Letter from the Vice Provost and Dean
Dear Friends,
This has been both a challenging and rewarding year as we have continued to innovate, adjust and reconnect in response to the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and political tensions around the world. Resilience and compassion within our global community enabled us to make important strides and advance our mission.
I am especially proud of the work of our dedicated and talented staff, faculty and students. Thanks to their efforts and our collaborative work with the UC Davis campus and our global partners:
♦
Over 10,000 students participated in global learning opportunities; ♦ We advanced the UN Sustainable Development Goals through dozens of faculty grants and student internships; ♦ We signed 33 international agreements across 22 countries; ♦ We provided critical services for nearly 9,000 students, faculty and researchers from over 100 countries and six continents; and ♦
More than 12,000 people participated in our events and programs. These accomplishments, and many more, are helping solve pressing global challenges, creating a community of global citizens and bringing us closer to our goal of Global Education for All—providing 100% of students with global learning opportunities.
We continue to focus our programs and services on understanding and addressing inequities. We are committed to being accessible, affordable, inclusive and relevant to the communities we serve. This year, I am happy to share that we expanded the Global Affairs family by welcoming International and Academic English, which provides critical support for multilingual students at UC Davis.
To continue to deliver on our mission in bold and innovative ways, we will soon release two strategic plans: a UC Davis Global Strategic Plan addressing the university’s global engagement goals and our own Global Affairs Strategic Plan guiding our work over the next five years. These documents are highly interconnected and will ensure that we remain focused and impactful in an ever-changing world.
Our work at Global Affairs wouldn’t be possible without you. Thank you for your partnership and collaboration!
All the best,
Joanna Regulska

Reconnecting in a Sustainable World
At the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) 26th annual Presidents’ Meeting, all 60 APRU member institutions’ university presidents, including Chancellor Gary S. May, committed to continued collaboration, scholarship and research in order to create long-lasting sustainability. The agreement aligns with UC Davis’ commitment to environmental sustainability, including the pledge to become carbon-neutral by 2025.
“Regarding the climate change crisis, we talked about our various activities in the evolution toward carbon neutrality and how we’re addressing the UN sustainability goals,” said May during his presentation on “Responses to Crisis in a Diverse Region.”

The Irony of Climate Change
Mandela Washington Fellows developed speeches that spotlight issues facing their communities, their lives and the world. Read Daniel Oladoja’s Ignite Talk.
“I am a climate change opportunist, a creative rebel and a rational optimist who believes that climate change, rather than a problem, is the best thing to have happened for Africa!”
