UC DAVIS QUARTER ABROAD 2020 The Global Learning Hub at UC Davis offers a chance for students from all UC campuses to earn UC Davis units while participating in quarter-length programs designed by UC Davis faculty and taught in an international setting. Programs run 10-16 weeks and allow students to earn 13-24 quarter units straight from the UC Davis course catalog.

This specialized program offers students the opportunity to earn UC Davis chemistry units and participate in optional research internships at Academia Sinica. In addition, it allows chemistry majors with the necessary coursework to achieve a degree in pharmaceutical chemistry. The in-depth research experience provides greater exposure to the process of drug discovery and helps students clarify career goals in a myriad of scientific professions. The program will be structured with a fixed curriculum for the quarter. The structure will allow for lectures, discussions, laboratory, and research units.

Internships and Culture in London SPRING QUARTER 2020 MARCH 25 – JUNE 6, 2020 KATHLEEN FREDERICKSON (kfrederickson@ucdavis.edu) United Kingdom—London Spend spring quarter in the heart of London! Intern in a field of your choice and take two upper-division English courses: “Global London,” taught by a UC Davis professor, explores how poems, plays, novels, and films represent the British capital’s relation to the rest of the world, focusing on London as the administrative center for the British empire, as an “emporium” for colonial imports and other foreign consumer goods, as a host to foreign travelers, and as a multi-lingual city of immigrants. A second course focuses on contemporary “British Life and Culture.” Fulfill your requirements for GE Writing Experience, Arts and Humanities, and World Cultures, as well as for the English major and minor. Take classes in fashionable Kensington and participate in a professional internship for 20 hours a week. Excursions in and outside of London are also an integral part of the program.

Language and Culture in Spain SPRING QUARTER 2020 MARCH 30 – JUNE 5, 2020 JEAN-XAVIER GUINARD (jxguinard@ucdavis.edu) Spain—Madrid Madrid, a city where tradition and modernity are just a few steps away, offers a rich artistic heritage and a stimulating cosmopolitan life. As a student you will walk through history—stonepaved streets and flowering balconies—before arriving in Madrid’s city center, famous for tapas, shopping, museums, and night life. The unique spirit of Madrid is both serene and lively, making it a captivating place to learn Spanish and absorb centuries of Iberian culture. Students will take intensive and accelerated courses in Spanish language and culture, with planned activities, visits to museums, excursions and a three-day trip to Salamanca to highlight Spain’s incredible history and beautiful scenery. UC DAVIS SEMINARS ABROAD UC Davis Seminars Abroad are focused, global learning experiences in June, September, or during December break. In a small group setting, UC Davis faculty lead students through UC Davis courses enhanced by field trips and cultural activities. Programs are around two weeks and students receive 2-6 units.

Language and Culture in Argentina FALL QUARTER 2020 SEPTEMBER 20 – DECEMBER 5, 2020 CECILIA COLOMBI (cmcolombi@ucdavis.edu) Argentina—Mendoza In this high-impact quarter abroad program in Mendoza, you will not only study in one of the finest universities in Argentina, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, you will also immerse yourself in the culture and study Spanish while living with a host family. South America’s second largest country and the world’s eighth, Argentina offers a rich culture and history; by walking in the streets of Mendoza, visiting its famous wine country, and tasting its cuisine, you will experience the Argentine way of life like locals do. This program will also give you the opportunity to explore the breath-taking natural wonders of Argentina by hiking close to the highest peak in South America, Aconcagua, kayaking in Nahuel Huapi’s blue waters, and discovering Patagonia’s worldrenowned landscapes.

As part of this program, you will gain global workplace experience by earning credit through a halftime internship. Additionally, you will participate in two writing courses taught by faculty from the nationally-ranked University Writing Program, and complete two thirds of the professional writing minor. Complete a third course by participating in historical and cultural excursions in and around the city. You will have the opportunity to explore food, dance, theater, music, and more in Ireland’s capital city and metropolitan destination, Dublin.

Language and Culture in Today’s Renaissance Florence FALL QUARTER 2020 AUGUST – DECEMBER, 2020 MARGHERITA HEYER-CAPUT (mheyercaput@ucdavis.edu) Italy—Florence During a semester-long full immersion experience in Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance and a vibrant center of innovation, we will walk every day on our way to school, internships, and community events where Dante and Machiavelli, Botticelli and Galileo used to walk and create the literary, political, artistic, and scientific contributions that made Italian culture so relevant in the world. Florence and Italy become our preferred classroom while we also satisfy a foreign language requirement. All courses include visits, from the Uffizi Museum to a ParmigianoReggiano producer in Parma, and from farmers’ markets to Cinque Terre. Our multifaceted Florence experience will make us reflect on the relevance of multiculturalism and empower us to become problem solvers and bridge builders while exploring the beautiful cities and landscapes of Italy and Europe.

Latinx Health Internships in Oaxaca FALL QUARTER 2020 SEPTEMBER 19 – DECEMBER 5, 2020 YVETTE FLORES (ygfloresortiz@ucdavis.edu) Mexico—Oaxaca This specialized program offers students the opportunity to take UC Davis classes on transnational (US-Mexico) health issues and participate in approximately 180 hours of clinical rotations through internships in hospitals and clinics in Oaxaca, Mexico. The courses offered provide students with cultural competencies that are crucial for effective health care professionals. This program is also designed to provide indepth clinical experience that will not only lead to greater Spanish fluency, but help participants clarify career goals. Completion of the program is one course shy of fulfilling requirements for a UC Davis minor in Chicana/o Studies. The program is provided by Child Family Health International (CFHI), an NGO recognized by the United Nations.

The 128ABC plus 129A (lab) sequence serves chemistry, chemical engineering and food science majors and satisfies the organic chemistry requirement for professional schools. The courses are taught by UC Davis instructors on-site and are accompanied by a course on the local history, culture, and industry. The University of Nottingham is a leader in the field of sustainable chemistry and the East Midlands region is rich in history and natural beauty. SUMMER ABROAD INTERNSHIPS Summer Abroad Internships provide students with the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in diverse fields at locations around the globe. Conveniently offered during the summer, the internships will improve your marketability when you apply for jobs and enhance applications to professional schools. UC DAVIS QUARTER ABROAD ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
FINANCIAL AID
To be eligible to participate in a UC Davis Quarter Abroad program, you must meet the following requirements from the date of enrollment through the program end date: • be a registered student at a University of California campus; • be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.0 or above; • be in good disciplinary standing; and • meet any program-specific requirements or prerequisites.
Financial aid is available to qualified students. To be eligible for aid, students must have submitted a FAFSA or Dream Act application for the academic year of the program. Work with the Financial Aid office at UC Davis and on your home campus regarding eligibility, supplemental applications for aid, deadlines, etc.
ENROLLMENT
UC Davis students enrolled in a Study Abroad program are eligible to apply for a Study Abroad Award. To qualify, you must log into your Study Abroad account, click on the “Search Scholarships” tab, and click “Apply Now.” You must submit a completed award application and be enrolled in a Quarter Abroad program by November 6, 2019, 5pm (Spring programs) and March 3, 2020, 5pm (Fall programs).
To be saved a spot in a UC Davis Quarter Abroad program, you must complete your enrollment online: globallearning.ucdavis.edu/quarter The enrollment period for Spring 2020 programs is September 26 – December 6, 2019. The enrollment period for Fall 2020 programs is January 8 – April 3, 2020. Please note that programs fill on a firstcompleted, first-reserved basis. If you do not have a valid passport, apply for one or renew your current one as soon as possible. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the program end date. Please keep your post office receipt as proof of application. Program details are subject to change. Please consult our website for the most current program information: globallearning.ucdavis.edu
FEES Fees vary by program and include the program fee, UC Davis Tuition and Fees, as well as the cost of accommodations, excursions, select meals, and other program materials and services abroad. Airfare, textbooks, and spending money are not included. Submitting your complete enrollment online includes a $300 non-refundable deposit and secures your space in the program.
