SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION, HISTORY, AND INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES UCM’s COMMUNICATION program offers several hands-on experiences that will teach you how to effectively communicate through both personal and mediated content. DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTION teaches you how to write, edit, produce and publish communication of professional level substance and quality for today’s converged media. You’ll receive the opportunity to forge your own path by specializing your degree in one of four areas, including audio, digital cinema, digital journalism and live studio and remote production. No matter what you choose, you’ll receive hands-on experience that will prepare you for an exciting career in the field.

HISTORY offers our students unique opportunities for critical thinking and writing. Explore your options by choosing from a variety of concentrated studies, including African, American, British, French, Korean, Latin American, Middle Eastern, Spanish, military and women’s history.

Explore these unique areas of study, all available as both minors and individualized majors! AFRICANA STUDIES explores the essential part played by peoples of African descent in the construction of human civilization. Learn about the sweeping contributions African heritage has made to the disciplines of art, music, history, literature, political science and sociology. Discover a rich variety of experiences in this interdisciplinary, multicultural and community-oriented program. RELIGIOUS STUDIES facilitates learning about the diversity of religious perspectives at UCM and in America today. Explore the literature and history of world religions and deepen your understanding of the impact of religion on society today.

WOMEN, GENDER AND SEXUALITY STUDIES (WGS) provides students with an intensive focus on gender and sexuality from a critical, interdisciplinary perspective. Develop the knowledge and skills to address gender and sexuality issues in a professional setting and to provide effective leadership in public discourse. ENGLISH AND PHILOSOPHY

As an ENGLISH major, you can personalize your degree by choosing the literature track and exploring Anglophone and world literature or by choosing the creative writing track to develop your own voice as a poet or fiction writer. Get involved in publishing the UCM student literary and arts magazine, Arcade, collaborating with faculty on Pleiades, our internationally recognized literary journal, and learning from professionals through the Visiting Writers Series. Complete a minor in technical writing to acquire skills that are valuable in almost any career path you take.

The ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE (ELI) offers an academic Intensive English Program, professional language training and shortterm cultural programming for international students. The ELI serves UCM’s English language learners and helps them develop the skills they need to be successful at the university, in their careers or in specialized language programs. The ELI is housed together with the Center for Global Education in Elliott Student Union 302.


SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND LANGUAGES The SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION 9-12 degree prepares students in education and social science courses to successfully pass the required exam and apply for certification through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Develop skills in social studies methods to instruct with technology, differentiated instruction, inquiry, critical thinking and culturally responsive teaching. You’ll put these skills to the test while teaching in diverse classrooms and experiencing a full semester of student teaching — all before graduation!

MODERN LANGUAGE programs, including Chinese, French, German, Spanish and Arabic, provide students with a world-class educational experience and study abroad programs. Explore the path to fluency as you develop critical thinking skills, multicultural awareness and unique opportunities for combining language study with career training in optional professional application areas.

The WORLD LANGUAGES AND CULTURES minor will help you acquire valuable language and cross-cultural competency skills that employers demand. This minor complements majors like international studies, criminal justice, business, communication studies and English. SOCIOLOGY majors use science to study the relationship between the individual and society. As a sociology major, you’ll focus on different social institutions like families, religion, the economy or education. Explore work in local communities, government or non-profit agencies that deal with social issues such as homelessness, addiction, neighborhood planning, health care and social policy.

The SOCIAL GERONTOLOGY minor is concerned with the social aspects of aging and is open to all UCM students. In a world where more people are living longer than ever before, it’s more important than ever to meet the needs of aging societies. We’ll prepare you to work in a range of elder care settings and pursue graduate study in social gerontology. ANTHROPOLOGY’S goal is to explore and describe the nature of humans as evolving cultural and biological beings. Get hands-on experience and focus on fieldwork, whether that means recovering archaeological specimens, conducting ethnographic interviews, serving as a museum intern or working in labs. This program will empower you to contribute to the rich diversity of our rapidly changing world.

The INTERNATIONAL STUDIES program offers you diverse career opportunities in an increasingly globalized world. It includes a study abroad experience and life-changing opportunities that are sure to make you stand out in the field. Gain strong analytic skills, proficiency in a second language and the ability to evaluate and understand the development and impact of globalization on individuals and societies.

POLITICAL SCIENCE faculty are experts in constitutional law, the U.S. Supreme Court, global issues such as AIDS in underdeveloped countries, the European Union and politics in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Students have access to internships in Jefferson City, Mo. and Washington, D.C., as well as opportunities to participate in student organizations such as Model U.N., Mock Trial, Students for Political Action and political party interest groups.

The GLOBAL SECURITY STUDIES minor will give you the knowledge and skills to understand the complexity of 21st century security threats. This program leverages the tools of the social sciences and humanities to think critically about both the nature of security threats and how to defend against those threats. Learn about the root causes of security challenges like human trafficking, terrorism and insurgencies, failed states, forced migration, ethnic and religious violence and the spread of weapons of mass destruction. As a MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES minor, you’ll receive an in-depth understanding of the most complex region in the world. Explore the complex political, social, religious and historical dynamics in the Middle East. Gain opportunities to fulfill the program requirements by studying abroad, which provides a unique, firsthand perspective on the region that few people will ever experience.

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

The ART AND DESIGN programs at UCM have been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) since 1986, and the interior design program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). Outstanding faculty with real-world experience serve programs in graphic design, interior design, studio art and art education for aspiring K-12 teachers. Service-learning opportunities contribute to hands-on, high-impact education.

UCM was the first All-Steinway School in Missouri, and our MUSIC program has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1947. You’ll love our state-of-the-art facilities, extraordinary faculty and opportunities to engage with music, from performing in ensembles to attending one of the more than 100 free concerts we produce each year. Whether you choose to pursue the nationally prominent music technology program, music education, or degree options in music, performance, jazz-commercial music, or piano, you’ll receive a solid, traditional foundation while also staying connected with new technologies and trends.

THE MCCLURE ARCHIVES AND UNIVERSITY MUSEUM, founded 1881, is UCM’s official repository for archival, ethnographic and historical materials. Its collections span the globe from pre-Columbian Mexico to the modern Middle East, as well as the comprehensive history of UCM. It is open year round on the first floor of the James C. Kirkpatrick Library, is free to the public and offers a series of exhibitions, services, guest lectures and community events each year.


UCM THEATRE AND DANCE earned its accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) in 2013. With four major degree programs and two minors, we offer students engagement in academic and artistic rigor in both the classroom and production season. Each year, UCM Theatre and Dance produces four to five main stage plays and musicals, a spring dance concert, 12-15 studio theatre one-acts and a Black Box experimental season of 30-40 separate productions that focus on student original works.
