1.19 GPA and a renewed determination to succeed.
“I was so nervous to return to school. Luckily for me, there were a lot of people that were willing to believe in me until I could believe in myself,” recalls Julie.
“Getting involved was the key for me. It helped me make connections and stay committed to reaching my goal.”
She sought help from her advisor and dove headlong into activities on campus, becoming a Student Ambassador and eventually graduating with a 3.98 GPA. She successfully transitioned to UC’s Lindner College of Business and is now on her way to becoming a Certified Public Accountant.
