Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS), within Global Affairs, is your main contact for visa and immigration matters, as well as for helping you develop a home away from home here at UC Davis. We are here to join you as you discover your sense of place and sense of self within this vibrant community—through orientations, advising, and by hosting all types of programming that introduces new cultures and develops new skills.

UC DAVIS INTERNATIONAL CENTER The International Center at UC Davis, located where campus and community meet on the corner of Russell Blvd and California Avenue, welcomes domestic and international students, scholars, and families to share experiences, engage in dialogue, and be a part of community events. UC Davis Global Affairs’ Office of the Vice Provost and Associate Chancellor, Services for International Students and Scholars, and Study Abroad, as well as UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education, International are housed within the International Center. The International Center is usually open 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for university holidays when the center is closed. The center is a hub where people can gather indoors, relax in an outdoor courtyard, or grab drinks and baked goods from Peet’s Coffee. Students can come to the International Center at any time to meet or study and hours are extended during finals.

Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS) From ensuring the world’s brightest international students and scholars have the opportunity to study, research, or teach at UC Davis to providing advising and community programming, SISS helps California and UC Davis become a home away from home for our more than 7,500 international students and more than 2,500 international scholars coming from over 110 countries. As a part of Global Affairs, SISS provides orientation, assistance, information, and referral to international students, faculty, and researchers regarding financial, personal, cultural, and academic concerns.

WHO DO I TALK TO ABOUT VISA AND IMMIGRATION QUESTIONS? siss.ucdavis.edu SISS supports incoming and current international students and scholars and their families with visa and immigration issues. In addition to preparing the necessary documents to apply for a U.S. visa, SISS supports international students and scholars in maintaining their legal status and accessing benefits for their status while here. All international students and scholars have SISS advisors; more information about advising appointments and student drop-in hours is located on our website.

GLOSSARY OF COMMON TERMS INTERNATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT: International students pursuing an

undergraduate degree. INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENT: International students pursuing a graduate degree. INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR: Includes short-term visiting scholars and postdoctoral scholars, as well as full-time career researchers and faculty. DEPENDENT: Spouse or children of international graduate student or scholar, living in the

United States. FACULTY: Professors of various ranks, lecturers, and/or researchers, i.e. the teaching or

academic staff. STAFF: All non-academic employees of the university. SISS: Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS), within Global Affairs, assists

incoming and current international students and scholars, and their families with visa and immigration issues while they are at UC Davis and coordinates programs and activities.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC PROGRAMS AND EVENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS? Programs and events coordinated by SISS and other campus partners support international students, scholars, and their families in adapting to life in the U.S. and at UC Davis. Programs and events are created to help students and scholars succeed academically, personally, and professionally.

Graduate Student and Scholar Certificate Seminar Series

Participate in our seminar series, an opportunity to meet and learn about some of the global leaders in UC Davis. Seminar guests will share their professional journey and career development, highlighting what it means to be a global leader, and how to be successful in an ever-increasing international workplace. Limited seating available and registration is required—check the SISS website for details.

Global Ambassador Mentorship Program

The program is designed to help new freshmen and transfer international students successfully transition to life at UC Davis. The students who run the program, the Global Ambassadors, act as mentors and, most importantly, as friends to help new international students excel in their new lives as UC Davis students. Participants, or mentees, will be able to share their culture and values with their mentor and receive support from them. Through this community of cultural exchange and by participating in our social events that the Global Ambassadors offer, new students will develop close connections with new friends and feel at home in their new community. International Café

SISS hosts two or more International Cafés each quarter. International Cafés are an excellent opportunity to meet and interact with international and domestic students and scholars! Help yourself to free beverages and snacks and participate in themed craft discussion or activity. Join us at our future International Cafés!

Scholar Coffee Break

Scholar Coffee Break is a monthly morning social and is held right before the New J Scholar Orientation. All international scholars, both newly arrived and settled, are invited to this event! Don’t forget to remind your scholar peers in your department. There is no cost to attend. All Scholar Coffee Breaks take place at the International Center, Room 3119. It also allows women to explore the intersections of their identities and other to develop themselves as allies.

WHERE CAN I FIND LANGUAGE LEARNING SUPPORT? llc.ucdavis.edu The Davis Language Center (DLC), located on the bottom floor of Olson Hall, is the central support site for language teaching, testing, learning, and research. The DLC maintains specialized, media-equipped classrooms and computer laboratories available for instructors and students.

ARE THERE SHARED COMPUTERS AVAILABLE ON CAMPUS? iet.ucdavis.edu | computerrooms.ucdavis.edu Information Education Technology (IET) manages the IT catalog, your one-stop location to find information about IT services at UC Davis and the Knowledge Base where you can find articles, how-to instructions and guides for using technology services at UC Davis. There are also computer rooms available on campus where you can access specialized software for video and audio editing, design, programming, etc. UC Davis Student Housing operates Computer Centers in each residence hall that provide residents with complimentary access to computers, printers, scanners, Internet access, and space for studying and holding review sessions.

Transportation HOW CAN I PARK ON CAMPUS? (530) 752-8277 taps.ucdavis.edu Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) sells campus parking permits and is the office to contact should you receive a parking citation on campus. Their goClub provides green transportation options to UC Davis students and employees. TAPS also operates a bicycle program, which includes bicycle registration, a lock cutting service, summer bike storage, bicycle auction, and additional bicycle safety and information resources.

SAFE RIDE 530-754-COPS (2677) Alone on campus and not feeling safe? Safe Ride can provide you an escort when on campus at night if you need it. During certain hours at night they will provide a ride from any campus location to any location in Davis. Other hours they will provide a ride or walking escort between locations on campus. Check the Tap Ride app for availability and booking options.

Busses and Trains HOW DO I USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION? unitrans.ucdavis.edu One option is Unitrans, the transportation system of both UC Davis and the city of Davis. There are two bus stations on campus and rides are free for UC Davis undergraduate students. For others, the fare is $1.25 per ride. Multiride passes are available for purchase. yolobus.com Public transportation on the Yolobus system is free with a UC Davis undergraduate student ID. Fares are listed on their website. The Yolobus goes to West Sacramento, the Sacramento International Airport (SMF) and the nearby town of Woodland. The Yolobus runs late on weekends while Unitrans does not.

HOW CAN I GET TO DIFFERENT UC CAMPUSES? berkbus.ucdavis.edu | (530) 752-UBUS Popular among students, the Davis-Berkeley shuttle provides direct transportation between UC Davis and UC Berkeley for faculty, staff, and registered students. ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/parking/intercampus The UCD-UCDMC intercampus shuttle provides hourly bus transportation between the main UC Davis campus in Davis and the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for $1.50 per ride.

WHERE CAN I GO ON THE TRAIN? amtrak.com Amtrak is the national train service in the United States. From the Davis station, you can take Amtrak to get to other parts of California, including the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also possible to take Amtrak to cities like Portland, OR and Seattle, WA or even across the country to Chicago. Abandoned, unclaimed bicycles are sometimes sold through UC Davis Transportation Services’ publicly-held auctions. Two “live” auctions are held annually, usually in October and May. HOW CAN I RIDE MY BIKE SAFELY? shcs.ucdavis.edu/helmet-hair-dont-care Riding a bicycle is a great way to get around in Davis. Most students, staff, and faculty ride bicycles, and it’s convenient, inexpensive, and fun. However, it is also important to know and follow the rules and to learn how to be safe when cycling in Davis. All bikes on the UC Davis campus must have a current California Bicycle License, you can get one at TAPS for $12. And don't forget to wear a helmet! You are asked for this type of ID when you cash a check, open a bank account, register your automobile, etc. Your passport has this information, but it is not wise to carry it with you on a daily basis because it may be lost. If you cannot drive or will not need a driver’s license during your stay, you can obtain a California State ID Card. You will not be able to drive with only a California ID card. If you plan to drive while in the U.S., please obtain a California Driver License. Your California Driver License can serve as valid form of identification— you do NOT need to obtain both a license and a California ID card.

Finances Banking You should open a bank account as soon as you get to Davis. There are automated teller machines (ATMs) across campus, and it is much safer and more convenient to deposit your money in an account than to carry cash around. HOW DO I OPEN A U.S. BANK ACCOUNT? When living off-campus in apartments, it is usually required that you pay the property manager with a written check. If you prefer, you may be able to open a U.S account while still doing your primary banking with your home account. When opening up a new account, international students and scholars will generally need documentation that proves their identity and residence in the local area, such as their passport, I-20/DS-2019s, and a lease agreement or utility bill.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BANK AND A CREDIT UNION? Both banks and credit unions offer financial services such as savings accounts, checking accounts, and loans. Both will also offer online banking services. The main difference between banks and credit unions is the ownership. Credit unions are owned by their customers, while banks are owned by investors. Customer service, fees, and interest rates can vary depending on the institution you pick, though both will most likely meet your needs. Check with the Davis banks and credit unions to find the best option for you. It is also a good idea to talk to your bank in your home country to see if they have a partnership or affiliation with a bank in the U.S. Sometimes this can make handling your money easier.

WHERE CAN I GET CASH AND EXCHANGE MONEY? Exchanging money can become very expensive with interest rates or fees. Our advice is to withdraw money directly from any U.S. ATM to avoid excessive fees. It is a good idea to talk first with your home bank about withdrawing money from a foreign ATM to see if it allows this and to also find out if your bank charges high fees for foreign ATM withdrawals. Let your bank know that you will be using your ATM card in the United States. Not all U.S. banks accept foreign ATM cards. *Many ATMs charge a nominal fee for withdrawal if your debit card is not affiliated with their bank.

The course is available approximately three weeks after school begins and must be finished prior to Thanksgiving break. There is no fee for the program. The Residence Hall Advising Team (RHAT) is comprised of peer advisors from the college dean offices and the First-Year Experience Program in Student Housing. Topics include: academic expectations, quarter system, American cultural celebrations, academic writing rules, conduct expectations, culture shock, friendships, campus involvement, and time management.

First Year Seminar: Intercultural Communication for Developing Sustainable Solutions to Global Challenges fys.ucdavis.edu This project-based seminar gives students an opportunity to strengthen intercultural communication and learn hands on how improved intercultural understanding between project teams can be used to develop solutions to global challenges that are sustainable and accomplishable. Students will learn the basics of grant proposal writing while developing cultural self-awareness, curiosity, empathy, biases, and verbal/nonverbal communication.

The Davis Farmers Market, rated one of the local produce markets in the United States, is held Saturday mornings yearround and Wednesday evenings, hours vary by season.
