Wednesday Night Debates Being in college is about being opinionated (that or aggresively apathetic). The L&H is there to provide students with a forum in which to rant about today’s most controversial issues. Our debate convenors make sure we have the very best guest to debate along side UCD students. This is your chance to be heard so don’t miss it!

The Porn Debate

The L&H’s year of debating always begins with a bang and our annual porn debate never fails to impress. Meet pornstars, members of the porn industry and religious opponents as they take each on!

The Lisbon Treaty Debate

As the stakes get higher and Ireland’s future in Europe balances on the edge of a precipice, how much do we really know about the issues involved? Representatives from Labour, the socialist movement and MEPs will be there and with only a week before the vote, things should heat up quickly.

The Scientology Debate

Tom Cruise, John Travolta and that woman who voices Bart Simpson: what’s the attraction? Also, why are they Scientologists?

The Abortion Debate

A debate that is consistently fiery, impassioned and riveting. Our speakers will come from religious, political and activist backgrounds to take on this deep and divisive topic.

The Private Schools Debate

Are private schools worth the money? Or are people just paying to turn their kids into rugby loving, stuck up snobs? See educational experts and UCD students go head-to-head on whether or not we really are better off paying for our education.

The Irish Govenment Debate

As the economy continues to crumble we ask if we have any faith left in the government or do we think the opposition would do a better job. See some of Ireland’s leading politicians try to defend their side and decide who you think should be in power.

The God Debate

Is there a God and what should we really believe? Come along and watch people of every religious inclination debate over whether or not it’s rational to believe in God, or are should we give up on the idea altogether. As one of the World’s oldest and most controversial debates, it’s sure to be one to watch.

The Animal Rights Debate

Should we give animals any rights? Is it our duty to protect those who can’t fend for themselves or just protect ourselves? See some of the World’s leading animal rights activists and anti-animal rights campaigners right here at The L&H.

The Capitalism v. Socialism Debate

This debate is normally seen as a walkover for the Capitalists, as Socialism drowns in a pool of its own past failures. But Capitalism hasn’t exactly been a roaring success lately, so a comeback may be on the cards!

The Ball Kicking Comedy Debate

The L&H has a proud tradition of nurturing side-splittingly good comedians, with Dara O Briain, Des Bishop and Jarlath Regan among them. We consistently have the liveliest, funniest comedy debates, and this year will be no different.

The Death Penalty Debate

It may be ancient history in Europe, some countries, the US among them, still believe Capital Punishment is the only way to deal with the worst of criminals. Our debate will see if there’s any merit to what they say, or whether they’re just living in the past.

The United Ireland Debate

Is the fight for a United Ireland dead and gone, or should we still be up in arms? The L&H has contacts among the best and most prominent speakers on this topic, and this debate enlivens the passion among all involved.

The South Africa World Cup Debate

Should South Africa be spending hundreds of millions on a soccer competition when so much of its population lives in abject poverty? Representatives from South Africa and Irish charities will be there, along with UCD student speakers.
